I recently had a chat with someone who was trying to trade whatever he had for a hib that was payed exactly $1. This user had no paypal, no bank account, etc. Doesn't care about how the money was split or anything just as long as he or she got the games.

I rarely hear of anyone not having any means to buy anything on steam other than MAYBE their parent's credit card but having seen how far this user is willing to go for a hib, what do you guys think? Would you shame such users or pity them?

I'm actually not sure what to make of this but that might be because I have a major headache.

What are you asking exactly? If there are actually people out there that can't buy the HiB for credit card reasons?

I'd pity them. In fact, I pitied one so much, I actually bought him the last Indie Royale (not the Serious Sam Lightning Pack, but the proper bundle before that). I seem to recall getting blasted by at least two members of this site for it. Meh. The guy even offered to give me back something in return when he could pay (said in about two weeks), but I turned the offer down, so I don't know if he'd follow through or not. Still, some people genuinely can't pay for whatever reason. Doesn't mean they're all beggars.

Totally agree, people tend to misjudge people who can't pay games, whatever they do and how many times they try, they simply aren't able to. Even if they are 18 or older.

For example, you can't use Paypal in my country, the reason why I'm on this website on the first place, however, I'm still struggling to give whatever I can get.

Not buying/gifting steam games doesn't necessarily mean you're poor and a beggar. And people tend to think that these guys are total faggots.

I have no legal way of adding funds to my Steam Account (No Credit Card - I'm 25 - I just don't need one - Generally...) - The only way I can do it is to pay others to gift games to me :|

a regular checking/debit card works for adding funds as long as there is money in your bank account.. hell you can even buy a gift card and use that to buy games online (yes i've done it)

They don't sell Steam gift cards in this country, and PayPal only accepts bank transfers from inside the US.

Will make a separate thread for this :)

They don't sell Steam Gift cards anywhere. They don't exist. He means things like Visa gift cards which you buy at retailers and can act as a credit card online.

Exactly. When I want to buy something online, I just pop down to Wally world and grab a pre-paid visa. Simple as that.

Prepaid cards are not common at all around the world. I had never heard of such a thing until just a few weeks ago.

So I've heard in the meantime. That's too bad. It's quite convenient. They're fairly new to me, as far as that goes, though.

When I had a job, I'd buy games on Steam for other people. Sometimes, I'd do this for people I didn't even know if I was in a pub on TF2 or something and they were talking about it. I'd add that person and message them "Sup, about that game you wanted..." And I never asked for anything in return, nor did I expect anything in return. Typically, to avoid that altogether, beyond a simple thanks, I'd delete that person off my friends list and be done with it, just to ensure they didn't try to repay me or anything.

Most of the time it was for friends though, friends I know who are incapable of buying some of the games we'd play together if they had them. And I've had friends who did this for me as well. L4D2 was a gift to me by one of my friends of eight years; occasionally if he really wants someone to play with he'll ask me if my system can play the game at all and then surprise me with it. So I'd pity them.

I don't own a credit card, and not by own option... I have to use virtual credit cards over my debit card (a portuguese banking service), however, sometimes, this virtual cards won't work on steam and bundle sites and never with paypal, even with more than enough cash available. The worst being that even if the transaction gets rejected and I cancel the virtual card, the money is "on hold" for a few days (almost a week). This makes me loose great chances to get some titles at low cost, loosing the timing if I can't find one of my friends to give the money for him to buy and send me... So I can relate to the issue as long as it's not clear case of begging.

Life can be tough... at any age I suppose. Not all our dreams come true, not all our plans work out... Sometimes there is just nothing we can do. I definitely would NEVER shame anyone who is willing to give something back and is desperate (begging could be different but trying to exchange is 100% NO for me).

I remembered just now this story. When we had a time when there was already some food on sale, but people literally had no money to buy it (price/income relationship was horrible) myself, at that time an early teen, was qeueing with my father to buy some veges on a market. Than suddenly in front of us a somewhat-poor-looking old woman approached the seller and said "I want to exchange these two apples for a cucumber, they are good (they were good indeed) and someone gave them to me, but I rather need a cucumber". Of course the seller said "No way". My father immediately stepped in and said "I buy it for you". And even though the old woman objected he just got out the money and paid. I asked him "Dad, why do you do this? There are lots of beggars around (there were really many at that time, indeed) and we haven't go that much money anyway (as we did)." And he said "This woman is no beggar, she is very limited but she is trying to actually DO something. People like this both need and deserve help, which they should get".

