I'm new to Sony Vegas, but even I know it does not take 2 hours (and still counting) to render a 480p 40 second long video. I don't know where to start to improve whatever is wrong with it or where to find it online. Any help would be very welcome.

First, what's your CPU specs?
Second, what's the GPU you have?
Third, how much RAM do you have?

Only after these three questions can I even start.

I have a laptop with an Intel core i7 2630QM clocked at 2 GHz, 6GB of RAM and a 1GB Nvidea Geforce GT540M videocard.

I tried .wmv, .mp4 and .avi. None of the three worked.

those aren't codecs

Those are containers, the format the file is saved as.

Personally, I use an mp4 container with the H.264 codec. Keeps the file size down, even at high bitrates, with little to no quality loss.

Alright. Didn't know that. Didn't need to worry about that in WMM. I'll try that.

Boy, am I glad I use Camtasia 8.

I can render an hour-long video in 1080p at 9000kbps bitrate in a little under an hour and a half and have a file size of roughly 500 MB.

I tried using Sony Vegas. I thought it was a piece of shit.

The funny thing is, all I want is a timer on my 40 second long video because it's a portal 2 speed run. If it wasn't for that little timer that I want, I just would've sticked to windows movie maker :/

If you want a timer, I can give you one. I made one for my race videos.

Let me upload it somewhere and send you a link.

It's a convenient three hour duration.

EDIT: I realize now that since you mentioned Windows Movie Maker, you probably don't have the option to collage it over your footage...

Alright, that would be very nice.

Here you go

Good luck.

I feel that I should also mention that it's on a black backdrop, because I set it in the black space between the players' frames. You should either do put some black space (not recommended) or put it in a place that it doesn't obscure the video, like a corner.

Yeah, just checked your edit to the comment. Indeed windows movie maker doesn't support it. I actually was able to figure out how to put a fancy timer next to my speed run. It's the rendering part that just doesn't want to work, probably because I have the wrong settings.

Here you go friend, try this.

All of the settings you have are higher than my video settings. I don't see how that would help?

don't assume that higher settings = worse rendering speed. It all depends on the codec quality

I'm suspecting that your hard drive is slow as hell. (laptop = 5400RPM_
or your laptop is doing some weird shit downclocking your i7 or something

Euhm, I have a SSD, so a slow hard drive shouldn't be the problem.

Maybe its only using one core?

Maybe it is. How do I change the settings for that?

Buying a program that I want to use once for a simple timer? I'm sorry but I don't have that money.

too bad ppl resort to pirating immediately instead of looking for freeware alternatives first.

It always amuses me how people pirate the most expensive professional software and then are confused with all the settings and don't know what to do.

I just wanted a timer which WMM doesn't provide and a friend recommended this to me. He said this program worked 'naturally'. I was able to figure out everything till the rendering part. If you know another video editing tool that is easier and gives the option for a timer, then I'll be glad to hear it.

just a timer? EZ:
1) Download k-lite codec pack, install
2) Open your recorded video
3) right click on k-lite player >> options >> external filters >> add filter
4) select ffdshow video decorder
5) Re-open your recorded video
6) Pause it, look at your taskbar icons (near the clock), double click the red icon that says "FFv"
7) In the left pane, scroll down, check "OSD", in the main pane, select "Current playing time", press ok
7.a) OPTIONAL, change text and position there
8) Open your fraps
9) Re-open your recorded video but this time, re-record it with fraps
10) Result
