I'm giving away a copy of Sunless Sea!

I really love this game and I think the devs are pretty cool people, so I want this game to go to someone who will appreciate it and (hopefully) spread some positive feedback to others.

Obviously there is no way to guarantee that will happen, so the next best option I've thought of is this: to do a whitelist giveaway. In order to get on the whitelist, all you have to do is tell me the following:

  • What makes this game interesting to you?
  • Did you play the free weekend and if so, what did you think of it?
  • What will you name your first captain?

At the very least it will stop bots from entering and maybe we'll get some good discussion about the game too.

Since the giveaway finishes on the 19th of February and I have a full-time job, I'll add people who comment up until 21:00 GMT on the 17th of February. Just to give myself enough time in case real life gets busy. If I've time I'll add anyone who comments afterwards but I guess it depends on how busy the thread gets.

Cast off into the Neath!

  1. It's a story rich Lovecraftian game set in the ocean. Haven't played anything like that before, interested in seeing what it's like.
  2. No, I didn't. I didn't have the time to play it, as I had schoolwork and other plans :/ Character animations don't make themselves!
  3. I will name him after the person I hate the most, as he'll most likely be the one to die.

No, not after someone you hate! You need to love your captains. After all, their lives are short.

Well, I'm a fan of rogue-likes in overall. Plus I like the art-style of the game (a bit similar to Don't Starve) and overall atmosphere (Lovecraft, King...). I tried it during free weekend, played around 15 hours.Though the game seemed a bit slow, I loved it! Got 10+ admiralty favours and 5 antiquarian favours. Discovered some interesting places (25% of the map, I think), put one spy in Khan's Heart, got all officer slots filled, helped pirate-mafia 5+ times, spread medusa-like creatures, etc, etc... What is interesting I died only once in the first hour of the game, when I intentionally was trying and clicking everything. The rest of my game time was played as second captain. Unfortunately, I don't remember how did I name first or second one. Probably, Crystal? Oh, I remembered - one of them was named Zee Captain.

Thank you for zee initiative :)

Had it on my wishlist from all the good press, so yeah, I did try it out on the free weekend, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Got the same sort of fun vibe from it as I did with Don't Starve a couple months (year?) ago when THAT was free weekend. Sad to see them both go.
As for my first captain's name, I'm usually dying too much to pay attention, but my go-to name in such situations is "Winter" (so Captain Winter) :D.

You can also choose to be called Lord/Lady/Citizen, if you want. 'Citizen Winter' has a nice ring to it.

Id really appreciate a chance!

Its been on my wishlist a while and I did play the free weekend! 20hours :o

I really like the gloomy atmosphere, discovering all the unique islands and people, and trying different options to work through their stories. Just wandering about the Zee in my crappy little boat, listening to the water, was nice even.

I named all my captains Zeewater, which is just a play on my steam name (Seawater)

WOW! I'm glad you posted this discussion thread about this game! I watched the preview video and was mesmerized by the gorgeous gameplay and the intricate artwork style! I do really like strategy games and exploring... and this game seems to have a really nice story-line also. I've had it on my wishlist since December 5th when someone else had explained how awesome it is... I remember again being so taken by the video preview. If you chose to add me to the whitelist then I will definitely download and play immediately. Not a game for backlog.

I love exploration games. I really like this games art style and just the availability of being able to do what you want. I played a little bit on the free weekend and I really liked what little I experienced of it. I did die pretty early because I was just exploring and not really trying to do missions or make money. I think my next captain will be named Bond, Captain Bond.

Thanks for the chance!

I'm interested in the stroy part for one, but the graphics look pretty cool as well. From what I read, it seems a bit like "Die Fugger II" (pretty old game I used to be a little bit addicted to, precursor to the Guild games, I think - going through the story, building your empire,or fail miserably ^^), but with more player action, fights and world exploration and so on. I've had it wishlisted for quite a while and wanted to try it out during the free weekend, but work got in the way. Also, my screen is a bit too small and you can't change the resolution of the game (I think?), so the bottom line was cut-off for me and it wasn't much fun (some menu items, no idea what they were for since I couldn't read the descriptions). BUT this was on my laptop, I also have an older PC with a bigger screen. Since the game isn't that large, file-size-wise,, it would probably work on there as well if/when I try again :)
I didn't realize we could name the captains, so ... Aloysius? Maybe? I don't know yet.

