Yesterday I got two pretty rude messages from some dude I have never talked to before. They apparently didn't like my workshop item and instead of just giving me a dislike and moving on they decided to call me a dumbass and also put a comment on my profile telling me to kill myself.

I reported it to Steam and I'm not really sure how moderation works there, or if action is usually taken against users who say shit like this. I know if I ran a platform like Steam I sure wouldn't want people acting this way towards other users, but I don't know. I just felt it was worth talking about. I'm generally very uncomfortable participating in the gaming community online (playing online games for example) because I don't care for the toxicity, and even when I'm just doing my thing I'm getting hate lol. For the most part people have been nice to me (and I'm trying to be nice to others!) but it's just so disappointing to get these messages even if they don't really get to me that much.

What are your thoughts on people acting like this?

--

EDIT: Guy's comments are gone now. I didn't delete them and never got an update to my report, so no clue what actually happened. Thanks for the support and discussion though! It's nice to hear what others think about this.

First of all, you can delete stuff people write on your profile or workshop page.
You can also block & report that person.
But most importantly is just to pay no attention to them.
They are clearly not smart. Or important. So their opinion holds no value whatsoever.

Deleting is probably the plan for later, but I'd like to get Steam mods' attention before I do that. :S I don't really care what this guy thinks but it's still disappointing to get these crap messages and wanted to talk about it (and open up for others to talk about their experiences).

thing is, I highly doubt steam will do anything. i think is better to just block/ignore than actually wait for support to be useful. when I report someone trying to scam the they said they don't really take action based on user reports so I guess being rude is way less important than scamming

I think there is a bit of a luck element in anything getting done. We did report some people writing nasty stuff on a friends profile after he passed away and a few of the people ended up getting a community ban in less than 24 hours of it happening. But I would imagine its a pretty rare thing that something actually happens. Delete + block is definitely the way to go in this case imo.

Sometimes, it seems that people from certain countries may make strange comments due to their biased knowledge and instigation.
But most of them are probably spam.

Are you the one who replies?
Someone who doesn't reply?

It's probably just spam to collect them.

You can make people who reply to you follow a malicious URL.
For those who reply, you can attach a message that makes them want to complain.

On a certain day, at a certain time, and in a certain place, the person who replies can be used as a "distraction.
Maybe you will be absorbed by an evil spammer.👾

If the content is offensive to a third party, delete it and block it.
If the content is unimportant to a third party, leave it alone.
In any case, if it is something that violates Steam's terms and conditions, report it to Steam.

i also happened to experience the same thing in one of my reviews. i believe that those kinds of person are either trolls or a kid that has nothing better to do, so i just simply block after telling him my thoughts and move on.

i doubt steam will respond these kinds of things since it doesn't affect them in any way though.
i'm sorry for what happened.

I’m sorry this happened to you. That person wasted his time being mean to someone over nothing, so he’s the one with a loss in this situation. It’s safest to ignore and block. Of course it’s normal to feel bad after a negative interaction, but the opinion of someone you don’t respect isn’t worth much. I hope you have a good interaction to restore your faith in people. And it’s something to be proud of that you were creative and productive and made something for the workshop!

Yeah they sure are. It's not so much about achievement hunting Gmod (because why would you...) but rather doing a fun thing. I'm still doing this thread and I'm actually only 4 likes away from being at 200 but I don't want to bump the thing too often.

ah I did think the 100 likes was weird but I guess it only bothers to update every hundred. Oh you got so many hours as well but yh I guess you only did like 10 days. The achieveents get crazier and crazier needing almost 9k hours. I keep joking about 100% orange juice and how youre a newbie unless you got 1k hours but like that seems so much truer with garrys mod.

I think the numbers showing on the item is the total amount of ratings. Looking at the statistics that only I can see I have 196 likes and 19 dislikes for a total of 215. Only likes count for the achievement though.

Yeeeeeeeeah I kind of gave up on the rest of the time achievements. After doing a little over a week I was just so over having it running in the background and having my desktop turned on for no reason. No way I'm doing a year. No way I'm getting into a server where Garry is either. But this achievement looked like it could make a fun event.

