The first Borderlands just so I could be sure my comp could handle it. I'm sure there's others but that's what comes to mind first.

Eh, I don't believe that was your only reason, You can test if you can run it without downloading

explain how when there is no demo. and dont tell me those crappy sites that check requirements.

...Not true.

Very true, it's a term called "eyeballing" I do it all the time and I only can't play the games about 90% of the time. The results are phenomenal!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah thats not always accurate, minimum specs sometimes just outright are wrong, I see no harm in pirating a game to check specs or to even see if one likes it, but then again a simple demo could fix all of that, all games should have demos, even open world ones. I mean if Sleeping Dogs, Just Cause 2, and others can whats stopping every game?

Really, how so? Borderlands doesn't have a Demo as far as I know.

with some games it says there is i5 in my pc.. but i have i7 :D

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's because the most discernible difference between i5 and i7 in terms of desktop cpu's is that the i7 has hyperthreading. Most games haven't really utilised hyperthreading as of yet and they tend to just identify the i7 as an i5 in that manner.

If your PC is borderline it is worth it to check with a demo, or failing that, pirating.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

that isnt exact and doesnt have every model and driver versions. The best way to find out if your pc can run it is to try it. if it doesnt have a demo then pirate it to see if you can run it. nothing worse than buying a game and not being able to play it

As others have said... those sites are not accurate. Told me I could not run Skyrim but I can, lucky for me. More unfortunate people were told they could, bought a game, then found they could not run it.

That site is not reliable.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The site can be useful, but it's not always accurate. It tells me my computer can blow WoW's max settings out of the water, but if I go over mid settings my FPS drops to horrid.

At the end, actually loading a game to test it is much more accurate than going to a website that's just estimating based off of the specs of your hardware without taking compatibility into account.

I swear, I have rarely ever bought a game on a whim because of an advertisement. However, Good game demos have made me spend more money than I would like to admit. Granted, Bad game demos do make me not buy the game, but 9/10 times I would not have bought the game anyway. It is a shame, but I think it also has something to do with the fact that fewer big games are being developed for PC.

Warcraft III and Minecraft is what I recall. After Steam, I stopped with piracy.

I would buy Homeworld 2 if I found it in my country or as digital download. If I buy it on Amazon, I'll spend more on shipping than the game itself...

Same here and I am a dev :D Well, I buy the games after.

And no, devs don't decide this, marketing department does.

Ya know, PC games don't get optimization these days so not releasing demos it's a way of hiding it so that you can then blame it all on piracy :D

So blame it all publishers & marketing not the devs. I actually feel my work is apreciated if you pirate my stuff :D

I've pirated:

  • YS: Oath of Felghana (played before it was on Steam)
  • Morrowind
  • Terraria
  • Audiosurf

Games that I torrented but still didn't buy:

  • To the Moon

I'm 100% sure that there were more (I just forgot...)

Oh and this is a list of games I torrented and actually played more than 10 hours into and bought. There were many more that I pirated but didn't buy because my computer couldn't handle the graphics or because the game didn't work for me.
