Hey guys, i'm thinking about getting wireless controller and pretty much made up my mind about buying Microsoft one just to be sure i don't need to emulate stuff and generally want easy Plug and Play. Thing is, there is few controllers with very similar price and well obvious answer should be, buy the newest one, buut i want to be sure all games work fine with it, especially older ones (i assume new games won't have problem with either controller). So do you have experience with any of those controllers? Were there games with controller support you couldn't play it with it? Which one is easier to set up with pc? Which one would you pick?

i feel so ashamed for not having a GA, please forgive me

I have both X360 and XOne controller - there is no problem at all with compatibility of XOne, they use the very same signal inputs thus are interpret the same by your system, only difference is in shape and ergonomics, but this comes to your personal preferences. For example I like XOne better - fot me it has better analog sticks and much much better triggers (I dislike X360 triggers a lot), but X360 has imho bych better D-Pad, diagonal clicks on XOne are much harder than on X360.
So tl;dr in way they will work they will be absolutelly the same, you just gotta try them all and find which feels the best in your hand, as it;'s only difference you will get ;)

I'm sorry, but from everything I read just now, it was the shoulder bumpers they revised not the Dpad. I could have sworn it was the Dpad. I have a Crimson Gears of War version, that does not have the revised grip texture, and a standard black version that does have the revised grip texture. Playing something like They Bleed Pixels, is impossible with the Dpad on the Gears of War controller, but fine on the Dpad on the fully revised plain black controller.

I guess the bumpers are slightly different, functionality is nearly the same though so I don't think it's worse or anything on the new controllers.

Both of mine are S versions, so I can't compare, but apparently people complained that the original shoulder buttons were too stiff and were only reliable if you pressed in on them on the outer 1/3rd of the button. The S version are responsive no matter where you press on the button.

Why do you think they revised the dpad on the Xbox One S version? I have an original Xbone controller and the newer one, both d-pads are the same. Only difference is the bluetooth compatibility and textured feel on the back of the controller. The d-pad is better than an Xbox 360 controller but it's still absolute crap compared to a Dualshock 4.

Never had an issue, but that being said I am not using official adapter (bought controller without adapter on a very cheap deal - new ones were being sold for like 20-25$, the big electronics shop was shutting down and were selling all off their storages ;p), I bought some unbranded chinese adapter for 1.5$, only problem I had was installing chinise drivers, but works flawlessly ever since.

I'm just frustrated that I've payed those 15$ more to get the official adapter in order for it to work flawlessly. If a fresh install of Windows won't solve the problem, then I'll definitely get one as well.

Yeah I've updated it both manually and automatically, but nothing. I practically have given up trying to make it work.

The thing that makes me angry is that it works perfectly fine outside of Steam, but the time I open Steam it disconnects after a couple minutes. It's not possible to reconnect it after that.

You should just get the One controller, be careful that only the S version works with bluetooth, you'll need Microsoft wireless adaptor to use the first version in wireless mode.
The One version is basically an upgraded 360 controller, better ergonomics, more resistant to stress, more accurate sticks, d-pad incredibly improved, the triggers i think it depends on people as some might find them uncomfortable (i don't).

Given that One S was temporarily cheaper than One i ordered S. Still a bit confused about connection thing. I saw in description it easily plugs into Windows 10 devices thanks to bluetooth, but does my pc have bluetooth on some hardware or do i need to buy some bluetooth stick for that ? I'm sure on xbox you don't need to connect anything, but on pc how does it recognizes controller?
EDIT: nvm i found answer, god i hope i can just buy a usb stick for it

With the S version, you need a bluetooth connection, either integrated in the PC or with a usb stick (they're available for really cheap anyway). With the first version - you can recognize them by looking at the top where the Xbox button is - you always need the Xbox wireless adapter, which is stupidly expensive.
Anyway if you got the One controller - either version - i strongly suggest you into buying the Play & Charge kit if you can find it for cheap (i paid about 12 eur for that) so you can avoid using AA batteries.

