Curious what PC games out there are both worth playing and feel like an early zelda game... while I can (and have) looked up Zelda games on google that doesn't always give you a feel for whether it's good or not.

We all probably have our own favorite zelda games. I've never owned a handheld system in my life so my personal favorites are all on consoles: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link on NES, A Link to the Past on SNES, Ocarina of Time on N64, and Wind Waker on Gamecube. Skyword Sword was fun, but I got annoyed with being forced to use a wiimote (I understand that there are ways to avoid this now but at the time 100% controller wasn't an option). And I got away from consoles entirely before the switch so no BotW for me and I understand it is very different from older zelda games anyway.

So what PC games have you played that remind you of Zelda (you know... besides loading the real deal up in an emu)? I kick things off with the ones I've played:

  • Evoland 1 and 2 - I remember not liking the first game very much but absolutely loving the second game. The second game reminded me of OOT meets ALTTP.

  • Oceanhorn - somewhat like Wind Waker. It's probably the most obvious 3D Zelda clone that I am aware of. I only played the first island and need to go back and finish it but from what I remember it was pretty solid.

  • Hack n Slash - I wouldn't recommend this for non-programmers. Even among programmers, I'd probably limit that recommendation to memory hacking enthusiasts. The early game has a very fun zelda-like roaming the world and solving puzzles feel that you don't need to be a programmer to appreciate. But the late game stuff will honestly probably remind you more of memory hacking / trying to browse some undocumented spaghetti code than anything to do with a zelda game.

Recommend whatever you think fits and why but please call-out any non-zelda aspects (I'm looking at you, rogue-likes/permadeath games).

I remember at the time that the general consensus was that it was better than Twilight Princess - that even nintendo fans preferred the Wii port over the real zelda.

yeah, it is that good

I can't remember anything wrong with Twilight Princess / thought I liked it well enough at the time but the fact that I completely spaced and forgot to mention it must say something too lol. I think I Okami is getting installed as soon as I get done slacking off...er um studying.

for Binding of Isaac, it says thats a roguelike... does it also have permadeath then? There might be a couple exceptions but overall I'm not a huge fan of the roguelike genre. I'm more of a reload from last checkpoint kinda guy. :-)

It is a typical roguelike, with lots of randomization. Still a great game though, with many many elements of classic Zelda.

In fact, you unlock things to help you going through the game and your learn the pattern of monsters and bosses so you're not really starting over from scratch:) that's my favorite game (the binding of isaac rebirth + dlcs) I currently have 653 hours on it, it's a great game :) you keep progress in some ways, when you kill some bosses with one of your characters you unlock achievements in game (and on steam) which means that you also unlock items for your next runs and means that you completed something with this character :D the ultimate goal is to do everything with every characters (there are some easy, average and hard characters) also the final dlc will come this year apparently

I love Zelda-like games (exploration, puzzle solving). Somebody talked me into BoI and I truly hated it. It's nothing like Zelda AT ALL. You shoot, you die, you start all over from the beginning. On top of all that it's ugly.

Not sure why developers think these kinds of games are a good idea?

Permalink

Because there are people who actually enjoy them?
I mean, it does feel pretty good when you accomplish something without dying or when you have these lucky moments that get your heart pounding and your hands sweaty when you should've died but you somehow managed to survive. They are a challenge and can get frustrating at times but at the same time, they're quite satisfying when things go well and you happen to not want to pull your hair out because you've died for the 50th time. xD

There is the 125% door that I went through, plus the 101st ending showed only a 0.4% completion rate whenever I got it. I guess the counter jumped up to 150% after that?

there's a bunch of seemingly arbitrary things you have to do. if you're at 125% then i think you probably did most of that though.

from this guide : "Once you get 125%, go back to Pixelatto HQ, go through the previously locked door (bottom right), and view the film to get 150% and the 125% achievement."

It doesn't play like a usual Zelda game so I can see a lot of Zelda fans not being as interested in that one.

From what I've played it feels much like a 2D precursor to Dark Souls. I came across this comparison some time ago and agree with most of it.

I'll mention Dead Cells because of the 2D Dark Souls aspect, but that has permadeath so it might not be up your alley.

It actually being an old-school Zelda rehash and not much more, (sometimes that's exactly what you want) made me think of this game right away. Been keeping an eye on this for a while, and yeah.. I waited for a sale. Half price seems like the fair amount, to me.

Moonlighter. This one plays similar with A Link to the Past in SNES but with added shop keeper mechanic.

