I don't see it, where's the giveaway?

With the last change they made to the gifting system, it's been quite a while now... but hasn't become any clearer, less convoluted or even
more sensible then before, on the contrary. Meh :/.

I'm in Canada and trying to gift some things to friends in the US for xmas, but I can't gift 90% of things. Steam is just giving its business away to Humblebundle/Fanatical/etc...

I think they made it possible to gift wallet funds directly as a sort of workaround.

Steam has had gift cards for forever. There's still no way to purchase them with wallet funds, however (which makes sense, as activating a gift card removes restrictions from an account, and thus allowing wallet transfers would only lead to abuse of that fact).

Yes, I'm aware, but I didn't say gift cards or that you could purchase them with wallet funds. I meant this new feature.

All that is is the option to buy the old gift cards, but through Steam client (bypassing your wallet and utilizing your linked payment method). They're in no way functionally different from pre-existing cards (other than, apparently, not removing limited restrictions on use), you just no longer are exclusively limited to purchasing them through paypal or physical storefronts.

Do correct me if you have information to the contrary, but I'm not finding anything myself.

As far as I know, you're correct. However, this option does have some use:

  1. It brings consistency with the existing system for gifting games. Now you can gift a game or money to someone in the same way and have it presented to them the same way.
  2. As you pointed out, this makes gift cards available in digital form for people in countries where you have no other way of purchasing one.

Thank you for the clarifications.
My responses were merely meant to indicate that wallet funds themselves could still not be gifted, which was the point I had personal interest in. I now can see how the new gift cards could be useful to others just with what they do offer, though.

They could always make it so that you can't gift "gift cards" bought with wallet to restricted accounts.

That'd require creating a separate class of gift cards, was more what I was getting at. And Valve isn't exactly known for adding convenience features (for the purpose of them being convenience features) without excessive encouragement to do so. :X
I was mistaken anyway, as these digital cards already don't unlock limited- making it a rather peculiar situation where there doesn't seem to actually be any reason not to allow them to be purchased by wallet funds.

I was thinking it could work more like when you buy a card from the marketplace, where after you craft the badge the items still have the lock, so they can already track how you got the item even if the item is the same. But as you mention it doesn't even matter as they don't unlock accounts either way

I. Just Want. To Be Able To. Once Again. Buy DLCs. For Unowned Games. For My Own Use.

Frackin Valve.

That aside, it also does rather suck being unable to gift to Europe from the States anymore.

Proper tracking of DLC and maybe a queue for DLC's for games you already own would be a neat start, but hey... let's just revamp the curator system nobody ever was interested in :).

Wow, that sounded salty ;D. Happy Holidays, hehe.

Months ago, did a number on my gifting from New Zealand as well. They did it in an attempt to kill trading, because they don't really care about gifters, they think us gifting from our cheaper regions is stealing their profit. -_-

That combined with the loss of inventory gifts meant that my birthday even this year was nothing but bundle keys. The last two years were full of cool gifts. :(

If something is worth 10% less in your region then you can't send it to another region.
