In the above situation, what would you do?
Trying to trade for it is a good idea...don't know why I didn't think of that.

I had a problem with a key recently and just did what everyone should, suck it up and purchase the game at full price. Trading for it also works though if you can find a reasonable trade offer :D

I accidentally created a giveaway for the full age of empires 2 + dlc when I was meaning to do a dlc only giveaway (from humble bundle). Didn't bother closing the incorrect giveaway and ended up buying the game + dlc at full price from steam store. The game, got discounted during summer sale the day after my gift was sent. Oh well. Lost like $20, but hoping that I made someone happy.oh and then I had to recreate the dlc ga cuz I didn't want that key

Try your luck on steamtrades, you might find a copy cheap there.

You can gift him another game, i think he will be happy however.
Comment has been collapsed.
True, but I'll still have the Not Received. Worth considering.
Comment has been collapsed.
I hope you are not suggesting that he gives the winner another game and ask them to mark it received.
Comment has been collapsed.
Agreed with TempeteJoachim. If I give him a different game, I will not ask him to mark Received. He can actually get suspended for that (not activating won gift).

If i were that guy i would take the risk and do him the favor. He's not doing anything malicious or something. Would deserve a ban if it was a serial action in order to get more points but in this case a game would be recieved however (unless you give away GTA V and the real game is bad rats).
Not suggesting anything, just sharing my point of view :)

Apologize profusely, explain the mistake, offer another game, and accept the Not Received
You can do that, but instead of getting a not received, you can ask them if they agree to the deletion of the giveaway and if they do, create a ticket to get it deleted
Comment has been collapsed.
Hmm, I didn't know that was an option. Thanks for the note...I guess support will pretty much automatically agree as long as they know the Winner is on board?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes. Also, an even better option that I only remembered of right now : instead of deleting the giveaway, you can asked for the giveaway to be changed for the game you gave to the winner, if you decide to give them a key for another game ("Change giveaway game" when creating a ticket)

I had to do this with dundundun...Skyrim. I got a key from someone sometime last summer, waited until my birthday to do a GA (October),posted the ga and when it ended lo and behold...it was used. I scrambled to buy a TF2 key and then find a trader willing to part with a gift copy for a single key:)

If you use the money to help starving children then it's okey.

I don't like the Red mark. And I don't like not doing what I said I'd do (give the game). But it's rough paying $15 for a bundle game just to avoid a red mark.
I'm going to keep trying to trade for it.
And thanks. <3

For anybody who cares for an update: the person is being very nice. But he has tons of games and I don't have anything else he wants. So I will look for a trade for the original game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Worse case, I think I'll just buy the game. Because the person is being nice.

the way i see it it was your mistake not the winners, suck it up buy it and move on and be more careful in the future.
i had a similar thing happen recently were i posted a giveaway and the site lagged and i hit the "submit" button twice thinking it didn't take the first click, well it created two giveaways so i had to buy the second game full price as i didnt want to punish some random winner because of my mistake.

I'm currently facing the same problem with my Gmod copy. Had 18 copies when I did the GA. Sold all of them by the time it ended. I completely forgot about it. So yeah, screwed over myself, and now have to find a replacement. However in my case, its easy to find a copy at 2 keys instead of 1 key (Usual rate I buy in). Good luck with your problem though. I doubt it will be any easy to solve without you feeling the pinch in your wallet.

To answer the question in the topic: Yes
Regarding your own specific case - I wouldn't pay $15 to replace a bundle key. I did pay €2,5 once though...
If you can't find it cheap I'd just take the not received mark - and there's always the option to change it later if and when you do find a cheap copy :)

I'd try and make things right by doing what everyone else is suggesting - trading.
If you're having no luck then I appear to have a spare key for this - hit me up on Steam if you want it (for free).

Thank you-- I'd be happy to trade for it. Here's my trade topic.
If you don't see anything there, then maybe a TF2 key or something? I don't know the TF2 key market very well.

