UPDATE:
One mod has allready been taken down with DMCA claims, as the author did not have permision to use the assets.
Guess Valve has some re-thinking to do.

Is this a good idea?

People should just encourage the makers of the popular mods to take their mods off the workshop at this point. Maybe that would get a reaction out of Valve. No honest modder should support forcing people to pay for mods.

They (well... some of them, but some important ones) have done just the opposite, they have updated their mods only for the workshop versions, and left their nexus versions outdated :)

Yes, i'v noticed, i hope they're enjoying the crazy amount of hate and flaming they're getting. hope those pennies Valve is tossing them are worth it :)

And I thought the Steam Workshop was a very convenient way of getting mods..

I think its a bad idea. It was more good if they made a donation system for the people who make mods. I mean if i like a mod , i have a button to donate "x" money to that person.

That would've been cool. I can imagine donating a pittance from my Steam Wallet if I find that I really enjoy a mod.

And what if one of the mods I'm already subscribed to through the workshop will come with a fee later?

" a direct upgrade from the free version to the paid version is not possible."
Just found this on one of the mods I was subscribed to, they removed it and re-posted for €5 :\

Well. I just hope they don't add this to too many games, don't own Skyrim on PC and now it looks like I might never buy it. Don't know how many of the good mods will remain free.

i think the idea behind this is to encourage developers to make their games modding friendly, because you know now theres a great reson to do it rather that just be good guys, if thats the case im all for it.

Only that now you have to have some extra cash on your hand to get some bonus features, making mods simply user made DLC's.

As a modder for a game (NHL 2004 Rebuilt) i am disgusted by this because you do mods because you love the game. You want to preserve the game and make it more enjoyable to people who just want to try it out. I have spent count less hours modding. I spent 2 months working on the same part of one mod and it was grueling. Why did i do it? I love the community. I dont want your money. I want you to enjoy the mod.

How the hell does this even work?

1.buy mod
2.rip files out of .vpk
3.paste files into my own custom directory
4.refund mod

To make things worse most mods use scripts from other mods or various libraries, and the whole things rips from game assets, which means that there's plenty of takedown requests to go around.

Also, 75%? What the hell, Valve.

And if the mod breaks with a game patch in a week then you can't get a refund, and the modder has no obligation to fix it at all because they already have your money. Early access mods are already a thing.

Just wait until intentionally broken games are released on day 1, with paid patches as DLC.

I'd prefer a donate option, no one aside from rich kids are gonna buy mods so workshop might as well be dead now.

ha ha
perfect plan!

  1. create a legit project
  2. advertise, create many useful tools for your project
  3. once it has million of users convert the "features" into trash to avoid profiters
  4. ??
  5. Monthly fee to login on steam
  6. MUCH PROFIT!

thanks to steam i will come back to my pirate days eventually, just wait for it lol

Actually that is not true. They will get real money out of it, not Steam wallet credit.

He basicly said it's not a bad thing for modders to get paid but Valve did a piss poor job with the whole thing and are being greedy asses with the 75% cut. That's how i understood it anyway.

In theory, yes. But as history has repeat itself so many times surly it will again.
Good modelers got some money from donations, and bad nothing. But now good one will only get 25% of asking price, which will probably be much less then from donations. While bad will also get some which is more then nothing from before, and they will now keep making more and more broken staff.
In the end good modelers will get less money, while rest of money will go to Valve and other not so worthy.

You need to make $100 in sales to even see some of your money. Everything belongs to Steam until then.

This will kill modding in the long run. More and more paid mods will emerge, then suddenly editors and modding tools become not free or paid DLCs, and only 'professional' modders remain and only these 3rd party DLCs to choose from.

Comment has been collapsed.

Dumb.
I can only imagine Gabe got this idea when he heard about what Unreal Tournament was doing, which I'm also a bit skeptical about. It's like, most official DLC isn't worth paying for anyway, why would some dinky armor be worth plopping down $5 for.

Now modding will be less something of a fan passion and more something you do if you want to make a quick buck. I can't wait to see how they try and implement DRM in mods next. Or how they'll handle all the incompatibilities with other mods.
