All depends on which kind of comedy you enjoy. Satirical? Slapstick?

well basically something like i don't know, with a story and funny
don't know how that is described, Ace Ventura was funny so i guess that's one kind, and there is Louie CK makes me smile too, dark comedy is good too,

I enjoyed watching Hot Fuzz (2007), and I must say that The Green Hornet (2011) was quite enjoyable as an action-comedy movie. Can't think of anymore at the moment...

+1 for Hot Fuzz, but that's British comedy. Not everyone "gets" that.

Others you might try include:

  • It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (mostly slapstick)
  • Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (mostly intellectual humor/farcical)
  • Straight to Hell (black comedy)
  • Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (situational comedy)
  • Airplane! (spoof comedy)
  • When Harry Met Sally (romantic comedy)
  • Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (standup comedy)
  • Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks comedy)
  • Dr. Strangelove (satire comedy)
  • Ghostbusters (beer & pretzels comedy)
  • This is Spinal Tap (mockumentary)
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Monty Python comedy)

Bravo! It's amusing that you categorise both Mel Brooks and Monty Python as genre. Totally with you on this, though I prefer Python over Brooks.

I did that because Monty Python and Mel Brooks' movies are so iconic. Their movies have a particular style and appeal to a specific audience. Same thing with Adam Sandler (The Wedding Singer) and the Farrelly Brothers (Stuck on You).

I'm far from being British, but I really liked Hot Fuzz and didn't think it was hard to "get". I guess it just depends on one's taste in movies.

Actually, I think it depend upon whether or not you find irony and the lampooning of "proper behavior" to be funny. Movies like Jackass are on the opposite side of the spectrum and appeal to a different audience.

Indeed. (Jackass sucks. :P)

You should check out Archer. It's not a movie though, but it's one of the most consistently funny shows out there. Same goes for King of the Hill.

Ted.

Really decent comedy movie.

Also, David Zucker's movies is so fucking funny, like: Airplane!, Naked Gun, Scary Movies. You must have to watch it.

I have been thinking of this lately. I love comedies, but it does not seem to be possible to create a truly amazing comedy. Most comedies are good, some are very good, but there are no Shawshank Redemptions of comedies.

At least if you do not count that British series Monty Python, which a lot of people do not like, but a lot of other people think is just the best thing ever.

Anchorman is probably the best standard modern comedy.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog is one of the best things ever, but I don't know if I'd recommend it to someone who's trying to stop feeling "kinda down".

My list is rather short now that I am looking at other suggestions in this thread. I have no idea how I could have left out stuff like Monty Python movies, Airplane!, The Blues Brothers, Naked Gun, Hot Shots!, Spaced Invaders, Big Trouble in Little China, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, A Fish Called Wanda. So many good funny movies.

She's Out Of My League comes to mind. It seems like a chick flick, but its got a good story and its funny as hell. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is filled with hilarious and geeky bits. Plus, I've got a huge soft spot for Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
