but, normally, for a website i'm not sure about, i just bring up steam in my browser, login there, and then head to the website, and i should be already logged in. if not, i ignore the website.

If you use steamguard - you acc cant be hacked without hacking your email. other way - using steamlogin check for green bar in upper left corner of a browser window - It must be there and must be writing smth like " Safe site: Valve corp." etc. i dont know what does it write in english :D

'steam login' thing is made by phishers who get ur account info
change ur passwords as quick as possible

An easy way to avoid hacking :
Connect first here : http://store.steampowered.com/
And then when you will try to connect with you account, you will not have to write your password.