I feel sorry for people that have to vent their anger (or whatever else) on random folk online. You did the right thing reporting them. I've been on the internet for so long that I really couldn't care any less for what people write on it even if it is directed my way. I was a moderator on a forum once and it helped a lot with understanding that no matter what you do, there is always someone that gets offended by it. Just stay away from the big puddles and you should be fine if you just remove your feet from the small ones without standing in them for too long ;)

Edit: Just looked at the guys profile for a minute... I definitely feel sorry for him now :D

I don't think the mods will lift a finger so you can just delete the comment if it makes you uncomfortable. Steam is full of edgy toxic kids and the best course of action is to ignore them completely. Don't even block, unless they continue to spam you, don't show that their comment affected you in any way. I looked at your profile and the workshop item in question, and I'm having a difficult time imagining why it would provoke such a reaction in someone. It's obviously a very disturbed individual, or a bored kid trying to start a fight for no reason. I would simply ignore them.

People should lighten up and enjoy the beautiful planet we have. Our individual lives are kinda meaningless in perspective. As hard as it may be, I hope you have a better week and try to ignore the toxicity as it shows their lack of intelligence and empathy.

When I saw the title, I was ready to be condescending and say things like "easy, do not judge people too hastily" or "we all can be dicks sometimes"... but in your case, yeah, it just seems we are talking about a nasty troll. Sorry it happened to you, and it seems you are doing exactly what I would do (great minds? :D :D).

I feel a little sad for this person -- imagine how it is, if the best thing you can do in your life is go around pestering other people with negative reactions... I mean, we have to deal with them trolls sometimes, which is unfair, but they have to deal with themselves all the time.

Anyway, hopefully you will forget this interaction as soon as possible! Have a random pineapple duck to help with that!

Cheers!

A little quote "I'm generally very uncomfortable participating in the gaming community online (playing online games for example) because I don't care for the toxicity, and even when I'm just doing my thing I'm getting hate lol". I am the same. That's why once I find a friend to play with, I mostly try to play every online game with him/them (and when I get an online game I try to convince at least one of them to play with me, so I don't take the risk of meeting random toxic people online).
The thing about getting hate when you are just doing your thing... it is not you, it's them :). That is how the community is. Even when you can find a bunch of nice people, I would say the majority is like that: cheaters. If you are literally a noob or just bad, you get insults; if you are good, you are called a cheater or a tryhard (or called that you are bad because the other players are too salty to acknowledge the fact that you are better than them); if you are average, people will find a way to be annoying. Haters, cheaters, trolls, flammers (i don't know if you use that word in english), and so on.

Summary: If you have some friends to play with, stick with them and... I really don't know why would you allow messages from strangers in your profile but I am pretty sure I have had that disabled since I am a Steam user. And even so I got a guy posting dicks on all my screenshots because I beated him on a game. In that I went for blocking that person and deleting the messages (reporting sounded like a useless pain... If you do it and you get possitive feedback, let me know).

Anyways, try not to think too much about it, and just enjoy the rest of the day.

Thanks for your thoughts. I just get my friends to play Payday or Jackbox with me when we get the time to play, and that's enough for me. I'm not really missing playing online.

Honestly the only people visiting my profile are from SG or trading, and those people are usually nice people. I do like getting comments when they are nice, which they usually are. No friggin idea how this guy found my WS item/profile since it should be pretty buried at the moment and he's not a SG user.

I have found people on L4D2 entering random lobbies only to kill teammates and then leave, people on Rocket league joining only to score own goals or directly play for the other team or people joining games only to talk shit on the chat and not play at all

So maybe he lives finding people to annoy, and he has done it with so many people so at the end he found you. You only had bad luck, so don't think too much about it.

And btw, coop games with friends is pretty fun :D.

Oh, another btw, how is your back doing? :3.

You try to do this, every single time that someone write you bad about your worshop (or others things you create) instead of losse time to reply to them or think about them you use your time for create a new workshop thing and publish it,maybe then you not care\think about them (because your body\brain is busy to work on workshop things) and also maybe you will be + happy.
This is a common problem in artist, artist are always attacked by people that is not able to create\bepositive,so the only thing they can do is go to others and write bad to what others create.
Instead of lose time to reply\block\read them and waste time to mad or feel sad,use their comments as an incentive to remember to yourself tht you want reach your "goals" (create new workshop,or whatever).

if someone come to you and tell you "you will never go in a beach todday",if you lose time mad\fight with him and reply to him maybe really you wll never see the beach today because then day finish,
but if instead of lose time with who disturb you by reply\mad to him\she, you ignore him go away and make the voyage and go to the beach (by ignore him\she) then you reach your goal (thanks to the fact that you transform the attack him do to you to think to reach a goal),and maybe also you meet some funny animals (dogs, cats, birds fly etc.) and have fun with them.