I'm embarrassed now and misread the situation, Thought it was for Luxor: 5th Passage after clicking the link at the end of your OP. After actually reading the whole post properly, seeing that it was for a $15 game and matching that up to your profile it looks like it's either Ironclad Tactics or Contrast. Unfortuantely I don't have a key for either so I'm going to have to withdraw that offer. Sorry for getting your hopes up.
Comment has been collapsed.
LOL no problem-- it was an easy mistake. =)
It was for Ironclad Tactics.

Get yourself a free account on Barter.vg. the best site for trading. It will find it for you and someone that wants your trades. Almost certain you can make the trade very easy. They also got a very good systeem to avoid scammers. Dicovered it a few months ago and got myself 15 wishlisted games in 2 weeks! If you have to look through all the offers on steamtrade it will take you days. This will take you minutes with a better result as it imports everything (if you want) from your steam account.
I just checked for you there are 5 people having this game for trade on Barter. Good luck.

When I go to https://barter.vg/browse/, I don't see it. Do I have to register/log in first?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, I think I see it now. I'm trying to figure out the site. I registered through Steam.

I'm working on it. This is somewhat unfamiliar territory for me. I don't know all of the sites or the trick of the trade or whatever.
Comment has been collapsed.
This person has all of the games that I have available for trade. =(

If you do not have copy of the game, then just apologize to the winner.
This site is mainly for giving extra copies of games that we do not need and maybe some1 want them .
But buying game for 15dollars just because your fault is not good idea...

Dude!
It's 1 euro here: https://www.g2a.com/ironclad-tactics-cd-key-steam-global.html
Just grab it haha, you can miss 1 euro right?
Comment has been collapsed.
It looks like it's not, but i got many games from there, i'm also not using their G2A guaranty shield since i never had problems.
Got Valve complete pack there for 25 euro
Comment has been collapsed.
I've bought some keys there as well and never had a problem. But that was before I knew if you have bad luck and the key was obtained by false credit cards you can get into a lot of trouble with your total steam account. When I found that out I did not think it was worth taking the risk anymore. But you are right, it can easily work just fine as well.

Been having a bit of a look round.
Funstock Digital (official store) is doing it for £4-something which is $6 and a bit.
Tremor Games don't have any.
Someone on Dispenser.tf wants 6 keys for a gift copy, ouch.
Nobody in the group buys steam group has it
G2a who I'd be weary of dealing with (grey market) has it for $1.12
Then there's the various traders on the trade section here - can see you've contacted one already.
Comment has been collapsed.
LMAO! Thank you so much-- look at you! =)
The Funstock one must have been the one that a previous poster was referring to. $6 is sure better than $15.
Kinguin seems to have it for 2 or 3 dollars depending on if you buy "insurance," but I don't know anything about that site...
I do have a few irons in the fire looking around.
Thanks again, Sir. (or Ma'am for all I know).
Comment has been collapsed.
g2a and kinguin are "grey market", in this case (almost surely) those are just pple reselling bundle keys for a bit of profit (same as many in the trade section), so I would consider them, if you can't land a trade.
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you for the info. Yeah, it rings a bell that they are a little less than trustworthy. I'm more concerned with hacking/phishing/etc. than the key being bad at this point. I might still consider it.

So I have a situation of my own doing-- totally my fault. I created a (public) giveaway, and it turns out that due to an accounting error on my part, I'd already used the key for a different giveaway some time ago. So of course the winner tries to activate and gets "key already been used."
The game is a previously bundled game that is not currently on sale or bundled and costs US$15 retail. To "do the right thing," I'd have to drop another $15 on the game that I'd received in a bundle-- money that I could use to help starving children, buy several games on sale for the SG community, or go to the movies. Or, I can make the tactical decision no to, and just accept the Not Received on my record. I currently don't have any red marks on my record.
For what it's worth, if it had been a whitelist or group giveaway, or if I "knew" the winner from the Discussions, or he/she was clearly a generous gifter, then I don't think I'd have a problem buying another key.
[Edit: it's really interesting hearing all of the ideas. And yes, I missed the obvious solution of trading for another copy of the game. I'm working on that, and looking for discounts.]
[Edit 2: Situation solved]!
What do you all think?