Yeah, I've heard several people had issues with resolution/text size but you might get help on the Steam forums. You can transfer your save to your PC, by the way. It doesn't support cloud saving just yet.

    • It's simply a unique premise. Very interesting.
  2. Did you play the free weekend and if so, what did you think of it?
    • I did not. I have very (VERY) limited internet. I have a hard time downloading all the games I actually own. Free Weekends and such are simply something I need to pass up :(
  3. What will you name your first captain?

Seems like a great survival game similar to Don't Starve, which I loved. The previews say the atmosphere/story driven content is really good and that is something that will hopefully add to the helplessness feeling I'll get playing it :)

Both exploration and story parts look interesting to me. Particularly, that choose-your-own-adventure part where you talk to the characters and do some form of quests.

Yes, I did play it during free weekend. That's where my previous points are coming from. Unfortunately, I did have a lot of gaming time during free weekend, so my hours with the game are low. So, what do I think about it? Absolutely glorious writing and general esthetic of dark victoriana style. Unfortunately, font size seem small to me. All the little time I had with the game I spend leaning towards my monitor.

I did not know that you could name your captain. I thought you could only pick a portrait and that's it! Obviously, I was wrong. Doh! Well, since you are asking. I would name my first captain Wanderer! Because that's he's gonna do if I win the game - wandering about!

You can name your ship too! I didn't know that until I saw it on Reddit.

I've noticed a few threads about text size on the Steam hub. You might find an answer on there. There is so much reading that you really need to be comfortable.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I did google that question during free weekend, and it seems that it's the engine side "issue" that is somehow tied to the Unity engine the game is built on. Apparently the developers are aware of it, and possible solution might come with the Zubmariner DLC. So I'm assuming that there's not much that I can do, apart from playing in a lower resolution to artificially increase the font size. But frankly it's not that visible and intrusive, it's just like you said - there's a lot of reading and after some time you just start noticing it.

This game has been on my wishlist for quite some time and I loved the free weekend. To answer your questions

1) The game was a lot of fun. It felt like a dark gothic and victorian take on FTL. I loved the rogue-lite aspects of it and the humor is the dialogues was quite amusing.

2) Of course I did. Though I sadly managed to clock only 14 hours in the weekend. And I loved it! Definitely deserves the wishlist and definitely going to buy it at some point (after I get my salary and anything survives my girlfriends spending)

3) Andrew of course. Always name all my characters in every game as Andrew. Maybe I'll name my second character Andrew Rayleigh ... Hmm ...

I've just checked and I wish listed this game back in August, which was when I came back to using Steam in anger after building myself a gaming PC. What must have attracted it to me back then was the lack of emphasis on combat and emphasis on exploration, survival & story telling.

As you know I did play in the Sunless Sea FREE Steam Weekend 28th to 31st Jan and enjoyed it immensely. What I did like about it was

  • The atmosphere. Great graphics and music with the lights down low made for a wonderful , immersive experience
  • The story telling which did have a bizarre, unsettling effect on me.
  • The relatively simple game mechanics

Inevitably, like any game, it was less than perfect. The few criticisms I had were

  • The interface was not very intuitive and I'd have much preferred the world rather than the ship to rotate so I didn't have to keep reversing the controls
  • I'd have liked some in game method of tracking what goods were sold at which ports and the prices rather rely on me keeping a spreadsheet (which I didn't bother with for just a weekends playing) - Having a young family I don't do the pen and pencil thing as both would just go walkabouts ;)
  • I'd have liked it to be a little less involved in that I found I needed a minimum of an hour for any session and as I said above I have a young family so an uninterrupted hour is a rare thing ..
  • I'd have preferred it to have been a little easier - My fortune never went above $150 despite over 8 hours playing it. But this may be because it was all in short bursts and I found it difficult to keep track of trade routes.

My first Captain was inevitably called Shandy and I insisted on him being referred to as Captain! I think my next Captain may be named Salty Dog ..

