Mercer's 'Getting Drunk' Tips:

Beers and ciders are perfectly nice and refreshing, but in terms of value vs pissed-upness they're not worth it. You will pay approximately 3-4X what it costs to get yourself drunk on red wine.

Some might argue spirits are the way to go, but the problem I have with spirits is I consume them so quickly that before I know it, I'm that drunk that my inhibitions are skewed enough that I continue drinking - again depreciating the booze value ratio.

While red wine is, I find, the most enjoyable way to get yourself wankered on a budget (with knowing what wine to buy caveats to be amended now...), I find it's better paying the little bit extra for a cheap red vermouth. This stuff will get you really quite fucked up and it is not too expensive. What is more, in terms of getting drunk on a budget, a bottle of the cheapest vermouth will taste infinitely better than a bottle of the cheapest red wine, especially if you're inexperienced at purchasing cheap, decent wine.
