It's for the different types of giveaways. Private being that the giveaway is not public, and anyone with the link can enter. Group being that the people who enter/can see it in the list need to be part of a certain group which are either public or private groups. The nice thing about group giveaways is that even if the link is leaked (which happened some times during private giveaways) they can't enter unless they belong to said group. (or even see the entries and things like that)

Just to clarify the "group" in this case means you must be part of a "Steam Group". For example you can join the SteamGifts group here

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamgifts

They occassionally have a giveaway for the SG group that you can enter if you are part of this Steam Group.

Other websites and such have private Steam groups where they can trade games between their own members as well.

They are not winnings they are ended giveaways. I need to clarify this point because somehow many people think that someone create giveaway, another win and the site gives the gift. Yet it's not like that.
The rest is already told up there.

Private giveaways are not shown on the site and can only be found if you've been given the direct link to it by the author.
As for group giveaways, the one who creates a giveaway can select any steam group he is a member of, for the giveaway to be visible to just it's members.

When you create a giveaway you've got three options to choose from:

  • public giveaway - this is just a normal giveaway you can see on the main page
  • private giveaway - this giveaway will not be shown on the main page and if you want someone to join it, you need to give them a link
  • group giveaway - this giveaway is visible only to members of selected Steam group. So if you created a giveaway for "Linkin Park Fanclub" group, only members of that group would be able see it on the main page.
