За все эти дни поспал, возможно, 9 часов. Очень устал. Устал со слезами на глазах слушать, как мои люди прощаются, потому что боятся.

If anyone is interested: remember how Bloomberg did an oopsie and posted about invasion beforehand? RIA News, one of the major pro-kremlin media, just did the same thing and accidently posted (and quickly removed, but the Internet remembers everything) a headline which was supposedly meant to celebrate the accomplishment of Putin's plan. The amount of propaganda is so off the charts that even Goebbels would've been surprised.

I did not want to post here anymore than once, but I feel the need to get something off my chest.
Today Putin has set his nuclear forces on high alert. For those special troops, that is the equivalent to Defcon 2. All the while his PR persons are still spewing things like: "Don't forget that Russia is a nuclear power." and "Russia today is the mightiest of the nuclear powers."
It is happening. The unthinkable no sane human being thought possible for 77 years might be imminent: Putin might drop a nuke. He might drop it on Kiew, he might even drop it on another state other than Ukraine. Hell, who knows what this deranged man is capable of. Noone does.
If he drops a nuke on Ukraine, there is the minimal possibility that the West will not answer with a nuke on Russia. But if he drops a nuke on a NATO state, well, Russia will be nuked to hell. But before Russia will cease to exist, Putin will fire all his other nukes and will wipe out most of the NATO states. There will be countless casualties due to the nukes, but way worse is the Nuclear Winter that will follow if thousands upon thousands of nukes will set off on this planet. Most of humanity will starve to death or die by radioactive poisoning. There will be no sunlight on our soil for at least 12 months.
Now, this sounds like a pretty cliché script for a 1980s cold war movie, but the sad truth is: It might be a very real possibility. And it might happen in a few days or weeks. The planet never was so close to nuclear war than it is now. All because of one single mentally ill man.
I wholeheartedly urge every sane russian who reads this to help organize enourmous mass protests in your country. I know protesting is forbidden. I know that already 5250 russian anti-war protesters were arrested.
But the sad truth is: The future of the world is in your hands now. The West will not send the first nuke (to the Kremlin), the West will not send a small unit with a kill command to Moscow. The West will do everything in his power to not start the third world war.
I fear that the responsibility to oust Putin from office is in the hands of the russian people, who neither wanted nor started this utterly insane war. Because they are the only ones capable of doing so, without starting WW3. And I am truly sorry for that. I wish there was another way.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. Those are all good and interesting points, but I'd also say that I believe the professor didn't claim that the US influenced or convinced western Ukrainians or Poland etc to lean towards the EU and away from Russia. His maps and charts at the outset make it clear that he is aware of the grassroots feelings of Ukrainians both west and east regardless of western input. What he is saying is that by holding out assurances of future NATO membership and yet never following through on that (and they never will), the US put Ukraine in a dangerous position. Because Ukraine believed it and espoused it willingness to join, further provoking Putin to act, as he had threatened to since 2008 when he made it clear that Georgia and Ukraine in NATO was a redline for him.
Even in the west we know who Yanukovych is and about his corruption. (I did follow your advice and did some more reading on the Ukrainian political scene - there are so many actors - it's mind boggling.) No doubt the Ukrainian people would have gotten rid of him regardless, as I think you are maintaining. But, the participation of the US in that coup, needless or not, signaled Putin and further incensed and provided him another justification to act in Crimea.
I'm not sure how the shift of post USSR countries to the west is relevant to the present conversation. Many of these countries were European before Stalin marched in and grabbed them. It's natural that they would want to return to European alliances once the USSR collapsed. No persuasion was necessary in these cases or is being put forth. It's worth pointing out that Russia was also in collapse and much to weak to do anything about it at the time. Nor did these countries touch it borders, with the exception of the Baltics, which are not considered as important or as strategic to Russia's security as Georgia and Ukraine.
I don't think that Mearsheimer thinks highly of Putin. (Though I'm not sure what you meant by that.) It's his job to think as dispassionately and realistically as possible about his motivations, strengths and weaknesses in order to find ways to effectively counter him. The fact that he is a dictator and a thug is not relevant - finding ways of stopping him from doing harm is. While my country resorts to saber rattling and moral posturing, meanwhile, Putin has planned his moves very carefully - especially vis-a-vis his partnering with China and Europe's dependence on his energy.
I fear that Ukraine may be split in two before this over. I hope not. Unfortunately, it's now too late for Ukraine to solve this on their own as I think you would've liked. I hope that my country will see the light and do something constructive for a change, like helping to promote a cease fire and bring Ukraine and Russia back to the negotiating table.
