I'm a big fan of Warhammer 40K games and I though I might read some books to learn more about the universe. The thing is, there are tons of them and I have no idea where to start. Which one/s would you recommend as a good starting point?

EDIT:
Just a thanks to those who took their time and recommended me some books. I went with the Horus Heresy series as it seemed as a good starting point since it takes place in 31st Millennium. So far I've first three books. The first two were really great, third not so much (not very good writing, lack of characters' further development).
Now I wonder, should I continue with this series or try something else? Thanks again.

I would start with the Gaunt's Ghosts series, that's what I did.
Get The Founding, it is the first of the three omnibus books, if you like that you will probably enjoy the other Dan Abnett books.

Start with the Horus Heresy, there's no better place to start imho.

I'm not familiar with Warhammer 40K, but I remember hearing Totalbiscuit talking about which books he enjoyed:

TotalBiscuit - Recommended Warhammer 40k literature?

The Horus Heresy series is probably the best series, currently up to 27 books in the series though

As someone currently reading the Horus Heresy series, it's pretty okay I guess. It would help not having a lot of background knowledge in the lore, since you'd already know who and what survives each event if you did, which is what makes it a good introduction. That being said, I don't really have much experience in the post-heresy books, so I can't really recommend anything. Heard things about Gaunt's Ghosts though. Good things.

The Ciaphas Cain series. Very funny, exciting and newbie friendly novels.

Ciaphus Cain. Though it does take some liberties from the source material (See: Sisters of Battle), it is a fairly light and humorous take on the setting, while still being distinctly 40k.

Horus Heresy and Ciaphas Cain are probably the best starters indeed.
