So, did you play it?
I've not heard of those, but they both seem like the same thing. Thanks for sharing those! Did you actually play either yourself?

I meant the same as the concept from my original post, not the each other. :D

I'm afraid you're about two years late. The email part died long ago, a kind of a backup with copies of websites created for the game was still available for a couple of years, but now it's impossible even to start the game as it requires online registration and can't connect to anything.

I read about it on TV tropes, and an article that it linked to, but beyond that, I don't know anything else though. But I am intrigued by what I do know, and I wish that more things like that existed.
Though, now that you mention it, I do know a game that's somewhat like that, but it's on mobile: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.telltalegames.exfiltration

That looks neat as well. I may have to give it a try. :)
Edit: Seems the game is very buggy and reviews don't actually speak so well of it. :(

So I bought and downloaded it. Crashes after the intro movie... every time. :(

To see how real and authentic the experience is. The game was pretending to be a real person or organization communicating with you. What happens if you test that? Does it hold up or does it reveal the illusion? That's something I think a lot of players would experiment with. I would.

Ok, I get that, but this was at a time when all of this interfacing was brand-spanking new. If the genre took off better, I could see better development in that regard.

Majestic was an amazing game... getting phone calls and emails.... the very first alternate reality game that did it right - still to this day im not sure why they closed it down. The game is a total classic movie!

From what I read, after 9/11 people seemed less interested in it. Not sure if that's the reason, but lack of interest after that point is what's cited.

That is a damn shame but I thought it was shut down well before then - but I could easily be wrong on that. It is certainly worth a remake/reboot though, that much is for sure!

There's a pretty neat ARG currently active, it's called The Black Watchmen.
Haven't even heard about Majestic, but The Game is one of my favourite movies ever.

That does look interesting. Wishlisted at least for now. :)

Boy, I really liked the movie "The Game" with Michael Douglas... I liked the idea behind it and thought it would be VERY cool to go through a similar (but much less hardcore) experience. A few years later, Majestic came along and provided nearly just that. I don't even remember where I originally heard about it, but I paid for and started playing the game right around the time it was closing up. I got really engrossed in it (I got faxes!!) and loved it, but almost immediately was done due to the game's shutdown. As a result, I really didn't progress very far, and that was really disappointing.
I haven't really found a similar option to play with/in. The closest I've found are games like Ingress and father.io, but neither of those comes close to the immersion I got from Majestic, and really, they have very different goals in the first place. Does anyone know of any other similar games/experiences?
