I wonder why EVERY SINGLE GAME I install on Steam has to install DirectX. Why on Earth?!?
Windows already comes with DirectX installed and for most users it is constantly kept up-to-date by windows update. So why installers don't just perform a check that the last (or minimum required) version is installed before proceeding instead of just blindly re-install it AGAIN??

It doesn't install it, it just runs the setup and sees that your version is up to date and closes.

Yeah but why can't steam remember it?

Because different games require different features of DirectX.

Yeah, i wonder why people who buy games on CD/DVD don't install it? oh, i know, because it does not matter!

If game creator need specific file he put it into game folder, steam is just stupid, that's all

In my opinion there should be 2 buttons on game site in steam library, instal game and instal dx etc.

I wonder that too, even old NFS 3 checked whether you have needed version installed and asked whether you want to reinstall it.

Uhm... I'm pretty sure every game has a modified DirectX for the game.

Thanks everyone for the replies, they quite clarified the issue.

Still, this system seems pretty stupid to me. MS install and licensing systems in first place, but not much surprise there.
I'd rather have a one-off installation of ALL directx versions and sub-versions, past and present, and that would be it. Games could then pick up their version of choice:)

I believe that IS it. What's the difference between what you said and reality?

He meant that it was installed once, and that Steam wouldn't try to reinstall it every time.

http://steamcleaner.tikione.fr/en/ You can use this to remove all those unneccesary installers. If you'r anything like me, you'll be surprised how much disk space they use up.

Thanks I have used it and that's precisely after noticing how much junk those installers leave behind that I wondered why they are run every time
