So I have an older tablet. A POS one but I can't afford to get a new one yet.
It's a Verizon Ellipsis 8. I know, I know. It was basically free after the rebate and was a gift from the parents.

So I've had it for about 3 years and despite the fact that it can barely keep up with itself on some games, it's good for watching videos on.

So the last couple of days I've noticed something new happening. While the tablet charges, it goes into a repetitive boot and app optimizing loop. It does stop sometimes but if I leave it on the charger it starts again.

Could this be a sign that the thing is on it's last legs and is dying?

If so, then it's the perfect time to watch unlimited porn on it. Um, I'm not sure I meant to say that. >_<

I don't know about the app optimisation. Does it do that when you just restart it, or is it specific to this problem?

3 years old likely means that the battery is in pretty bad condition, which could be a cause of reboots. You could try turning the power off before recharging.

Never saw it do the app optimization before. When it normally restarts, it goes through the normal boot sequence and stays booted. This only seems to happen while charging and only within the past couple of days.

It's possible that something in storage got trashed when it rebooted unexpectedly, or that it does this automatically whenever there's an unexpected restart.

App optimisation typically happens after an OS update. It might be that the tablet thinks for some reason that's what happened.

I also JUST noticed that the other dy I had 40% storage space and today it was 1% after not downloading anything. So I transferred all the pictures I had, and uninstalled the games I installed and it only went to 10% free space.

I'm starting to think the HDD in it might be shot.

I think it's factory reset time, as proximus has suggested. You've already cleaned it up, just go to settings and tell it to reset itself.

Could be some virus managed to get root access and started download tons of app on your phone. Check the list of apps to see if there is anything suspicious.

Already went through the apps. Nothing new on it. Unless there are hidden ones.

Is it Android? Android will often (usually?) optimize apps if you are booting while charging. I can't speak to why it only recently started doing this, unless you somehow got an update to the OS?

Yes and this is the first time I have seen it happen on three android devices I have owned.

I was kind of hoping to avoid that as the last time I did that on a phone, the phone bricked for some reason.

On the brighter side, it did give me that chance to get the current phone I still use now. :P Shame I had a job when that happened.

Might be worth a try since i'm guessing you don't really need the tablet for work-related reasons (as you stated under this post that you might just save a few dollars). Factory reset shouldn't brick the device awyway, it's a weird thing that your phone stopped working all of a sudden unless it did had already some issues.

That's exactly what my Ellipsis 8 did....right before it died and never turned on again. It did it for about a month on and off and one day it just would come on at all. I hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine...

Well, if that's the case then I'll be saving a few dollars on my bill since I'll be removing the tablet service.

Thanks for that. I had a feeling it was going.

Can you convince your parents to get you a new tablet? :)

No. And I am not going to try.

I HATE asking them for money for anything.

Probably not related, but I had similar problems with a Dell Venue tablet. Turns out that there was some wonkiness with the battery connection and, long story short, now I have to pop the back and disconnect and reconnect the battery every time I want to boot it up. 😟

If it's a motherboard issue putting your disassembled tablet in the oven might solve the problem (google for more details about heating the motherboard). Just don't do it if you don't want to risk losing the device though.

Could be the charger, think i had something similar with my archos, can't try another one?

Else yeah, factory reset.

I had the exact same issue with my phone. Almost ditched the thing but a friend told me it was the battery (I laughed in his face) so I tried to change it and lo and behold... he was right. That may not be an option for a tablet but it did the trick.

Ok, a week later and I have learned that it might not be the battery as I usually charge it every few days while using it for videos, and one easy to run game, and have no issues with the charge. Also this booting loop ONLY happen while charging.

MOST bizarre.