Also check out Wizard of Legend - https://store.steampowered.com/app/445980/Wizard_of_Legend/
Similar in play style and graphics but has a bit of permadeath mechanic.

But the most BotW-ish PC game I've ever played is Hob - https://store.steampowered.com/app/404680/Hob/

Firstly wanted to 1 up these recommendation:

  • Okami HD (classic 3D Zelda experience)
  • Anodyne (Link's Awakening, A Link to the Past like experience)
  • Minit (The Legend of Zelda original like experience)

And I wanted to add:

  • Beyond Good and Evil: This game plays like a classic 3D Zelda game with exploration part, side quests, getting abilities as you go through the game, dungeons, puzzle/exploration focus with simple combat. It's well loved and made by the same team that made the Rayman series. I really love the vibe of the game and I love the focus on the fact the main character is an investigative reporter with a camera.

  • Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (and the Shantae series in general): This is for a Zelda 2 like experience. Has really similar format, with town area, finding dungeons, and gaining abilities in dungeon to solve puzzles. As your abilities slowly build up you can even use them in combination in later puzzles and unlocking areas in the world.

Here's an upcoming game I'd also look out for:

  • Chicory: A Colorful Tale: I tried the demo and it felt like a very 2D Zelda like game, with it's own unique paint mechanic which i found really fun.

Also if you want to broaden your scope, there are two genres you might want to look into:

  • Metroidvania: If you like the whole combat and slowly gaining abilities aspect of Zelda. And if you like the finding secrets and exploring areas/dungeons aspect of Zelda.
  • JRPG (especially action based ones): If you like the side quest aspect of Zelda, and you like the aspect of exploring towns and interacting with NPCs. Zelda games tend to flow like JRPG games overall as well (explore towns and world, eventually find dungeon, conquer dungeon, repeat)

Hope you find some fun new games to play

edit: added Shantae

Thanks, I've got BGAE somewhere in my backlog too, guess I need to move that one up as well.

Metroidvania - I do like the aspects you described, but in my experience searching for Metroidvania has tended to yield games that are either faster paced / don't have the rpg aspect or occasionally just a straight up bullet-hell (partially this is because steam labels are not very accurate though).

JRPG - I've had a love/hate relationship with them for a long time. While I more or less like them thematically, I see a lot of common things in games labeled as JRPG that don't work for me personally. I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me and I'm probably not the ideal target for this genre... I'm not knocking anybody who likes these things but some specific things I tend to dislike in JRPGs include:

  • over-emphasis on using menus to select every single spell/attack/item/etc without providing quick-slots/hotkeys/favorites/on-screen buttons.... anything that would make selecting the actions more accessible and less of chore.
  • the massive 2-car-length distance between combatants in many JRPGs vs. in Western turn-based CRPGS (what I think of as the "run down the hall to attack and then get back in position" effect)
  • weapons that more closely resemble giant paddles than real-world swords
  • most androgynous looking wardrobe/fashion/hair-style choices that appear in (final) fantasy settings
  • airships/mechs/robots appearing in settings that still use medieval technology like swords rather than more setting-appropriate things like magic portals/flying dragons/golems/etc

... I know, I know. But the OCD is strong in this one and these things get to me.

Yeah, I totally get where you are coming from. Just thought I would mention them in case you wanted to look for more games with similar aspects to parts of a Zelda game. Some games get lumped in weird groups though, so i thought it could be helpful. For example, Shantae games are traditionally lumped into the Metroidvania category, but they really are more Zelda-style games now that i think about it. There are also JRPGs out there that are much more action oriented, so they can also come off more Zelda like (Secret of Mana series being a popular example of that).

I actually quite appreciate how unique the Zelda series is in the gaming landscape. And i love how there is lots of diversity within the Zelda franchise itself.

Actually, now that I think about it, I want to recommend one more game:

  • Wuppo: This one might be my least similar to Zelda like game, but it holds some aspects and might be worth checking out. It has a metroidvania tag, but i think the game is in a similar situation to Shantae. There's side-quests and lots of exploring outside of non-combat areas where you just talk to NPCs and figure out how to solve their problems, and then there's more combat specific section. There aren't really any puzzle items like in Zelda though, you tend to stick with the same abilities (that you can improve) through out the game. The main focus of the game is the exploration and side quest part though.

I don't have much along the lines of PC games but if you are willing to look at old consoles that you can emulate easily:

Golden Axe Warrior (Sega Master System)- this is a straight up clone of the original Zelda

Alunda (Playstation)
Crusader of Centy (Genesis)