You dont need to use normal AA Batteries....you can also use rechargable AA which should still be cheaper than a play and charge kit.....even if you still have to buy a recharger for them (and you are not limited in use of them....and you can buy rechargables with more capacity and use them)

AA batteries drain faster than the P&C though. Anyway is quite easy to find a cheap P&C, about the same price for a bundle of good rechargeable batteries, at least here. 12 euros for 4 2500mah rechargeable AAs, the same price i've spent on the P&C (sure, you still have two extra batteries left, but i don't really use them anymore at all).

just wondering - why do you think D-Pad got "incredibly improved"? Overall I prefer XOne over X360 a lot, but D-Pad for me is the only thing they made worse - diagonal clicks on XOne are almost impossible, on X360 they always registered properly for me, while on XOne in 90% of time it first registers one click followed by second only then registering it as diag-click.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The problem is that it isn't really reliable for those games that are better played with the d-pad rather than the sticks, like fighters. When i try to do a double input to dash in Tekken 7 often the pad register it as Up and makes me jump. Plus there's almost no feedback when actually pressing the button, unlike the One version which has a distinct click when you input a direction. Yes, diagonals are more difficult to do (mostly because of the shape of the d-pad rather than its construction) but most games will rarely use a diagonal, unless you're a heavy SFV player, but then i think you're better off just buying an arcade stick.

I played fighting games with X360 (but no Tekken, this I played only on PlayStation so cannot really relate to this particular example) and didn't have much problem with it, but then again I'm no pro in fighting games, I may learn a few moves and combos but I am mostly a noob ;) anyway thanks for explanation - seems different people have different needs ;) For you it is needed that you get distinct feedback from D-Pad, for me it's more important that it will not misinterpret my inputs, which is especially annoying in top-down or isometric movement (for example my character will go left up covering one more space in topdown instead of moving diagonally). Anyway thanks for explanation ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, for me the 360 one DOES misinterpret inputs and certainly i'm not a pro in fighting games lol. So yes, i guess are different needs. Anyway the Dualshock 4 has the superior d-pad of both, so i guess you could just plug that instead?

EDIT: or you can use (if you can find it for cheap lol) the Elite One controller, is stupidly expensive, but you can just insert whatever d-pad you prefer.

For me this line of controllers are the best, has a XBOX layout but it is cheaper, very durable (biggest problem with PC controllers for me is that the analogues tend to break easily) and the best feature is that it has a switch at the back that lets you toggle between XInput and Dualshock, so it is the most plug and play-able of controllers :).

I recently bought one second hand from a pawnshop (already have a "First hand" one from what 4 years ago) and thought hey a cheap second one so I got it :) they both work perfectly fine so I'd suggest this controller hands down :)

And you do get a wireless controller from them as well which I assume would have the same functionality so look for that then :P

Hey, I don't know about other controllers, but I used to have a couple of wired 360 controllers, and they both failed du to the connexion in the cable becoming damaged. So I recently bought a wireless Xbox one (I think S) controller, and it's great. It feels very good in hands, and no cable is a definitive plus. Also make sure to take the one which is compatible with Bluetooth (if your PC have bluetooth) it makes it easier to connect it (otherwise just get a dongle.
I found it for around £40 on amazon, + £12 for a rechargeable batterie and cable. Definitely worth it in my opinion.

Lucky you. I've tried numerous times to get my wife interested in gaming, but it always results in failure. Having played BBT, I fear that one would be no different. I recently got her to try Telltale's The Wolf Among Us, thinking that was a good story that's essentially a which-way book. As soon as it reached one of the confrontation scenes where you have to follow along with the button press queues, she put the controller down and said she didn't like it. She says she doesn't like games where you have to press buttons and stuff.....well there goes ALL games pretty much except HOGs and VNs which are not multiplayer.

She has been known to play some Mortal Kombat every now and then though. I guess beating the crap out of somebody is worth the button presses :-)

well - my fiancee was a gamer already, even before I met her, heck in some aspects even more hardcore gamer than me myself (she used to be semi-pro StarCraft player in her highschool times, competing in local tournaments and stuff like that). She just didn't like idea of coop and any coop game we would play would end up in massive argument and she not speaking to me for next few days. That was before playing Battleblock thou ;p in many coop games one would get mad at other because you lose not because you screwed up but because partner did - in BBT even if you are cooperating you are supposed to often screw up with each other and there's nothing wrong with that - and that's what we really needed ;p

LOL. I've never played BBT co-op but I know there are achieves for screwing your co-op partner. So she's so competitive that if she doesn't like your play in this game she can just kill you.

