I want to burn my last cents on GMG before the credit makes poof in some days and I guess a game (only one) from Legacy of Kain series could do it.
I don't know the series and I'd like to pick the best one, in the unlikely case I decide one day to undust it out of my backlog, where it's going to fall for some time without remedy.
Thanks for you advice!!

EDIT: I will get only 1 game, not the full series; Blood Omen is not an option on steam and GMG sale, thus is not included in the poll.

EDIT2: You liked it, you voted it, you get it!! (my backlog thanks:)

Which one of these game is the one you recommend for somebody not familiar with the series?

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2

Is a great saga, maybe you must buy the first one, Soul Reaver! (Really the first one is Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain but is not for Steam T_T)

I'd love to recommend blood omen 1, but it's not included, so go with 2.

It's a story based series, so I'd make sure to start with the first game [Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver], myself..
Especially since it's presented as a mystery of sorts at the start.

That being said, the Blood Omen Games are a lot more straightforward action-RPG, while the Soul Reaver games are more platforming/puzzle-solving, and the two storylines don't really require each other- so Blood Omen 2 is an option if you prefer something more straightforward.

I'd definitely favor Blood Omen 1 as well, but it was never ported to PC :(

If you're not planning on ever playing the entire series through, and just want a single game to know what you missed, Defiance is definitely the best option, being the last of the series, and allowing you to control both characters.

I have a copy, it's for win 95, although not sure if it was the original release or a re-release. Don't have the box anymore either.

I'm ashamed at how long it took me to figure out what "cof cofbackup copy cof cof" meant

I'm glad you're gonna get into this series! Be prepared to be amazed, dazzled, shocked and awed at the incredible story telling. I highly recommend starting with Soul Reaver 1. Blood Omen 1 is also a great starting point, though it doesn't do a lot of story that isn't also explained in the other games. The ideal order is (From a story point of view) Blood Omen 1 -> Soul Reaver 1 -> Soul Reaver 2 -> Legacy of Kain: Defiance (I noticed that one wasn't on your list. Be sure to remember that one!)

However, I beg of you, don't play Blood Omen 2. Blood Omen 2 was created by a different studio without the director of the other games in the series, and as such its story is a mess with more plotholes than swiss cheese (there's literally only one loose end that said game ties up in the story, and even then it's not really all that conclusive).

Actually no, Blood Omen 2 is developed by Crystal Dynamics too (director is different) but they tried a different game engine and gameplay and they pretty much failed. (: It's the black sheep of the series. It still covers one hell of a subject (of the story) though. (: Also, there is always Youtube if you don't want to play it.

With BO2, the order is... Blood Omen 1 -> Soul Reaver 1 -> Soul Reaver 2 -> Blood Omen 2 -> Legacy of Kain: Defiance

Definitely agree with what others have said ...

Follow the story in order for best appeal. So if only getting 1 game, get the first one :-)

  1. Soul Reaver
  2. Soul Reaver 2
  3. Defiance

Buy Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and watch Blood Omen from Youtube. It's incredibly different from series' other games. As a fan and having a translation project of the series, I can assure you that Soul Reaver should be your first game.

I personally didn't enjoy Soul Reaver the last time I played it. It was fun as heck when it first came out, but I just didn't enjoy it later on. Blood Omen 2 though didn't age as poorly in my eyes. I haven't tried Defiance, though. Also I didn't play them in order to see the story or anything. My opinion really doesn't mean much at all.

Soul Reaver 1 is the way to go if you never played this series before.

It's more like blocks puzzle solving everytime, kinda annoying, but well worth it

I remember having a great immersive experience with Soul Reaver on my Dreamcast. Even for the story itself the first one can be enough.

I was thinking of doing exactly the same: using up my GMG credit on a Legacy of Kain game.
Soul reaver would make sense because of the story, but it just seems a bit of a waste to me not to buy the full set, as I'm pretty sure I'd like to play them all. So I'll probably use the credit on something different altogether.
