Hello. I asked this on ebay too, but since there were 2 different answers, I'll ask here too.

What can I do if I buy a steam key/gift on ebay and then it gets revoked? While this hasn't happened to me yet, I'm quite afraid because I'm thinking of buying a steam key from a person with almost zero feedback. I can record the whole process of me activating the steam key, but what if it gets revoked? Am I still covered by ebay money back guarantee? I just want to be sure that I'm safe!

The answers were:
1) No, you will not be covered. Digital items like that aren't even supposed to be sold on the main site, only in classifieds.
2) Actually you WOULD be covered by the MBG. The seller has it listed in the wrong category as a tangible good from the sounds of it therefore you would be covered for both INR and SNAD. If it was SNAD, you would win and you would prove delivery back to the seller by printing out what you received from the seller and sticking it in a little padded mailer & shipping it to the seller with tracking.
However, something like this really shouldn't be bought on ebay. Not only will the seller probably be kicked off soon but those accounts can be shut down months later and you'll have no recourse after 180 days (paypal's policy).

Does anyone know if I'll be covered by the ebay money back guarantee? Thanks in advance for your answers.

if i had to guess (certainly don't know).. i'd say both of those answers are correct.. it would likely just fall on the paypal support member who replies, at which point some would say it's not covered, and others would file it under a certain category it does semi fit and cover it.

basically my guess is, what size straw do you draw? did ya get the short straw or long one? ^^

It's just that ebay says I'm covered by ebay money back guarantee, but, thing is, ebay doesn't allow the selling of digital items. So, while I would be covered if it was a physical item, we're talking about a digital item, something that is against the rules of ebay. But, what if the fact that it's against the rules, allows me to be covered by ebay money back guarantee?

i think that's why you'll get conflicting answers even from their own support team. since it's not even supposed to be a listed item in the first place.

So, I should just wait for a trustworthy seller? But the trustworthy sellers usually sell games for bigger prices. xD

So? :/ I don't have that much money on ebay, so I was hoping to find a trustworthy seller that had an average price for this game - or at least that he/she is accepting offers.

Ebay says... but Isn't Ebay that place that also has steam account listings?

Permalink

Yep. But that's also against the rules (of steam and ebay).

Comment has been collapsed.

That's my point, they say aren't allowing such stuff yet these listings keep coming (people selling roms too), when they could easilly monitor it or even filter things like steam account in the first place.
Also with steam keys and any other potential scams, if the scammers wouldn't make any money out of it anymore (because Ebay would refund everyone, ban the scammers etc) then those scams wouldn't show up anymore, but they still do.

But these things happen on G2A and Kinguin too, even though they enforce many rules to the potential sellers. They ask for a lot of private information, you have to wait a lot of days till you are able to take the money you got from the games you sold, they ask for proof of purchase, etc.

But they work differently, they are build on selling digital items and Ebay claims they aren't even allowing it (where they are lying).
I never bought from those 2, and probably never will, you don't have enough money or want a deal, but personally i wouldnt even risk going for such deals when it means i could risk losing all my money, i rather pay that little extra for a better guarantee.

And one of the two you also have to pay extra for that guard thing and protection, people still get scammed there too, it takes one person to steal some credit card info, that might take over a month to be checked and cleared and keys revoked, and then that person already has his money and ran away with it

In the end that's the decision you got to make for yourself, i just wouldn't trust on either what Ebay says, and it's probably a gamble you get your money back or not and a gamble with the seller.

"ebay doesn't allow the selling of digital items"

That's incorrect, they do in fact allow the selling of digital goods (though they have some weird policies): http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/downloadable.html

it can matter a lot.. for example in this instance if it's under $30, it's likely going to have issues later (or immediately).

What? xD In most sites, it's under 20 dollars. xD But, on ebay, it costs more than 20 dollars. :/

Yeah, but I'm talking about trustworthy sellers (on G2A and Kinguin), who wouldn't want to tarnish their reputation.

That means some store clerks or someone along the distribution chain copied down the code from some disks and sell it. The people who'll buy the disk will bring it back and complain and get new copies, so nobody will be the wiser. We used to buy legit game keys for dirt cheap like that in the late 90s, including Windows keys, when perpetual internet connection wasn't required to just start a software.