I won Octodad Dadliest Catch from InuKat on here quite a while ago. You're an Octopus parading as a human with twin stick controls of arms and legs. If you play co-op, each person has control of half his body. I would love to be a fly on the wall watching you guys try to play that :-)

but I want to be sure all games work fine with it, especially older ones

Then you don't want a Microsoft Xbox controller, they are Xinput, and old games are Dinput. Get a Logitech F710 instead. It has a D/X input switch on it so it works with every single game and doesn't need any 3rd party software or configuration hacks to work with all games, old and new.

I have those controllers, and they don't officially support Windows 10. Logitech has just abandoned them since 10 came out. They have released a W 10 version of their mapping software (which is kind of useless since it only supports DInput), but for drivers they've always relied on the drivers built into Windows and those changed in W 10 and don't support F710 anymore.

Windows 10 will initially detect them and list them properly in device manager, but eventually drops them and lists them as some generic device in device manager - won't work in Steam. You can get around it by manually forcing it to use the X360 driver and it works fine, but every couple of weeks when I'd go to play a game the controller wouldn't work. Go check device manager and it's listed as some generic device again. After reading tons of forum posts of people with the same complaints, I gave up and bought XBOX One S controllers.

You have something wrong with your computer. Mine is flawless in Win 10, so is the optional and unneeded remapping program you are referring to.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I wasn't saying the remapping software doesn't work, just that it's only for use while the controller is in DInput mode. Most people would have no use for that as games have been using XInput for years.

The controllers worked fine on multiple computers in my house when I was on W7. After upgrading to W 10 they still worked, since I assume there was something left in place during the upgrade. Once the systems had a clean W10 install, the controllers became problematic. The only way to use them was to force them to use X360 driver in Windows, but it resets a every so often and you have to do it again.

It's great if they're working for you, but it's not just me having the problem. I spent many hours reading forums of other people with the same problem under Windows 10.

The system requirements at the bottom of the product page even says Windows 8, 7 or Vista. They don't list Windows 10 because they know it's broken.

Got it when it was discounted on Amazon, wasn't really compatible with some games that i've tried. Rayman Legends just wouldn't recognize it, older Need For Speed games worked, but needed external tweaking to make them use analogue sticks and on Helldivers there was a conflict with the 360 controller. I wasn't impressed.
Refunded, got the One controller instead, works flawlessly out of the box with everything that i've tried so far.

You must have been using it wrong. It sounds like you had the switch on D in X input games or vice versa, or soft other computer problem. Mine works perfectly in Rayman Legends and the original Most Wanted.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you're on Windows 10, you were probably having the same problem as most others. It will work fine in DInput mode for DInput games as it's using the Logitech driver. Once you switch it to XInput mode, it relies on Windows' built in driver and it's not properly supported on W10 and shows as some generic device in device manager. The receiver dongle is in need of a flash update to fix it, but it's not flashable, so no fix from Logitech.

Thank god I can use the micro usb cable that my tablet uses for charging as the wire since the gamepad doe not come with one.

So be careful on how you choose.

The ONLY upside is that it does not need any emulation for any game, unless you want to force the game to use a gamepad.

If you go with the XBOX One S controller, you can connect by bluetooth (if your PC has bluetooth), or by connecting to the MS wireless dongle, or plug it in via USB cable (if you currently have neither bluetooth nor dongle).

If you're going to add on bluetooth to your PC, comments online say to go with a higher end bluetooth dongle. I had a couple of older ones laying around and neither one worked. I bought a V4.0 one, and it works fine with the One S controllers in Windows and SteamOS/Linux.

For MS wireless dongle, it only supports Windows 10. Using it allows additionally functionality that is not available when connected via bluetooth. It has a headphone jack in the bottom of the controller which can be used if connected via the dongle. Normally if I was going to play online with my headset, I would have to quit Steam, change the settings in Windows for default audio and communication device, and relaunch Steam & game. With these controllers, connected to the dongle, plugging in a headset automatically switches Windows from your current audio settings to use the headset. When you unplug it, it auto switches it back to whatever it was before. You can even do it while a game is running. No more having to relaunch Steam. If you get the One S controller with product code CWT-00001, it comes with the dongle.

