So, stupid as it sounds, try Windows 7/8.1 compatibility. For some reason Windows compatibility is weird, and often if it doesn't work when you select the exact OS all you need to do is try the previous/next OS and see if it works.

That is the thing with upgrading OS you shouldn't do it if running things from older ones matters to you.
That said if you have a decent computer you can use a virtual machine to run XP and play.