I actually wish I'd bought the game when it was on offer over the weekend but I was too indecisive :( I'd love the chance to win it but if not it still remains high on my wishlist and I be looking out for it on offer again or maybe treat myself to it for my birthday ;) BTW, thanks for your comments on my thread as with many of the comments I enjoyed reading them all :)

A tracker option or even a note facility in the journal is something I would love. It you go away from the game for any period of time at all it's so hard to remember what you're supposed to be doing.

I enjoyed reading your thread. It helped push me into buying a copy for giveaway.

To be fair, there isn't that much to explore overzee in FL, and a lot of the places available are something you'll visit once or twice (barring cases where you'd want to grind something) and forget about them completely - my yacht has been gathering dust for a long, long time...

And speaking of FL, feel free to contact me if you'd need anything that requires calling upon another player (the username is the same as the one I gave for my first captain).

It's looked interesting to me since I first saw it. I love that it's an exploration game, but story-based. From what some of the reviews say, the more you explore, the more different stories you uncover. The whole reason I play games is for the story, so...

I didn't get a chance to play the free weekend.

Knowing me, my first captain will probably be called Beefheart.

This has been on my wishlist since it was early access; I ran across an article about it somewhere, and watched an interview with the devs. I love the setting, though I had not been familiar with it before, and of course who doesn't have a soft spot for steampunk these days. It's been a little expensive - not more than it deserves to be, but with my backlog I play a long game and wait til things come down in price; so I've watched it from afar, including a couple of Twitch streams I guess probably about the time it was added to GOG.

I didn't play the free weekend because I was pretty busy, and also because I don't need to preview it to know I'm going to like it. And my first Captain, well, that's a motion of the moment, so I don't know. But I'm thinking Captain Splotch might not be a bad way to go.

I thought it was a little pricey too (PC gaming has obviously ruined my idea of price points) but given how much I've played it, it has been a worthwhile investment for me!

Right? I respect the devs for holding the line on their price (though surely at some point it will come down). As it is, I have such a giant pile of games yet to play that I'm comfortable waiting them out. If I had fewer games, I'm sure I'd have bought it by now.

I'm interested in this game because of well... london, mysteries and ships ..

I did play the free weekend. I had heard very good things about it, but I was a bit afraid it would be too reading-heavy (I enjoy reading, only not on my screen, and I have been spoiled by too many adventure and rpg writers with novelist delusions). Thankfully, my worries were lifted: for one, the writing is good, and also it's delivered in a smart way, mostly in short bursts, rather than pages and pages. So yeah, the game made a quick entrance in my wishlist.

now, for the name of my first captain.. fco is my default. but if I win, I'll name it after you ;)

I liked it since I first saw it. Like about everything, from the idea, to the style.
Of course I tried it, for it is in my wishlist =P Unluckily, not as much as I would had, cause I had an exam the following day.
I found it a lot more complex than I thought. Many stories/things to discover, I didn't even had time to check everything. (discovered one can change its ship only at the end of my playthrough). First runs were more of the "let's try it" type but later I changed to "what does this thing do? let's find it out!). The only thing that I didn't like much was how slow the ship moved; I know it fits the pace of the game but I had limited time! GIMME MORE SPEED!!! XD
But I enjoyed my time nonetheless :)

My first captain, 99% called him Dave Dee, because my name's Davide =P (I named many of them but I don't remember every name) :\

One thing that draws me to the game is the writing. I heard the game has excellent writing, worldbuilding, etc, and from what I saw of it, it was indeed intriguing. It seems to fall kind of in that "rougelike" territory that a lot of games are exploring, which isn't a huge draw for me, but it looks like once you get used to the game and know what you're doing the challenges can be managed well.

I did play during the free weekend, but not for two long. Less than an hour, as I just wanted to get kind of a "demo" of the game since I planned on getting it at some point anyway. I thought it had a great atmosphere and was also a little weird but strangely fun once I got used to the controls. The sense of exploration and discovery was good too.

I named my captain Ria. Just made up a name and went with it.

It's definitely easier to manage once you get to know the ropes. I died a tonne of times in my first 15 hours or so, but then had once captain for 40 hours (and retired successfully) and I'm about 20 hours into the next captain.