As for compatibility problems you were concerned about, the XOne and 360 controllers do differ in the way the triggers are handled in software. I have two Logitech F710 (X360 compatible) pads and they have problems with the triggers in certain games (A.R.E.S and Assault Android Cactus off the top of my head). The trigger buttons randomly fire without pressing them. Since upgrading to the XOne S controllers, those games play fine.

It just uses a standard USB- microUSB cable. Good chance you'll have a short one from a phone charger or something. The controllers can do firmware update only via USB cable on Windows, not wirelessly. You have to download the XBOX accessories app from the Windows 10 Store to do the firmware update. You may have problems with bluetooth connectivity without applying the firmware update. I got both my controllers in the last 6 months, and neither one of them had the new firmware.

Don't worry about the firmware update, it's quick and easy. Plus you may not even need it if yours in new stock with current firmware.

I know many people recommend those play and charge packs, but then you end up with a proprietary battery pack that can only be used in your XBOX controllers. I use Eneloop (they also make Eneloop Pro version with higher charge capacity - last longer) rechargeable batteries, as they are a hybrid rechargeable that doesn't lose charge when not in use like regular rechargeable batteries do. They are expensive, but when on sale you can get kits that come with charger and AA/AAA batteries, competitively priced to the XBOX charger kit, that you can use in anything in your house.

I grab some more Eneloops when they go on sale, and eventually it got to the point that everything in my house including TV remotes and clocks are using Eneloops. I leave some charged ones under the table by the couch, so they're handy if my controller dies. Alakaline batteries can sit on store shelves or in a drawer at your house for a long time and still be good. Normal rechargeable batteries lose their charge just sitting there, so they're dead when you go to use them. Eneloops claim to hold 70% of their charge for up to 5 years when not in use, so you can leave charged ones in storage and rely on them being good when you go to use them.

Oh to be honest i didn't gave it much thought. I ordered Panasonic AA 2700mAh as they were half the price of Eneloop, yet with great ratings. Well in case they go bad i'll buy the Eneloop ones next time.

Sounds like you already have made your decision. I noticed though that you said that you have an Xbox 360 and not an Xbox one. Why not just buy an Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows instead, if you already have a couple of wireless Xbox 360 controllers lying around? That is what I have and they work just as easily with either platform after pairing.

Most games with controller support today were developed with the Xbox 360 in mind as the gold standard and if you want a trouble free installation, this gamepad would be your best bet. Granted that the Xbox One controller has better features(although I have read that the bluetooth feature on the newer Xbox One controllers occasionally has connection issues), if you are already used to using the 360 controller on your console, it shouldn't make much of a difference using it on the PC as well.

If you only have one 360 controller and need more, it is much cheaper to buy an extra 360 gamepad and a receiver(than a pair of Xbox One models) to work with your existing one.

The only reason I would get another type of controller other than the 360 for the PC(assuming you don't already have an Xbox One or PS4 console lying around with multiple controllers available) is if you play a lot of fighting games competitively. You would need a better Dpad for that and the 360's D pad is notorious for being hard to work with in those kind of games.

I think there is some misunderstanding. I have only wired xbox 360 controllers and 3rd party wireless controller which doesn't work on much games. I don't own any xbox console, i bought those controllers for PC.

I see. Well if you plan to go wireless and don't have previous wireless Xbox 360 controllers then you have more of a choice. If cost is a factor, the 360 would be the better alternative as you can sometimes buy a couple of genuine Microsoft 360 controllers for the price of just one newer model Xbox One gamepad. If not, then maybe the Xbox One model might work for you. I find the Xbox One's sticks too sensitive myself(being used to the 360), but the Xbox One's Dpad does work a bit better than the 360.

However if you plan to play coop with your friends, you can always combine your wired Xbox 360 controllers with a wireless one if you can get an Xbox 360 receiver for Windows.

Definitely Xbox One. I can only recommend it to people using the Xbox 360 controller simply because it's just THAT much better.

I have the Xbone and it's great. Only problem I run into is that my wireless adapter keeps disconnecting when Steam is on. No idea why that happens and I'm yet to find a solution to what is a major problem.

However if you decide to use it as a wired one, it's great. The ergonomics are awesome, coming from a guy who was using a PS controller his whole life, and so is it's build quality. I really can't say much for it's durability as mine is brand new.

My recommendation is the Logitech F710.

