I'm giving away a copy of Sunless Sea!

I really love this game and I think the devs are pretty cool people, so I want this game to go to someone who will appreciate it and (hopefully) spread some positive feedback to others.

Obviously there is no way to guarantee that will happen, so the next best option I've thought of is this: to do a whitelist giveaway. In order to get on the whitelist, all you have to do is tell me the following:

  • What makes this game interesting to you?
  • Did you play the free weekend and if so, what did you think of it?
  • What will you name your first captain?

At the very least it will stop bots from entering and maybe we'll get some good discussion about the game too.

Since the giveaway finishes on the 19th of February and I have a full-time job, I'll add people who comment up until 21:00 GMT on the 17th of February. Just to give myself enough time in case real life gets busy. If I've time I'll add anyone who comments afterwards but I guess it depends on how busy the thread gets.

Cast off into the Neath!

Well, this has been a wishlist game for me since Christmas. I almost bought it then but wasn't sure how much I'd actually play it -- I'm very particular, I like atmosphere but not horror, and I like complexity like this but get frustrated too easily...

The free weekend was great, but I was extremely, otherworldly, busy. I ended up playing for 1 hour instead of sleeping and if I wasn't sold before, I am now! Like 'I'm in the middle of the sea, nothing happens here, what do I-- oh sh#¤%! Okay, I'll just try again.'. (Also, I'm dirty about the chivs lowering my CR so now I'll have to buy the game!) Def my kind of game. :D Especially with the past shrouded in mystery option. ;) So my Captain will be Captain. No one knows where he comes from, who he is or where he is going...

But everybody knows he'll most likely die on the Zee.

With the Past Shrouded in Mystery he (or she) probably will die! It's a cool option (and you can get a legacy item that way), but you miss out on a boost to your stats which is really helpful for early players. I do hope to do it one of these times myself.

Definitely a very awesome game and a generous giveaway!
I agree, these devs put a lot of love into their game and it shows.

Not entering, as I own the game, so consider this a bump and shameless endorsement for the game. :)

Happy New Year! It came around really fast. I lived with a guy from Shanghai a few years ago and we had dragon eye soup and exchanged gifts wrapped in red paper. It was really nice! Since then I try to mark the day in some way. There is usually a festival in the city but the weather has been really bad lately so I don't think I'll get in.

You might be interested to know that they're working on an expansion with submarines so it'll be even more underwater than before!

龙眼汤,yeah was a very nice soup to drink, bringing the balance for cold and heaty body which we called yin and yang. Every dishes on that days represent something good XD

Weather this year really sucks, but it doesn't stop us human going forward (^^)v
Well, i'll look into the expansion details because the base game was very nice, my nephew will be very happy because most of the time he was playing on Steam just that he couldn't break the parent controlled games. (T_T)

I unfortunately missed out on the Free weekend.

I would name my first captain Llama (just cause)

Captain Llama has a nice ring to it. I like it!

I enjoy the stories of Fallen London but the format of the browser game doesn't appeal to me that much so Sunless Sea is a great alternative.

1 - I wasn't sure if they were related until I've read wikipedia right now, but I remember playing the browser game Fallen London for a while, so that's what called my attention at first.

2 - I don't like playing free weekend games. There's enough games on my library begging to be played, so I use my free time trying to reduce the amount. I know it will never happen, but...

3 - Leon. Because of this movie, one of my all-time favorites: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110413/

I know the feeling. I usually only play them if they're games I think I'll buy anyway.

I like Leon too but I haven't watched it in years. The Alt-J songs Matilda and Leon keep poking at me to remind me, though.

  1. I like the gameplay of the game. There are many interesting stories in the game, a lot of stuff to read and I like that. I like to explore an unknown world and see what story every new island brings.

  2. I haven't played it now but I played it through some gog version from very first release of the game. And the game is on my wishlist for almost a year. :)

  3. It would be Captain Ckovi.

Greetings and Thanks!

The dark, rough style is quite attractive, with the in-depth resource and action management.
I tried it for like two hours, created a captain who's goal to explore a lot, and get a mansion and stuff to retire :)
It was fine, but I couldn't really get myself to play more than 1-2 hours, I really wanted to finish HL2. Feels like one needs to spend the first hours and/or runs failing to learn how to play the game - I couldn't manage my ship well and crashed into a crab? seriously damaging the ship and getting two crew members killed.
I didn't expect a heavily randomized RPG-ish game, I thought it's more like an atmospheric, but simpler roguelike. I'm not disappointed, but it was way more indepth to play while I had another game hangin'. But it was a really pleasant expeirence. The fortune favours the daring, but careful explorer.

Daring but careful is right. Too cautious and you'll never earn enough money to cover your costs. Too daring and you'll die on the water miles from land.

That should answer 1 and 2.

1) in a nutshell, I like the idea, the exploration, adventure, not quite knowing what the hell is going on, etc. I got a real FTL vibe off of it, and that's one of my most-played games.
2) I played about 5 minutes, nearly got hooked, but realized that I'd never get enough time in during the free weekend, would be frustrated when the free weekend ended my playing prematurely, and I might not pick it up in the future
3) Seadog, for 3 reasons:

  • I love dogs
  • it's a literal translation of the dutch word for seal, and seriously, who doesn't like seals?
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jU5ZpsqSmM (this would also make a great song to have in the background while playing)

Seadog, I like it!
Also, you can turn perma-death off if it ends up becoming an issue. When you have a run of 40+ hours the idea of losing it all for one mistake is horrendous.

perma-death doesn't bother me. I grew up with it.

