So basically you pay 10 dollar a month and then have access to certain group of games, which you stream.
Not something for me, but maybe it is for some, atleast it's a new player to the group.
Although there will be games that can only be played till a limited time.

If you scroll to the bottom, apparently you can get a free 14 day trial and see all there is to offer. Still, this isn't my cup of tea, so not even gonna bother with the trial.

6$ a month just to rent. With that amount you can buy Humblebundle bundle and OWN those games. Plus there are zero AAA-games, hell, most of them are indie games.

Skip and never look back. :D

Personally I'd be fine with renting games for, say, $10 a month, since for me they're more-or-less just one-use stuff anyways, so while I like growing my library, it's essentially just as useless as just renting the ones I play. And that's not even going to the whole "you own the games" argument sans DRM-free stuff.

But the reason why this one, like its predecessors, will fail, is that most people don't have the bandwidth and stability in their connection for cloud gaming to be viable, so their theoretical client base is quite small. A single-player game lagging or being completely unplayable just because the kids next door eat up all the bandwidth from the building? Yeah, how about no.

Don't forget that for that 6$ you know what do you rent, while HB is always a jack in the box before starting. Or you can end up with a month with PS games, two week no bundle then a software one. (In that case ofc you keep your 6$)
I think similar streaming services are best for people who want to try out a lot of games to decide what to buy, or for someone who knows the games can be finished - for them a known palette of games to play worth more than a few to have. (Vast majority of games won't get replayed anyways)

well, the idea of game renting is not that stupid, actually. humble monthly gives you ~6 games. here you rent 360 games. most people play a game one time and then never touch it again. so "owning" it on steam is not even that useful. so, what's the better deal. i can see this concept working for some people.

the quality of the games is another topic, though. only very few AAA games (mostly older ones, like Alan Wake).

I have 1800 games in my library from which 100 are good and playable games. Now, if I'd make this kind of service, I'd definitely put the best and most wanted games on the front page, which sounds logical if I don't want to put all of the available games on the public list.
They have only bundled games displayed there. Second problem is, most of them are Steam games. Where are all the Origin, uPlay games? I know it requires a contract with big developer companies to make that possible - but if you're going low you're gonna end up low.

Go big or go home. :D

you also "rent" licenses to play those games!

Yeah well, "renting" games from Steam for 10 years, still valid. It's just a way of saying "if we go bankrupt, you can't sue us". If these guys go bankrupt (which they most likely will) they won't have to pay you back already paid month(s) as well. :)

Isn't Origin access cheaper than that? for games you can actually download instead of streaming them.
I don't see these services being successful until internet speeds get good enough for enough people so the possible customers can actually consider it a viable option.

That makes a huge difference, now that service sounds like a nice deal. Not for me still, but I think there is a market out there for it.
I just read what Lugum wrote, didn't bother to look at the page in detail. Thanks for the info.

yeah, it's nothing for me either (i probably have all games they offer anyway xD). but i agree, the service might be nice for a certain group of gamers. if you someone is interested in the games they offer and usually plays a game once and then never touches it again, this might be a decent deal.

Origin access also seems to have nicer games in my opinion. I actually use Origin access and so far, it has been worth it. There are some pretty good and expensive games in there.

Yeah, it makes more sense for more people. I don't use it cause my Origin library doesn't get much love currently(I never touched BF4 despite having friends that play it) and it will most likely be a waste of money.

At the moment I don't play a lot of Origin games either, but every time my brother comes over we play a bunch of Fifa, which is great fun. And when I have more time I tend to play some of the other games there as well. The nice thing is that they keep adding games to it, so you're never really done with all games (although it doesn't grow that fast).

it's actually not a streaming service like OnLive, it seems.

No Video Streaming Play the real game from your own PC super-fast. Utomik downloads a small part to your disk, enough for you to start playing quickly while the rest loads to your PC. Enjoy a 100% awesome experience.

I wonder if there's some sort of company franchising out this kind of service. I noticed that OnePlay, the company that bought out Desura/IndieRoyale, offers a very similar service apart from them also including Android in the mix. Seems odd to me that a company who seems to primary operate as a G2A-like grey market game reseller would have some sort of proprietary game rental technology.

