I was reading that a plant-based diet is incredibly healthy. For those not in the know, a plant-based diet is basically veganism, but with science as the foundation as opposed to ideology. I'd love to switch over, but I think it would be too difficult.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually according to my professors, the most healthy diet is eating a little bit of everything.
For example Vit B12 exist only in "animals"- meat, fish and eggs; as such if you are a "pure" vegan you will deplete the reserves of this vitamin which will have consequences on your CNS.
On the other hand, having a diet you don't like might make you so miserable more prone to psychiatric disease; tso might not gain anything from the healthy diet you are making.

Be aware, vitamin b12 deficiency is not a problem for any sole group or followers of any particular diet.
Being a Pure vegan does not equate to not being able to take in b12 supplements since no harm comes from it..
On a side note, do those professors also explain to you where most of the b12 in the animals come from? you guessed it, supplements!

Yeah...when you get a med school degree after 6 years of college, then you can argue with me. it's a well known fact that vitamin B12 can ONLY be found in animal products. The fact that you had a huge reserve that lasted until now, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Also doesn't mean that being vegan is any less stupid.

Many vitamins and supplements are derived, extracted from animal meat and byproducts,if a person is taking a multi vitamin not made specifically for a vegan (and even possibly then)chances are they are still eating meat products might as well enjoy them on the grill instead of in pill form:)

Comment has been collapsed.

Most B12 supplements contain cyanocobalamin, rather than cobalamin. The former is something that can be produced synthetically, the later is what you get when you eat meat. There are other forms of synthetically produced B12 that can be used instead, but to my knowledge, the main reason to use those is if you're really afraid of the cyano-bit in cyanocobalamin (and then you should probably avoid nuts as well ;) )

Permalink

when you get a med school degree after 6 years of college, then you can argue with me.

I kinda want to call bullshit on this. I suspect that you don't have any higher degree related to medicine.
Cyanocobalamin works well as a substitute to cobalamin, and the former is something that is very easy for vegans to get hold of through different fortified products.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Suspect all you want. I couldn't care less. I just told you how it is.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You "told us how it is", and then you showed a complete lack of understanding on the topic. Cyanocobalamin is not something that you get from animal products, and it's a type of B12. In fact, it's the most common type of B12 you see in most B12-fortified food and supplements, making it easy for vegans to get enough B12, if they know what to look for.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ok, smart-ass, if you're so caught-up on the subject, how about you tell me where is the cobalamine absorbed in the human body, what substance is needed for the process and why do people that have suffered stomach resections due to gastric cancer aren't able to properly absorb it and require parenteral doses? Cyanocobalamine is an lame excuse that doctors that support this crazy, stupid diet have come up with. Similar to those bogus studies that "prove" that vaccines cause autism =)) And before you come up with more bullshit.. keep in mind that I never said it doesn't exist, just that there's NO WAY it can replace normal doses of cobalamine that you get from a PROPER and BALANCED diet. proper. Just like you can't get enough folic acid from animal products. And no, veganism is neither proper, nor balanced, cause those two terms mean a LITTLE BIT of EVERYTHING. Variety is the name of the game...

If people could grow up only on a vegan diet, then baby milk formulas like Althera, would not be necessary for infants with allergy to cow milk proteins.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

how about you tell me where is the cobalamine absorbed in the human body,
Initial absorption is in the gut, more specifically in the final part of the small intestine.

what substance is needed for the process

GIF is needed, which is a form of protein.

Cyanocobalamine is an lame excuse that doctors that support this crazy, stupid diet have come up with. Similar to those bogus studies that "prove" that vaccines cause autism

I have an easy time finding studies that point at the positive effects of cyanocobalamine for people with a dietary B12 deficiency, and the use of it as a replacement. If this is bogus, then there are a lot of scientists in on the "joke", getting getting their work into databases that does proper peer reviews, like science direct (using that as an example, as that's one of the databases that I have access to). This is very much unlike the "proof" that vaccines causes cancer, which was based on the work of a single person, who falsified his studies and who has since lost his position due to this.

Both cobalamine and cyanocobalamine gets converted into methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin after being absorbed by the body. This is then what the body uses. As both cobalamine and cyanocobalamine becomes the same thing (the cyano-bit gets removed and goes out with the rest of your waste), one would assume that they will have the same effect on the body. After all, chemically identical substances behave the same way, the source does not matter.

in my opinion you both shouldn't be fighting over a choice of living that not many people make (i guess o.O), i mean even if is not healthy there are people that choose to not eat what they dont like (or just dont wanna eat for personal reasons) which can be compared with being a smoker or an alcoholic, it's not healthy but who cares? it makes you feel warm inside (except of course the part about smoking and drinking being adicting and ending up by not being a choice of living after all... except again if some drugs are included in vegetarian meals which i highly doubt...)

Anti-vaxers don't have thousands of pages of studies in any reputable, peer reviewed, database. They had one "study" on it. It has been removed, because it came to light that the numbers were falsified.

Oooh, someone googled some things

There's a difference between googling something, and searching for something in a reputable scientific database. If you had actually gone through med-school, or had any other scientific education, you would know this.

Also, there's this part:

As both cobalamine and cyanocobalamine becomes the same thing (the cyano-bit gets removed and goes out with the rest of your waste), one would assume that they will have the same effect on the body. After all, chemically identical substances behave the same way, the source does not matter.

you aren't vegan for time enough to deplete your B12 reserves. According to my professors it takes around 4-6 years to deplete reserves.
And if don't "control" your diet in many developed countries vegan food is enriched with B12 so it might take even more to deplete the reserves.
Just keep going to the doctor and control your vit B12 levels. Do be carefull with this since Vit B12 is needed to keep the CNS working.
When i took my nutrition classes i saw too many people broken because of this, especially women at around 30-40. It was really sad for me seeing people self-destruct like that.

Hey man, I think you have gotten it all wrong. B12 it's originated in soil, herbivores when they graze they get B12 and you get it from them if you eat meat. Since these babies are factory farmed and they don't graze anymore you're not getting much of it either, you can see the reports of the USDA, for example. I do have my degrees and studies finished and my vegan colleagues as well.

Taking B12 supplements or enriched B12 foods is important? I won't say it's not. Do you need to eat meat and B12 is produced in these animals bodies? NOPE.

I don't think he realizes that the majority of manmade B12 is currently fed to livestock, and that B12 in general is becoming a problem for omnis, as well; which is why dairy, cereals and other common foods are so often fortified nowadays. Not to mention the various studies that have been coming out in recent years about teas, algae and fermented food possibly being a viable veg B12 source in the future. Which only marginally matters anyway because - supplements.