We can't be sure about that, but yeah, maybe it's true. Haven't heard anything yet about a mass revoking. :P

Keys like that, which come from disk copies, are rarely ever revoked. Partly because some actual legit stores sell codes like that from physically injured packages/disks, where the code is still usable. GamesRepublic is probably one of those that did this. Or something with a similar name. I bought a few codes like this from authorised stores, where it was sent in the form of a photograph.

Others have replied already, but it matters because when you consider taking a risk you should always weigh the associated reward. Also, I'd say G2A and Kinguin are safer than a random eBay seller.

Understood. There are safer looking options on eBay, too, but obviously they're more expensive. I'm sure you're aware of the fact, but I feel like I should point out that reviews for the game are terrible.

Fair enough. :) There's not really much driving in Full Throttle, it's a point and click adventure game. The driving portions are actually minigame fights.

The game seems to be not that great anyhow.I am pretty sure not long from now it will be bundled. It is over priced and it is not very good and if you ask me that money could be spent on better things but it still up to you.

If you want it that bad you better of with G2A at least you can get some protection.Ebay may or may not cover you if this go wrong due to it being an item that is not allowed to be sold.A key is hard to prove if it was valid or not.Though from my my experience Ebay tends to take the buyers said though that is if you follow all the rules.

They could tell both parties your SOL since it violates the rules.

To be honest, I can't answer your question. But I personally would be carefull, when buying games cheap on eBay.
It is one thing, if a games was bundled before. In this case the seller COULD have get it from a bundle and resells it.
But if you buy a game that was not bundled before, I would wonder, WHY the person can sell it at this price...
And especially be carefull if it is a new seller without many ratings.

But that's just my personal opinion

Permalink

Well, it's even cheaper on G2A and Kinguin, so he could easily buy it from one of those sites and then resell it on ebay. :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I see.
Well, I got tricked once on G2A. Lost my money and my game, so I personally would not buy there again.

But in this case (if you really wanna buy a game from an unofficial reseller) I would buy it on kinguin instead of ebay.
The reason is, that the sellers there have good ratings (only checked the normal version of the game) and for additional $1.00 you get some kind of insurance so that you should get your money back if something goes wrong.

Or you simply wait for the next sale ;P

It depends on the seller. Some sellers may just want to scam people, some others may accidentally sell illegitimate keys, mostly because they buy games and then immediately resell them. Well, I have some money on ebay though, hence why I want to use ebay.

I see :)

Found this article about the money back guarantee:
ebay / money-back-guarantee

They say that digital goods are not covered by their guarantee. So I guess you won't get your money back if the game gets revoked.

Hope this helps :)

My experiences with eBay support haven't been great - for any given problem you seem to have a 50/50 chance of a sensible response or a response that has nothing to do with your problem and your ticket closed as resolved with no way to reopen it. If the answer to this one is unclear to us don't expect anyone from support to have a better answer, I'd say it really could go any which way.

eBay is weird. if they don't have tracking that they delivered the item, you can probably get a refund. I still don't know, though. People deliver by e-mail anyway. Maybe it's different by country, but I'm just going off what I had read a while back. I sold a copy of Link Between Worlds years ago, so maybe I don't know what is what anymore. I would assume your money spent on a digital item is at risk for loss as soon as you buy it, though.

It says digitally delivered is against policy (I mean, digital games are generally already not allowed by policy) but if someone can't prove they delivered it to your address (physically) you can just.. claim they never delivered if you want to be that person.
I think it's a coin flip if you'll get your money back. eBay is supposed to be notorious for favoring buyers, so who knows.

I bought two removed games off eBay recently, though... they were Gifts, though. So at least those are safe.

Yeah, I know, it's a risk. xD Some will get delivered, some others won't. So far, all the games I bought on ebay were legit.

Answer 1 is correct. Digitial items are not allowed on Ebay outside of classified where there is no buyer/seller protections provided.

You are SOL.

But... if they are selling it in the main area, and there is a problem. You will win a paypal fund reversal because they have no post tracking number.

Source: Filed a claim myself and got my money back from some asshat who I thought was selling me a PS3 disc and gave me his PSN username and password instead.

But doesn't that mean that it's the seller's fault that he made a listing against the rules, so I should be able to get my money back (only if something would happen, of course)?

Generally speaking of there is some kind of problem and there is no tracking number, Ebay will always rule in the buyers favor. If ther is a problem and a tracking number showing delivery, they most often side with sellers.

Anyway, don't buy game keys on Ebay.
