im only on this site a month but after two weeks i just gave up getting in giveaways knowing theres less than a 0.001 chance ill win. i avoided giveaways till i got to level 3, where my chances are still low, but a lot higher.
what do you think? have you ever won a level 0 giveaway?

Well, somebody is gonna win these giveaways, even though they're level 0, right? So, what if it's you?

Just won a level 0 GA six days ago and two level 0 GAs 1 month ago. It's absolutely possible (well, duh), you have to be lucky is all.

My luckiest win was probably D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die -Season One- with 4712 entries - it was a giveaway with 3 copies though. xD But I had some other wins with more than a thousand entries. Still, I haven't won a giveaway with as many entries as yours. :P

Some times - yes. If it is your wislisted game and you want it very hard and you have extra points to spend - why not.)
There is still chancess to win it.) I have won some 0lvl giveaways - Party Hard with 2129 Entires, Infinractory - 1231.

But if you have a little amount of points and there is plenty giveaways with highier level - offcourse it better to enter in higher level.)
I am entering in max level I have giveaways first, then others. More copies in one giveaway = more chances to win.
But pay attention with group giveaways - some times they have times more entires then even open 0lvl giveaways.)

I don't know if I won a level 0, but I think the best way to win is:

  • decide what you want to win the most
  • enter every giveaway for it
  • find the second most wanted game
  • enter every giveaway for it
  • repeat until out of points.

level 0 is a small chance to win, so entering for something you don't really want is indeed a waste because likely you will win, and if you do, you don't want the game. But for a wanted game - 10 different giveaway with 1000 entries is like one giveaway with 100 entrants. Still not a huge chance to win, but the point is that many low chance giveaway's chances are additive (and you have better chance of winning than if you don't enter at all :) )

  • decide what you want to win the most
  • find out there's no giveaways for it
  • find the second most wanted game
  • discover there's also no open giveaways for it
  • get down at like spot 20 of your wishlist
  • enter the one open GA for it
  • proceed to No.143 on your wishlist
  • finally! I can use my points!

is there even a point getting in a level 0 AAA giveaway?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Chances are low but it happens occasionally.
Also highly dependent on what you enter for, if it's the AAA ones that last 3-4 weeks and get over 4k entries then it's much more unlikely than the 3 hour bundle game.
Plus when that happens it's like winning again for the first time since you never expected it to happen :P

30% of my wins are level 0 public. 35% if I add in the level 1 win. Level 0 and level 1 entry numbers are usually pretty close.

There are different ways of looking at the giveaway process. Some of them are discouraging, and others are fun. Wouldn't you rather enjoy your time on SG? I know I would. Here is what I do to make SG enjoyable for me.

  1. I don't worry about winning. Failing to win a giveaway takes nothing away from me, and my life goes on as before. If I am expecting to win, however, I will probably suffer disappointment, and who wants to deal with that? Not I. So, I toss those pesky expectations in the bin and look for my satisfaction elsewhere. If I ever do happen to win, it is a pleasant surprise and a bonus to my day. (Don't enter for games you don't want to play, though, as winning one of those is a drag.)
  2. I enjoy the entry process. Entering giveaways is sort of like a hobby. Seeing new games come up is like window-shopping. It's all fun. There is also some satisfaction in knowing that, sooner or later, I will end up getting a free game for doing nothing more than expressing a desire for it.
  3. I enjoy the community. There are lots of interesting things to see and read and learn about in the discussion sections and forum. I also enjoy "people watching" as human behavior is often unpredictable. And if I keep an open mind, and pay close attention, there's a good chance I may learn something beneficial from the experience of others.
  4. I enjoy helping people. Interacting with the community provides me with the opportunity to share the bits of knowledge and experience I have gathered over a lifetime. Occasionally, another person may even find them useful. D
  5. I enjoy giving. That is really why I joined SG in the first place. I enjoy giving to others, and I get a chance to do exactly that on this website. I find it exciting and satisfying whenever I am able to brighten someone else's day with a gift they are excited and happy to receive.

P.S. (There is always a chance to win, even when there are 8300+ other people entered in the same giveaway.)

+1 to the "enjoy the entry process" one. While I follow most large developers myself, SG is actually my main source of find cool indie games. I then wishlist those games, enter giveaways for them and eventually sometimes just buy them myself. It's great.
And entering giveaways for all wishlisted games takes like 2 mins and practically no effort, I do it out of habbit nowadays.

+1 as well :D Entering gibs for games I want is certainly a hobby/habit for me (rather than actually hoping I'll win them all). It's risk-free, remorse-free (opposite to buying), often with additional fun hidden in the descriptions and indie gems I sometimes find while browsing "All" page.
The community here is awesome and giving is made easy and nonproblematic.

So yeah, I came here (probably as most of us) to just win free games and ended up in a very nice place that sometimes takes my free time away ;)

In the forum? Sure there is! All of my GAs in this train are Level 0, though a few of them also require you to have the game given on your wishlist or have no wins. Odds are quite good I think :-)

Public GA are also worth entering, just keep you expectation low and be persistent.

Also puzzle protected giveaways, if you're willing to put in the extra effort, often have a pretty high chance of winning.

Well, a slight chance of winning is still better than no chance of winning. I'm not one to pass an opportunity to win a wishlisted game, regardless of the GA level :D

Someone is going to win a level 0 regardless of their own level, so yes it may be worth if it is the game you are after :)

I've actually won 12 level 0 public giveaways. Some of those were crap, but most were actually fun games that I really enjoyed.
So, in short - Yup. You will eventually win one.

Also, avoiding all giveaways until you reach a certain level is not a good idea. Just keep entering them. Don't think too much about winning. I don't expect to win anything I enter really. Just do it and let the RNG do it's thing

21 of my 55 wins (38%) are from public level 0 giveaways. And that list includes several wishlisted gamed like Nuclear Throne, Bioshock 2, Baldur's Gate, Grim Fandango, Stasis...

Maybe I have been luckier than most but I would say it is worth it.
