No surprise to most of us, I think.
Are the new gifting restrictions affect whether or not you will participate in the summer sale?

Not being able to add a gift to inventory will definitely affect my buying!

well I guess many people here think that way, but compared to the steam user base we are only a very small percentage and at the end of the day this summer sale will again be more profitable than the last on for valve.

Yep. I won't be buying gift copies for giveaways from the Steam store this time around.
(I'll keep an eye out on other stores instead though, if they have similar sales going on).

Is there any certainty about that...? On the SIH site they state as a fact that you can't be banned for using it, and scouring the 1 star reviews for the chrome extension I can't find a single person who believes/claims they were...

Well, I've used it to list over a thousand cards on the market, no problems here!

well, i stopped using sih after this thread 😊 is this extension safe? probably yes. Can someone get ban for using bots on community market? probably yes, i'm sure this is against steam tos (maybe i'm wrong)

As usual, people don't like to reveal full story and what they did after they're getting banned. Just like cheaters that complain they just used skin changer or bullshit like that.

Next thing will be an annual account fee, of course.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not annual, it has to be monthly so they get more money. Special yearly deal -10%!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, they'll start with annual fees, that's more sneaky, people won't complain so much if it's only $20 a year... then they'll indroduce premium memberships (which will be needed in case you want to raise your Steam level above lvl 20 and if you want to use the community market ... and if you want to play vac enabled online games ... and so forth...) which will require a monthly subscription on top of that.

nah, itll be like amazon prime. Only accounts with a premium membership can purchase new releases within a certain time period lol

There already is to use the market.

You need to spent $5 every year or you can not use the "free community market" feature. Seriously.

Comment has been collapsed.

wow, a lot of good ideas! forwarded to my friend gaben.

ok, seriously, I am sure Valve also considers this already... lets hope they will not do so in the near future!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, not every year - currently, it's $5 indefinitely. And you can decide on what to spend those $5. Definitely much too customer friendly. So, in future, community market access will be a part of a monthly $5 premium plan which also gets you some very exclusive game demos to help you with your next purchase decision - yes, you heard right $5 worth of demos and they will decide which ones you get, now isn't that a great deal?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is every year. Period.

You must have a valid Steam purchase that is between 30 days and a year old is what it says when trying to sell something on the market when you haven't put money into steam for a year.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1047-EDFM-2932

Under the section "No Purchase Older Than 30 Days"

Your account must have a successful purchase older than 30 days, but not older than a year in order to access the Community Market. The purchase of wallet funds, games, DLCs and software meet this requirement. Activating a Steam Wallet Code or Gift Card on your account to add funds to your Steam Wallet also meet this requirement. Retail CD key activation and gift purchases do not satisfy this requirement.

So if your last purchase is more than a year old then you are blocked from the market. $5 must be added to steam wallet or a $5 dollar purchase be made every year in order to use the market.

The only stuff I want is too new to be cheap(Prey, Ghost Recon), or just doesn't get good discounts(Doom, Hitman, Borderlands Pre-sequel season pass)

The new gifting restrictions will only affect my purchases if the Hitman Complete edition is price glitched cheaper than the Upgrade pack. I'd have to hope that refunding episode 1 would be immediate, so I could buy the Complete pack in time, thanks to not being able to store it in my inventory. But, not much chance of such a price glitch happening, especially considering Hitman still hasn't had any better than 50% off.

I've seen DOOM below 20$ a bunch of times in the past 6 months. Typically a 60% or greater discount whenever I see it on sale. I wouldn't be surprised if it's 15$ on the steam sale.

Directly on Steam, it has only been 66% off once, in November I think, and after that only 50% off in the winter sale.

edit: My mistake, it was also 67% off in winter sale, it was a sale this March that was only 50% off

Is There Any Deal only shows legit resellers, it's let me know of a number of deals that were better than what I've seen on Steam sales. If you want to check it out.

Yeah, I had considered getting Doom from some site for about $17 Canadian(which turned out to be a price error that was corrected), but it was an EU site, and some people were getting their orders flagged for trying to buy from NA, so I didn't bother trying. Unfortunately, most of the deals, when changed to my currency, don't turn out to be so great. I'll probably just wait for a 75% off sale on Steam, so it only costs me $20

Sounds like it's only 11-15 hours long, so, I wouldn't pay $40 for it. I'd pay $20(75% off), only because I really want it. Won't even touch the multiplayer part or the snap thing.

You might want to check some local stores for Doom. I was able to pick it up for 10€ recently. Prices may vary depending were you live.

Doom is half the price at retail stores, compared to Steam, but, since that price drop, they haven't had any sales for it, yet. Unfortunately, there are only 2 retail places for me to check, and EB Games hasn't even had the game in stock in the half a year I've been checking.

I don't mean to be a scab but steam sales are the ONLY time of the year I'm okay with blowing a bunch of money on games for myself. I'm already squirreling money away. I'll buy a few things for close friends, maybe, but I never used inventory gifting before and it being gone doesn't effect me much.

I haven't checked your region so this may be completely inaccurate, but often the other stores beat steam sale prices for North America anyway. (or at LEAST match them)

I won't buy anything I can find at other stores. Humble often has better discounts and Wingamestore still have flash sales.
I will not add funds to my wallet as long as I can sell cards. I'm sure they'll make changes regarding those in the future.

Edit: I have enough games for myself, I'm talking about giveaway stuff and secret Santas.

The other option is that Valve could blame any poor sales on key resellers and decide to bring in new restrictions on keys. But I was trying to look on the bright side!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unlikely.
When flash went away people said "You now get the best price all the time"
But somehow I don't think 33% off is best compared to 80%. I'm strange that way.

More likely the see yet another reason to keep prices up, since hey, people can't buy from a reseller anymore, Valve's promise!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Growing numbers of resellers hoarding games during sales and devaluing titles was supposedly one of the reasons that publisher weren't discounting as deep as they used to. It would be strange if less resellers was also a reason for publishers not to discount as deep. But for all I know you could be right - the Steam store often seems to abandon logic.

Lack of competition means you can just keep prices up... if they can't go anywhere else, why bother offering competitive prices?

It's Valve's own policy after all.

Also they start at identical dates every year, with a minimum deviation - something that makes this "leaked" part even funnier.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe they don't want to feel obligated to do the sale on that specific date, since there is no official announcement they can do it whenever they want.

Also imagine there is a huge sale announcement on the storefront, it will be like a warning telling "Do not buy anything yet, wait xx days till the summer sale!"

Even with the recurring nature of the sale dates and the leaks, what percent of their whole userbase actually knows the exact date? Like 10%, less?

Permalink

Also imagine there is a huge sale announcement on the storefront, it will be like a warning telling "Do not buy anything yet, wait xx days till the summer sale!"

But if people buy something and it goes on sale a few days later than can just refund it, making more work for Valve.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

an automated refund system is not that much of work..
If you've played the game more than 2 hours you can't ask for a refund.
I assume not 100% of users ask for a refund.
If you are gonna sell it, better sell it now than later. No reason to delay your sale with some announcement. Who knows, you might even lose the customer in the meanwhile.

Permalink

"since there is no official announcement they can do it whenever they want."

well, they need to inform all the publishers about it... Steam does not decide the discounts so they cannot do whatever they want, on this. For all the rest, yes