Sadly the only 1 thing i meet in sea was a shark and him was not much friendly with me lol so this for me not work, better to fight with people disturb me than shark bite my ass hahaha (kidding)

This said, sometimes also bad comments (that say don't like your work) can be helpful for artist if they include something educate\creative\positive that can help you to think how to make your work better... but only if they include something positive or creative..
because if they instead have only bad words etc. better to not care them because is words useful to nothing,0 value

Also must to see the words come from who,if is someone that help you when you stay hospital or sick,or help you in economy etc. so maybe listen to him will not be bad ideaa because is someone already in the past show to you that want help you...

But if is someone that never help you in hospital, never give you 1 money or food or cover, never write u creative positive things or help you with workshop,so who care what him\she write,is opinion 0 value because is people you don't know and is useful to nothing if write only bad stupid.

I regret now that I deleted the comment where someone called me the antichrist for not loving (the old) Hitman 2.
But also religious fanatics felt the need to tell me I go to hell and God is the way, when I mentioned in a review that it has uncomfortable level of "christian" propaganda. (Literally including religious terrorism because a voice in their head said so)

Sadly since there are douchebags in real life, it means their behaviour spills over to the internet too. And since they're hiding behind a fake name (username/profilename) they only get encouraged more to show their bad side.

Thankfully Steam (and many other sites and services) have a policy against such behaviour from their users. You did the right thing to report that person, since in fact Steam does act on them. And when they do, you get a notification on Steam. Source: Me, who occasionally reports rude comments on Steam forum even if said comment wasn't meant for me.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can just delete the comment. Steam admins can view deleted comments anyway

Unfortunately, too many people focus on bringing others down instead of all the positive things they could focus on instead. The best thing to do with these kinds of people is ignore and report them (I've reported his comment on your profile and workshop item too).

I don't think Valve are in a hurry to sort these things out though. I reported someone's profile around a month ago because it has a link to a porn site there and I received no confirmation of the report and the link remains. The same user was also being a top class a-hole here on SteamGifts and moderation did nothing about it, so maybe he's just untouchable.

Report account, block and move on. Paying attention to these people will not be good for you, you end up wasting your time and giving them attention. I'm talking from self experience, but i have evolved to a point where i deliberately troll these kind of people into becoming frustrated with me. It's a bit of a waste of time, but i do have my own fair share of fun pissing people off that try to start something.

I haven't had this kind of issue on steam, last issue i got with someone on steam that could more or less relate to this, was a "friend" of mine literally took my avatar on steam and put it on his profile, removed me from friends and proceeds to rename his account to "zeus is [insert insult here]". I noticed this because i had the chat window still open when this happened at the time, so i was like "wtf is going on?". I asked another friend of mine to speak to that other person and as to why he did this. His response was "zeus sucks, he rarelly replies back to me when i speak to him and most of the time it is too late. So i did this because i knew he would notice and get salty over it." After seeing that from a print my other friend gave me from their convo in real time, i literally not gave a F about whatever issues were going on with his life, i had nothing to do with it. I blocked the person and moved on. This was like, in 2012 or so. But imagine being this entitled, to the point of doing something as petty as this just to try and prove something... It's not like i was even ignoring this person, there was timezone issues and back then i was the kind of person to leave my pc running for days/weeks non stop, slow connection at the time so i had to take advantage of my work hours to download things.

Human beings are trash, as you can see. Not everyone follows into the same category obviously, but even when you consider someone okay, they can instantly turn on you for the most idiotic reason.

Youtube on the other hand, i have to deal with this kind of people almost on a daily basis. Seems like when you state your opinion about something, people get offended when you voice your opinion, even if it isn't related to them in anyway. And it's not even serious topics, imagine that. A good example is comparing performance in games between 2 console platforms, or giving a what if scenario to some plot in an anime/show, pointing out the pros and cons of the what if and if it fits into the plot.
