I know it's an American made cartoon, but it's also very well inspired by Japanese cartoons, or Anime if you will.
True, it's technically not an anime, but it's no less than an anime.
Edit: Also it's said that the universe of Avatar and art style is inspired by the Spirited Away, the work of Hayao Miyazaki.

Yuyu hakusho was an alright Anime, but Hunter x Hunter is pure brilliance in comparison. I never bothered with the manga so my experience differs on that regard.

then you didnt read/watch the last dozen episodes of hunter x hunter, i was a huge fan of it. but he messed up on his story so bad that he quit the manga all together, he ruined how gon and his dad meet. and he hated where the story went after that.
on another note, he did ruin the ending to both his manga's/anime's yuyu hakusho and hunter x hunter ended bad

Code Geass (Lelouch of the Rebellion R1 and R2) if you want to watch an anime about wits, strategy, tactics and people fighting for justice.
Death Note is about a self proclaimed "god" killing murderers and criminals, and it's also a battle of wits.
Sword Art Online is an anime that where the main character and 6000 other people get trapped in a game and they have to beat the 100 levels in order to log out and live their life outside, once you die, you die in game and in real life.
Attack on Titan is an anime where they fight titans in order to survive, they built walls in order to keep them safe, but a wall gets destroyed and then destruction ensues.