Hm, so far each I've seen was a bundled one. While I wouldn't recommend it for someone who actively bought bundles because of the already owned games, but thinking about giving access to all of these games for 6$ a month... if someone's new to games and want to find what they do like, or to get a pretty hefty catalogue for a kid as a gift... When I was a teen I would have been endlessly happy for having more than a dozen games, only 3-4 of them being enjoyable on a long run

That's a good point. Most people here probably won't be interested in it, since we tend to have pretty big libraries already. But if you're new to gaming...

I remember being extremely happy whenever I got a new game and I would play it for a very long time. At some point I had like 15 games and thought it was a lot. :p

This thread reminded me of OnePlay (the company that bought Desura and IndieRoyale) that also mention unlimited play. And checking the website now, saw that they have a promotion of 12 months for 1 dollar. Has anyone used them or know of them, are they reliable?

I thought the same. Didn't see that promo though! Looks like they also link their full PC game list (1,308 games) here: http://www.oneplay.com/en/rent/categories/platform/pc/Item_page/1

Looks like you buy a gift voucher and redeem that? At least there's no recurring subscription or authorization, and you can checkout with PayPal so you don't have to give them credit card details. It is worrying that their "Terms of Service" leads to an error page though. They also claim to have "over 1,000,000 subscribers" which sounds like a fabrication to me given the obscurity of the site.

Hope everything's on the up and up with them. One nice thing that Utomik does is announce their partnerships with publishers (Kalypso, Gamehouse, Meridian4, etc.) in their news section. OnePlay has titles from many of the same publishers (minus like Telltale, Kalypso) but also a couple games I wouldn't expect to see there. I'm tempted to chuck a buck at them to see how everything works with their client/DRM and to play a couple of things that pop out to me (Goliath, SKYHILL, Finding Teddy 2, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter).

Edit: Android game list (653): http://www.oneplay.com/en/rent/categories/platform/android/Item_page/27

Well, for $1 I decided to give OnePlay a try.

The signup/checkout process was crazy disastrous. For PayPal they use some weird checkout system and they request authorization for payments later (which you can revoke at any time of course). Then they sent me a voucher. The instructions on the store page say to visit /redeem to use it, but if you have an account that takes you to your account page. I couldn't find out where to put it, so I went incognito and went to /redeem. It said the voucher was for 30 days? And when I put in my email to register it said already in use. So I went the dropdown "Plans" on the site and found out there was a place to enter a code there. There it simply said that it was a 100% off coupon, and offered me a choice of VIP for a period ranging between 30 days and 2 years. I picked one year (For $68.04) and magically when I hit next it was $0. Presumably if you don't cancel or deauthorize then they'll rebill you for $68.04 in a year.

So the client. Got that downloaded. It installed to c:. It's a really basic web browser-esque client and it's like browsing a dumbed-down lower-res version of the store. Disastrous to browse. But if you manage to find what you want and hit "Download" the game gets put in your "My Games" section and starts downloading (the client appears to use the BitTorrent protocol for this). When it downloads, you hit install and it automagically installs to your C: drive. Guess you'll have to mess with junctions (redirecting the folder to another drive) if you want to install elsewhere :x

Once the games are installed you can run them. The first time you run them you go through a one-time activation process in which you'll have to enter your email address and password. Each game has a 2-machine activation limit and, according to ProtectionID, under the hood it's using SecuROM for activation. After the games are installed and activated they run even if you're offline.

The couple games I downloaded, which were recentish, were out of date compared to their Steam versions but they ran fine.

If it wasn't only $1 I'd be pretty annoyed.

This doesn't sound that good, but as you said for a dollar it might be passable. I'm still waiting, the last email I got said this:

"We regret that you have not received your purchase yet, we hope to send you your order within the coming days."

I got that email like 15 hours ago. Did you have to do something for the authorization?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My order was processed in about a minute. I used a verified PayPal account with matching email address to checkout.

I came in expecting the worst so I'm not too bummed. It reminds me a lot of Desura. Everything works and it's probably the publishers' fault for not supplying new builds as disappointing as that was. Might try poking Support when I get back home.

Utomik's client seems a lot nicer from what I've seen of it on their streams, but OnePlay is functional and $1 is a great deal since there's at least 10 games I'll play over the next year.

On the AAA front there's also PS Now for about $15/mo with its library of PS3 games, although that is a streaming service and not a download service.

And agreed. I do find it an interesting topic of discussion though. All these kind of services I can recall have died (Gametap, OnLive).