I bought a xbox 360 wireless controller and was satisfied at first, but the D-Pad "swims" and is VERY imprecise. I heard the x One controller is improved in that matter, but others state the opposite.
The D-Pad is very important to me, soi bought a Logitech F710 (wireless) which has compared to x360 just slightly worse sticks, but a to my standards perfect d-pad. The driver makes the rumble motor run slower on my windows PC somehow, but i don't care about it.

So, if you're mainly playing 1st/3rd person games where the sticks are you main input the xbox controller might be better (though i don't know why you would not use M/KB for that), but for games like platformers where you need a precise D-Pad the xbox controller is a mayor pain in the butt.

For my b-day my friends gifted me Dualshock 4 controller with Bluetooth. It's really good controller and I enjoy it a lot. Simple to set up, if the game has full controller support simply click on Steam Big Picture mode and the controller will work. Of course for some game you have to run a program like Dualshock for windows. If you are not in mood to spent some time set up stuff simply get Xbox One controller

In the last year they extended the Steam controller configuration in Steam, to allow complete configuration of XBOX, PS, and Generic pads the same way as was previously only available on a real Steam controller. Doesn't this new functionality allow you to use that and do away with DS for Windows software?

Yeah you can say goodbye to DSforWIn but for example you can't play Fifa without it.

Really? How is that possible? Adding FIFA as non-steam game and launch it with big picture mode?

I've used my EasySMX controller for 2 years and it's great. The d-pad is very precise unlike the 360 one.

IMO, Microsoft controllers are overpriced.

Having used a lot of controllers over the years, I think the Microsoft controllers are actually worth every penny. But I've bought all my XB1 S controllers for $30, only $5 more than the controller you recommend. But if you're happy with it, that's great!

That's a great price. When I was looking to replace my old controller, the XB1 one was around $65.

I have an Xbox 360, XB1 S, and DualShock 4 controller, and if I was buying a controller now I'd get the XB1 S - it's much better.

The 360 controller fits my hands like a glove, but the d-pad is terrible, the thumbsticks all show some drift (noticeable in Metal Gear Rising Revengeance), the thumbsticks wear away really quickly, and the face buttons are hard and round and painful after a while.

The XB1 S controller doesn't feel as comfortable to hold, but the face buttons are flatter and more comfortable, the thumbsticks have no drift and thus far seem very durable, the d-pad is actually good for a change, and you can hit the shoulder buttons without taking your fingers off the triggers.

The DS 4 is really comfortable (second to the 360), and has great flat and soft face buttons. But the thumbstick layout is best suited to platformers, and I've encountered issues with it on some games where one of the buttons was just not being detected.

Thanks for detailed info. I ended up ordering XB 1 S controller, so hopefully i will get used to holding it. I'll be sure to try DS4 in future too though (i like position of left stick much better on ps controllers, but something tells me it won't plug into many pc games so easily).

The thumbstick position is something you get used to. I used to feel the same way, but after spending more time with the controllers, I now feel the opposite.

On the Xbox controllers my thumbs naturally lay over the left thumbstick and face buttons, which is ideal for 99% of the games I play with a controller - action, adventure, arcade racing, beat-em-up, JRPG, etc.

On the DS4, my left thumb naturally falls over the d-pad, which is ideal for precision platformers and fighting games, but I rarely play those games. And the last time I did play such a game, Shantae: Risky's Revenge, the game wouldn't detect one of the shoulder buttons on the DS4, so I had to switch back to the XB1 controller.

I personally bought a xbox one S controller (for 40$ during black friday) which you can connect to your pc via one of these methods: 1) USB cable 2) usb adabter 3) bluetooth, I use bluetooth right now and it works great; I don't have that by deafult on the mobo so i bought a usb 4.0 bluetooth called bluggable for 13.99$

Thanks, yeah that's my choice too. Ordered S controller (and charger + batteries) and will buy one 4.0 bluetooth dongle for it.

Did you get the official battery pack or just rechargeable AA batteries?
The AAs are a much better deal, I got a pair with a charger for about half the price of the battery pack.

I got rechargeable batteries and charger. It was a bit pricier than xbox charger pack, but i have ton of remotes and i bet it will come handy in future anyway.

Yeah, even if they do start off being more expensive it'll probably be a better deal in the long run since you can use the batteries in more stuff and if the battery pack died you'd have to get the whole thing again.