I think this explains my position well.

I hope I'm not opening the flood gates, but I read in an interview with the humble bundle creator that said he bought a few bundles for people who couldn't afford them. Not sure if that'd still be the case though. Interesting read though

I'd pity them, because I'm one of them, and I know how frustrating it is to not own a credit card. "Ah you own so many games, I think you are lying!" I'm not, most of the stuff I own (~93%) are from either my friends who gifted me or contests I won, and the bundles... I get them from a certain place with a 4 on the name (not sure if I can talk about it here), even though I know they've paid the minimum or divided unfairly, but it is the only choice I have and I hate when people tell me to "Stop being a jew and buy it myself" or stuff like this.

It is really annoying. Last time I tried to get myself a bundle was the Humble Indie Bundle 4 (for the bonus, as I got a key from a humble guy in the chatroom of S.Gifts), as begging to my father to buy me it didn't work, I ended up trying trading, got nothing, and ended up without even trying out the game I really wanted.

Thus, even though I don't have any means to buy it, it doesn't mean I will pirate it. Pirating indie games is worse than paying the minimum.

Dunno. I'm sorta new to those kind of sites, but during the holiday sales, I tried two at the same time, Swagbucks and Prize Rebel. I've had moderate success. About $25 in Amazon Gift cards over 2 months (though I'm probably going to leave SB behind because they changed some rules).
Through a LOT of luck I managed to get Dungeon Defenders and Total War Shogun 2 for trading purposes during the holiday, this gave me two of those $5 off coupons, which I later turned into a free Dead Space 2 and the other paid for Sonic Generations with another $10 total gift card(thank goodness they put Sonic up on the end of January). My last $5 went to Dead Space.

Everything else in my Steam library was pure luck or friends. My steam wallet has always been empty :/

Well, who cares? You can get the games for a penny, or you can get a steam key for a dollar. and you get a bunch of games for 5 dollars.

Pity them, of course! I was one of them for over 5 years, after all. I was too young to own a debit card, didn't have any money to put in it anyway, and my mother is too afraid of internet scams to let me use hers for online payments. In fact, I'm surprised I've seen so many people who think being able to make online payments is common. It is not.

In fact, I don't know anyone else my age who has a debit or credit card here, in Bulgaria. And this is a EU member country we're talking about. Also important is the fact that the most common (and promoted) debit card here cannot be used for international payments.

I live in the middle of Russia and I can count three diferrent ways of making a valid debit card to pay for things online. 1) loads of different banks around give these out for dollar a year; 2) many online auctions offer prepaid visa cards which work everywhere, and you can pay for these with SMS or any other web-money system you fancy; 3) I don't know if you guys have these things, but every second shop here in Russia has a terminal for payments for telephone/internet and all that shiz. They also offer a VISA virtual card with easy ways of adding funds on it (just go to the nearest shop and feed it some money).

And these are just debit cards which are accepted everywhere (even on paypal). There's at least three more independent payment providers that are acceptable in many places: WebMoney, QIWI, Yandex.Money.

The excuse "I have the money but no way to pay with them" is just not valid. It's not that you don't have the way, it's that you can't be arsed to research your available solutions and methods of payment. Those who want shall find what they seek.

People who have no money, on the other hand are another matter... But then again, if you have a PC and an internet access surely you must have a few dollars to pay for a cheap game? Even if you're an underage kid, you can ask your parents to give you money or better yet ask them to "hire" you to do some house chores, they will be thrilled to see you developing some nice business skills that will help you along in your future. And if your parents also don't have any money to give you then I must ask how are you reading this message, because that would require a pretty expensive equipment which must be bought beforehand.

In Slovenia there is no way to get a free Visa/Mastercard if you're over 18. There are no prepaid cards like that as well.

Only way you can do it here is with PaySafeCard which makes you pay 1€ per PSC(which is a lot).

over 18? I think you meant under. And what's wrong with asking an older brother/parent to open a card in their name? And try googling/asking about prepaids or virtual cards, research is everything. Up until a half a year ago I thought there was no way to pay for stuff online for me too but then I made an effort to actually get to know the situation around me better and there I found a number of solutions.
