I'm curious about something: If you are gifted the wrong game, what should you do? You don't know you've been gifted the wrong game until you hit the activate button and then, of course, there's no way to undo said action. So aside from informing the sender that you were gifted the wrong game, what should you do; and should you confirm that the gift was received or what (especially considering that the game which I had entered to win was worth 50 points while the game I was gifted was worth 6...)?

Uh, when you get an email the subject line should say what game it is, so I don't really know how you wouldn't know until after activation. Unless they sent you a personal email I guess.

It did. The problem, as stated above, is that when I entered the key into STEAM, I got the wrong game.

Think we need more details. Was it an official Steam email or personal? What games are we talking about?

Personal email from their email account. Subject Header: DIRT 3 - STEAM GIFTS.

Body included a personal note from the gifter and the key.

Upon using the key, I was given Humble Indie Bundle 3 - which is obviously not DiRT 3.

Forgive me as I have never used the Steam gift process before (either via steam or here and this is my first time winning a give-a-way).

Ok, then yeah, I'd email/contact the guy first, see if it was an honest mistake, and if he ignores you report it to sgiftsreports@gmail.com

Ok. I've contacted them and informed them of the mistake. Hopefully, they will get back to me. Thank you for your help.

I'm sorry... what?

Well.. If the item you got costs more, then the one you win, I would take it. =D
Else I would tell gifter to gift me the real game/any other game that is cheaper from the one you won for the money that the one you got costs. =)

Thats just what I would do...

If the gifter gave away a a cheaper-value game than what he put up a giveaway for, then he/she scammed the site. You'd be obligated to notify CG (or Cult, now, yes?) if that was the case.

I from what I'm reading it looks like a point scam to me: add a game that gives a bunch of points, then when it finishes send out a cheaper key for something else and hope that throws them of your trail and/or causes the person to click gift received before activating their key.

Even if they click gift received, they can untick it or change it at any time. I have accidentally done that and reverted it back to the received status.

I think I know this guy... If it IS the person I'm thinking of, it was an honest mistake; he had two giveaways running and he sent the wrong games. (Winner of Dirt 3 was given Humble Indie Bundle and the HIB guy was given Dirt 3...)

Yes, you would indeed be correct. I just got an email back from him that says he mixed up the keys and sent the wrong keys to each person. He attempted to send me the other key but it had already been activated. Now I'm faced with a moral dilemma: Should I acknowledge the gift as received, or should I wait out the week and tick it as not being received even though it was an honest mistake by the gifter?

I'd wait the week and mark it as not received. It's still his fault, after all.

I think he should find a way of rectifying the situation because it really is the sender's fault (I am not taking a stance against the sender, we are all human and make mistakes after all, but merely saying the winner of the giveaway should not be made to bear the burden of such error). Since most of these dirt 3 codes are those that are exploited from the AMD vision challenge, the sender may have a few other copies lying around. One of the main reasons why I couldn't get one from the AMD vision challenge for my own country was because many people just abused the system like that and took more than one (some boasted of getting hundreds and I remember seeing a thread here on someone whose friend sold the copies for 50 pounds each...)

Acknowledge the gudt as received. It has been established that it was an honest mistake. He sent out both games, leaving negative feedback just seems petty.

You did received a prize even if it wasn't what u entered for. If 50 virtual points are not equal to 6 virtual points doesn't matter IMO. You got a free prize, so give him his feedback. We are all humans, shit happens.

+1 Also the HiB#3 is an awesome pack of games, trust me. I remark this: "We are all humans, shit happens."

@papamidnight

i unchecked the "sent gift" option, not sure if that does anything but i failed to deliver the game you won, and i wont be able to provide you with another copy, sorry man.

I would personally contact Steam support about the issue and see if they can rectify the situation.

I would uncheck it too but send an email to steamgifts letting them know of the problem clearly, even to go as far as asking that NO disciplinary action is taken. But leave it unchecked. A mistake was made its ultimately up to you to forgive and let go though.

Thinking about the prob twice though, Im happy the guy was gifting dirt 3 in the first place, better to promote happiness and leave it checked. I want to gift when i can and i love this website. We should support the gifters.

I think you should Mark as received. It was an Honest Mistake, I don't really think the Guy should be punished for it. He even apologized for it and is manning up for his mistake.

But, that is My Opinion, in the end you shall do whatever you think is right.

When you get a gift sent to you you get a email. "You've received a gift copy of the game Jamestown on Steam" thats what one email said. There is no excuse.

You didn't read all the posts, did you?

He already said that the Email was JUST a Code that you can Activate on Steam. So, the ONLY way to see what game it is, is to activate it on steam, which he did, and found out it was the wrong game.

I thought retail cd keys were banned to stop other people recovering your account.

After reading and weighing all opinions on the matter, I have decided to acknowledge the gift as received. I plan to gift here in the future myself (when I have the cash to spend) and support those who choose to give out games as they see fit. The fact is that it was an honest mistake. invid01 did make an attempt to send me the DiRT 3 code (which would've resulted in me having two free games for the price of one) so I can more than credit him for that - even though it was already activated by another party (though he didn't know that at the time). As was stated, shit happens. I just hope we all can take a lesson from this and make sure we send the correct gifts to the correct persons in the future :P. Best of luck to all.
