Targeting more sales. Many gamers won't be as informed as the early birders, so there is a fresh audience upon release. At least that's the plan. :)

Yours is a valid concern. But the consumer is not uniform in his/her buying patterns. While some are happy to jump on the early access wagon, others prefer to wait after gold status.
The potential doesn't need to be exhausted through Kickstarter or early access if the early birds are satisfied with what they get and spread the word.
Especially developers of a game like Starbound which is all about replayability and new features shouldn't be too worried by this model.

Wasn't the original purpose of kickstarter to fund projects, not to buy products or preorder games? Kickstarter is essentially an online store now, instead of what it was originally intended for.

Pretty sure they're just using the ability to preorder via kickstarter as an effective incentive to donate money to their cause, as a user is more likely to tip some into the hat if they get something in return (rather than needing to pay "twice" to get the game).

usually they do give some sort of thank you gift for backers but they are not obliged to. Kickstarter is about helping funding a project you like without any guarantee of receiving anything back

"kickstarters are made to fund the game because the developer doesn't have enough money to complete it"
I agree. This is exactly what I said.

"if he wastes all the money from preorderers on his project he won't have much money left."
I'm sorry, what? I'm not entirely sure what you're saying.

By the way, I am entirely correct. Kickstarter was never designed to be a store for preorders.
