Should I buy half life, or half life source?

Nothing is better than the original. Also download Black Mesa Source, It's free, you'll only need Source SDK 2007.

Just get the normal one. Source only has added water effects or something. The general consensus us disappointment at the meger effort they put into any noticeable improvements. If memory serves, the game uses the same skins and AI acts the same. Same textures... etc. But the water looks pretty.

I would buy original. That way you will have base game for gold source mods (for original HL), while you already have base game for Source mods.

Go get the plain version Half-life, the game is great and if you haven't played it before, it'll take you some time to finish it. Very good game overall, it may seem somewhat outdated, but it's glorious if you think of the tame it came. After finishing it go play Half-life 2 and the episodes.
The source variant has wonky engine that in times does not represent the true level design of HL1.

I would say Source, it's longer and harder but if you want the original story then you should take the original one.

hl source is graphically a little bit better and i found also a texture pack for hl source that akes the game even look better.

otherwise as said before load teh free mod black mesa source und you have half life in the engine of half life 2. that looks great.

i have the old original on cd, hl source in steam and also the black mesa mod.

just take them all, theyre not too expensive

Both. Theres a guy on steamtrades who sells the entire Half-life bundle for only $5.50 which is a crazy good deal.
