Actually, in most cases it does. Bad graphics on a new game usually means that the game developer did not want to spend enough effort and time in the atmosphere, making the game less appealing and doesn't give you the atmosphere you would need to get a good experience. Try to take away Metro 2033's lighting, smoke, and other eye-candy components, and you would not have the same experience.
And look at the newest Aliens: Colonial Marines game. They didn't give a crap about graphics, they decided to rush it all. Usually you can see the rushing of development in graphics aspects.

I have to agree with you. While I loved Half Life and would argue it is still a game worth playing, what story? You open the doorway to an alien world and hordes of monsters pour out. Not exactly brilliant, have you played DOOM? Very similar. It wasn't until the expansions and Half Life 2 that they retconned some real meaning into game.

Bravery? Dem's irrational fanboy werds u talkin there.
Half Life 1 had practically no story to speak of. Just a premise and atmosphere. The G-Man isn't so much a character as he is wallpaper. It's barely better than Super Castlevania IV in that respect. And face it, Half Life 2 isn't much better. It has a vividly realized setting and sympathetic characters which automatically put it ahead of most of its contemporaries then and since, but that still doesn't make it 'great'. Especially when other games of its time such as Baldur's Gate, System Shock 2*, and Starcraft** actually managed to convey genuinely engrossing tales of their own.
This is not to say the Half Life games weren't great and don't hold up reasonably well to this day, far from it. But the appeal has always been the excellently executed and well-varied first-person shooting through spectacular set pieces, not the 'story' that existed only as premise and pretence for the gameplay, not as its purpose. Of course Mark Laidlaw left in enough tantalizing mystery to keep fans asking and guessing for more than a decade now, but I think its well overdue for people to realize that there never were any real answers to be found. It was all just set dressing.
You want 'good' video game stories? Here's a sample: Deus Ex. The Witcher. Cave Story. Portal. Warcraft 3. Planescape Torment. Now, these games may not have had the best execution. They may have been silly, tiny, or even fundamentally generic. But they were certainly stories worth remembering. It's that criterion that sets a good story apart from a competent one. And honestly, have any of the Half Life games managed it? Maybe it would if there was nothing better around. But there is, and there was.
*I haven't yet actually played System Shock 2 so I don't actually know how the plot goes or how well it's executed, but from what I can tell from cultural osmosis it probably stood head and shoulders above Half Life by virtue of Shodan alone.
**I last played Starcraft like over a decade ago. Maybe it's just nostalgia but I remember it being quite an enjoyable yarn, especially for a something that wasn't an RPG.
PS: "realy do not understand that graphics do not take big part in game if story is awesome."
Funny you should say that. I distinctly recall that one of Half Life 2's major selling points was it's impressive graphical fidelity for the time. It went up against Doom 3 and to a lesser extent the original Far Cry in the great graphics clash of '04.

^ An argumentum ad populum/verecundiam that doesn't challenge anything I said and is based off a single number that doesn't actually mean anything. All a metacritic score tells is that that the majority of critics aggregated by MC published overwhelmingly positive review scores for the game. It doesn't tell why the game is good, what aspects of the game are good or not, and often doesn't correlate with the actual popular option. Cases in point: 1, 2, 3. I am sure that those Baseball and Football games have terrific storylines because of their review scores, or that GTA4 was the single best game ever made.
Maybe you should actually try, y'know, supporting your opinions with actual reasoning instead of parroting the opinions of others.

"Lol,so what's the best game off all time by you? You'll never understand how Half Life serier are good.YOU ARE SAYING THAT HALF LIFE IS C*AP AND THE GAME IS RELEASED IN 1998.DID THEY HAD NVIDIA GTX 690 BACK THEN?CREATE A BETTER ONE AND THAN ACT SMART!!!"
Quoted so you can't edit it out. It's obvious you haven't even read my posts. As I had stated very clearly: "This is not to say the Half Life games weren't great and don't hold up reasonably well to this day, far from it. But the appeal has always been the excellently executed and well-varied first-person shooting through spectacular set pieces, not the 'story' that existed only as premise and pretence for the gameplay, not as its purpose."

I agree with you that graphics aren't everything, but I am ashamed to admit that some games are just too damn ugly for me to replay them. :S
As for the OP, just look at a few youtube gameplay videos and then decide if the graphics are unbearable for you.

Honestly it hasn't aged well, but Deus Ex HR doesn't quite capture the original's magic. Its hard to explain.