I played a little during the free weekend to see if I liked it, I did. Great writing and atmosphere was what did it for me, plus I love anything naval. Bertram Sodsall was my captain's name, last death was at the hands of three giant metal crabs after multiple engine fires in succession decimated the crew and slowed the ship to a crawl.
I have a feeling the game gets very grindy, but tbh I don't mind that and expected it. I was getting a bit confused about all the stats and things you acquire though. Every conversation or action ends with a load of +/- to x, y, z, and all other sorts of things. I guess you learn some of it over time, but a lot seems to be "choose your own adventure" style.

I didn't find it too grindy, to be honest. At some stages I didn't know what to do next, but I never felt that I was doing pointless tasks.

  1. The setting + resource management + style (more focus on reading and decision making, as well as RNG-based choices)
  2. Yes, I played about 2 hours and I thought it was pretty great. I don't think it's anywhere near enough to get a good grasp on it as it felt I barely did anything, but I did get an idea about how the game works. The main thing that caught my attention is the atmosphere. It felt creepy to sail just about anywhere in that default, seemingly defenseless ship (even though I did survive several combat encounters).
  3. Well, assuming I can just continue the playthrough I started in the free weekend, the name's already been chosen: Greed. I have a tendency of naming my characters after the seven deadly sins, and it was the obvious choice for a captain aiming for wealth :P
Bonus fact: Your giveaway ends exactly one year after I added the game on my wishlist ;p

It could be destiny!

The first ship is pretty awful. Slow, small cargo hold, weak. But it does get better.

Comment has been collapsed.

Figured as much. Would be awkward to start with the best ship after all :P Though that downgraded ship that you could buy did make me wonder why someone would go for it. I think it could hold like, 5 cargo (?) or something like that, no weapons and so on.

I like ship games in general and the theme to this is different and interesting.

I didn't get to play much of it on the weekend due to time constraints. There was more text than I anticipated but what I did play I liked. Seemed promising but I didn't want to rush anything either.

I avoid free weekends in general so I didn't play it, and something about the trailer has kept it off my wishlist, but reading the thread where you all were talking about the free weekend made me take a second look and now I'm very interested. I like the atmosphere and the sense of an expansive lore behind it, and the pace and tone of dangerous exploration suits my style. As far as captain's name, Is there a random name feature? If not, it will probably be Liam Xavier Perrin, my nom de plume. Thanks for you consideration Snugglor!

I don't remember if there's a random name feature, tbh. Your name is good, though.

The lore is the strongest point. Fallen London (the browser game) is the origin of the setting and it has plenty of great stories.

I love playing darkest dungeon and FTL so this game intrigued me a lot that during the free weekend, i spent 12hrs just on the game in 2 days. Initially, I thought it was going to be an easy with lot of quests exploration game but after playing a few times, I realised it was very difficult with lot of stories quest to play through. The only downside of this game is that I tried to do too much too early. Being a RPG player with a left no stone unturned, left no fog of war unexplored mentality, I tried to explore half the map during my last game and died trying, not because of lack of resources but due to the fear element which is pretty unique in exploration and survival game. I like how the game need us to balance between carrying resources needed for survival and spaces for goods to trade and quest. One of my death was due to the overstocking of goods to trade that I had insufficient supplies and money to survive out in the sea. Overall the game requires a lot of knowledge of the game and many play through to get used to to survive the sea and succeed in completing the main quest. The name of the captain is Azsassinz like always for most of my character creation in games.

The balance between trade goods and supplies is tricky and definitely one of the challenges. Depending on your map, though, you can be lucky and find some decent trade routes to buy/sell goods and restock on fuel and supplies.

Hey!

Fan of FTL here, roguelikes, plain old dnd and cthulhu-like settings, so i immediately fell in love with the narration and the overall atmosphere in this one. Atmosphere, choices and narration some times are more than enough to make an interesting game, so the graphics aren't even important in such cases. I love the so called curve of "learning through mistakes" (permadeath), patience and perseverance so this game is a must for me, as well as darkest dungeon. Wishlisted ofc since the day I found out about it. I tried it some time ago with a friend, however didn't find the time to play it on this weekend. -First Captain : Ceastor (from an old dnd session)-

This is a hard game people however, I believe casual gamers should probably steer away from it. Requires many hours of reading.

It definitely requires dedication to play. There's no such thing as getting half an hour in here and there, you really need to sit with it.

I never even considered the graphics, tbh. That aspect doesn't really concern me. I guess that means that to me the graphics are perfectly suited to their purpose.

The game looks pretty interesting, it's on my wishlist for quite a long time, you can check it yourself :) I gave it a try during free weekend and it sucked me from the very beginning. My first run lasted about 4 hours straight. Unfortunately I didn't have time to play it much more only about 2 hours next day? My first captain "my Lord" was named James Hunt and it was inspired by one of the characters from my unfinished book :P He eventually died because I wanted to see is if it was the end of the map. Nope. It "teleported" me somewhere and I wasn't prepared for that: lost most (if not everything) of my supplies and BAM! First achievement unlocked - Terror 90 :D At least it wasn't death :P But it didn't took me too long to finally die of course cos I was outta money and there wasn't a place to buy supplies anyway so... You know what we've eaten :P My next captain was named... well, IS named (because he's still alive) Nathaniel Borrows and he awaits for my commands, so please let me help him :D

I sailed off the map once too. Needless to say I haven't done it since! There is a secret ambition that requires you to sail off the map in each cardinal direction. I'm pretty terrified of it!
