UPDATE:
One mod has allready been taken down with DMCA claims, as the author did not have permision to use the assets.
Guess Valve has some re-thinking to do.

I can only imagine that Bethesda liked the revenue possibilities, considering the amount of Skyrim mods.

Some ppl gonna pull their mods from Nexus.

Also Skyrim is on free weekend, which means you can buy mods even without buying the game lol.

I'm sure most people with actual, serious mods(not crappy skins) will continue to give their work out for free, just like until now, on Nexus and Moddb.

Yet so many people say i will not buy the game unless it is on Steam, well guess what they love people like you as they can keep finding ways to print money off you the more dependent you are on on system the easier it is for them to give you the shaft.

I dislike the workshop before, now i hate it even more. This will only lead to stupid prices and stupid dlc just like Greenlight games.

Skyrim i only use Nexus,if i think that the mod and the creator/s of it deserve money i will donate money to the cause,i will not do it through Steam so they get a cut of it,just another way for them to print money, they are good at coming up with that, but yet still can not be bothered with fixing support or all the trash games on steam.

Anyhow that is just how i feel i am not saying people have to agree with me and are free to disagree.

Gaben i swear only cares about printing money, what is next 5.00 to log into your account to help stop spam and bots

Hahaha. This is great.

This is going to remove every single reason I replay games in general. This will probably ruin my experience with most games since I have a trend of never being able to afford anything expensive (I'm implying me upgrading my setup = NO GO).

Now, don't get me wrong. This is great for modders because up until this point, it's been a god damn hobby done 'on-the-side' for most modders and this is why most mods don't get perfected or completed. If modders had some kind of compensation, they would probably focus on the modding more but I take part in modding because it is free. It's fan-made, community-based. It's not a marketed object or a business. I'm trying to say that this will bring in every kind of negativity that marketing something does and I include the elitist 'THIS IS A GREAT MOD THAT I MADE IN 5 MINUTES, FUCK YOU, I'M AWESOME' bullshit that these children sprout as dramatic 'news' on the internet.

The modders need support, this is true of course but look at the Nexus community. They have 'endorsements' which is pretty much a donation and it helps to give the modders the support they need when they spend countless hours on a single mod.

This may effectively destroy the whole connected experience of the modding-community but from what I have read so far on the page, you don't HAVE to pay for the mods and it is set by the modder I would assume. I can still see people trying to make a damn business out of this and that just isn't what the modding community is about.

If I'm paying for mods, they better damn well create some automatic mod-order set-up program and installations for the mods. Otherwise, fuck that. I go through enough shit for a free mod.

As for whether not I will support this myself? Well, I recall another thread talking about this and there has been some 'preview' news recently about this so I suppose I already made my decision. I will NOT buy mods. They aren't worth buying because even if you consider 1 dollar per mod, for a total of 20 dollars... Is 20 dollars going to be worth it? Probably not. 20 dollars is the average price of a game, I'd say. Is 20 dollars going to expand the gaming experience to the point where you are playing a whole game's worth of content plus the original game?

I'd pay $1-2 if its something significant enough to be considered as DLC (i.e. something I'd buy if it came from the publisher). I'd give a buck for a quality total conversion mod or player-made expansion, to support them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I mean something like that. Mods are far too many in quantity and variety that $1-2 is EXACTLY what would be expected for a mod in general. I mean, stuff like the Elsweyr mod for Oblivion or the uh... Morrowind or whatever the other expansion for Oblivion was. Those were incomplete but they could have become amazing expansive mods. Skyrim has one that I currently know of called 'Fastagar' or something like that. I'd pay, at most, 3-5 dollars for an expansion mod. That's not ripping them off, it's a mod that is being added onto the original game. Forget comparing them to actual DLCs. Those are CLEARLY overpriced as hell.

there is also the case were mods will STILL not be perfected or completed, and abandoned since the author already got his money and will start new mods to make even more... You know, like those early access shit...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't think they will allow for Early Access although I don't think I know all of the details. Do you pay for the mod even when it's still being developed?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i am pretty sure steam don't care about that, steam don't even have enough people for their support, they won't do anything to check if the mod released are working or not.
Also, the modder often need the feedback of the community to improve their mod, because if the mod is working with them, it may not work with others and they have to modificate their mod etc etc

Yeah, screw Steam in that regard. It's not new, either.

It is unacceptable to me as long as you have to pay for specific mods. In my POV Nexus' mechanism is very good and proved working for Skyrim community. I do give kudos and make small donations to mods I LOVE but it doesnt mean I have to pay every mod. It's clear that Valve (maybe Gaben) is getting greedy...

I guess its considered a new mod, when price tag is added...all other would go against the greediness of Valve/Bethesda ;-)

That's why I ran around and Subscribed to all of the mods I'd looked at before. I'm sure I missed a lot of good ones, but I wanted to grab the key ones before they're only available for $.

It seems that mods are now transforming into real DLC. Yeeeeaahno. BTW, remember that Gabe said that he offers better service than the pirates? Well, if there will be like idk game fixes that fixes all the issues from developers lazyness by modders, and selling them as DLC? Now this is where the line is broken, because then people are going to start an uproar, posting mod files in torrent sites so that others can enjoy these for free, instead of paying. I know, it will not support the authors, but if an author decides to become a dick, and asks from people money for fixed issues, HD models or enhanced graphics, then this is worse than EA's or Activision's practices. If other companies are going to start this, then there will be an inevitable video game crash, if enough people are going to realise that this is unnacceptable.

companies want a cut from mods..thats why there is no "donation"
companies are to lazy to create new stuff by themselfs, so they want to encourage modders

So before they invest ressources to create new game content..they found a better way: Let others do the work and even get money from it...

TL;TR lazy and greedy Bethesda/Valve

Do I agree with supporting modders? Hell yea. What I don't support is the way it's being handled. There should be a general pay what you want option before and after you download the mod. You pay how much you feel the mod (well I guess DLC now) is worth. Someone creates a collection of say 5 new followers? I'd pay like $1.50 or less for it. (I own the game on console thanks to a friend upgrading and giving it to me) I don't want to be forced to pay for stuff though.

I mean, some mods are worth paying for, but a lot of them already transition to stand alone games. I imagine that this just means that everything will be full of crappy knock off mods that suck, many with false advertising, trying to get people to shell out for mods made by someone without skill and who just wants to make a quick buck.