The graphics are fine, I played it within the last 3 years and I thought it was by far the best game I have ever played. Graphics don't mean shit. But if you're the type that has to have a really high graphic game with shit story and terrible game-play for the game to be "good" then stick with that.

I hate people who rip on people who like good graphics. It's like, just because they like good graphics, that must mean they love shitty games. Or if an old game has bad graphics, and people don't want to play it, that makes them shitty people. Some games it just isn't worth it.

Thanks for understanding. People assume I mean't good graphics = all that is important. Bad graphics can be a distraction is what I meant. Like I have Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic. Supposedly a good game. But I can't play more than 5 mins of it.
It's easier to give a crappy looking game time to build on you when you have first hand knowledge about how good it is. For instance, I still play FF7 but only because I played it when it first came out and love the story.

This -- You want to keep playing shit games? Go ahead, miss out on one of the greatest games of all time, it's your loss... Keep fooling yourself.
I replayed it before HR came out and still thought it felt better than the majority of games out there.

Crysis 3 has been fun so far for me...why the hate?
Deus Ex is excellent though.

Have you played it? Honestly I was not a fan of 2 and find this one much better story wise. I try not to bash tings before I play them though....
Indeed.

Yes, it's awesome. You at least have to try, the mods and hacks listed before this post should help you enough with the "ugliness". You'll probably run into things that are way below the modern standard (animations are atrocious!), but with those graphics mods and the awesomeness it should be enough to compensate! Aside from a few instances where specific characters are immortal, the game will bend to your actions in incredible ways. It's full of instances where you go "Oh yeah? Well what if I kill this character or try to escape here or do this? Will you cope with me, game? Will ya? HUH? ANSWER ME!!" And yes, the game responds and situations change and future events are accomodated according to what you do. And the RPG elements are a bit deeper too than DX:HR.

Before I buy a game I usually look around the net for some information. I like to youtube some gameplay and read up on some reviews. However, good graphics don't make the game. They are nice, however, are not 100% of the game. However, if graphics mean that much to you, youtube can be a big help and reviews often talk of graphics.

graphics are nice and can help, but as long as you can tell what you're doing graphics have served their purpose well enough if the games good but old.
no it isn't too old no need to throw out a good game or story because the graphics are a little outdated(don't have it myself but thats what I heard it has).

While I would not dismiss a game (especially a great game like Deus Ex) for having old or subpar graphics, they certainly do do more than just allow you to "tell what you're doing." Amazing graphics can draw you into the story much more than lower quality graphics. Not all games have a story, and not all necessarily want to draw you in in that way, but when they do, it can be a great asset.

Graphics don't make a game, I'd say try it for yourself. Even the snes still best most of the current games with high end graphics cause those games back in the day were challenging and still fun with replayability, kinda how indie games are getting popular now.

still playing zelda from Gameboy and Yoshi island 2 on SNES :D

CoD looks crappy every year, and people don't have problems with that....

If graphics mean everything to you, it will be as much fun as sanding your nutsack.
Deus Ex remains a very good game though, and the gameplay, at least, still holds up admirably.

Graphics aren't everything...... Kids this day -.-
The best video games in history are the older 1ns... because of the gameplay + they were way longer pff
PS: people that only care about graphics aren't gamers in my opinion

The graphics aren't what bother me about this game. I'm sure fanboys will rip me up for this, but so far (I've only completed the first two missions, I want to say) I haven't found the game all that engaging, it seems fairly slow paced, it's not as immersive as some other games I've played from the era, the UI and controls are a bit on the unintuitive side, and the whether or not you'll be detected in a given situation seems rather arbitrary and not well defined so it ends up being a learning by error process.

If some of the mechanics and controls are bothering you, installing the Shifter mod might help a bit.
Things kinda pick up a little after the MIBs raid your apartment.

Deus Ex looked bad when it came out, so yeah, get the HD mod...
Deus Ex is not a perfect game at all, it just did some things incredibly well and way ahead of its time. I recently read this article and it explains it better than I have time for: http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/08/alpha-protocol-is-the-new-deus-ex/
Honestly, it is flawed, but I love it, just like Prototype 1&2, the skate series, and many other games!

The first game, not the second one. I am thinking of buying it. However, if the graphics are too crappy I don't think I will be able to get into it. Supposedly, it's one of the best games ever. Thoughts?
EDIT (2/25) - I bought it. I shall see if it lives up to the hype.
