Hello there,
I have a rather annoying problem, in my group, I have 787 members counted by on sg, but on the official group page on steam, there are actually only 599 members. Who are these extra members? People who have been kicked, months ago. I often go through the pages to catch people who are using the group improperly, and when I see multiple people on EVERY PAGE that are inactive, it's annoying. (going through 188 extra members, just to find the inactive ones still in the group.)

So, I thought of a solution that I think would be welcome.
Could there be Group refresh buttons? One for every group, for only the creator of that group to use to force sync everyone's in the groups accounts here on sg, at least once a month. So you could only click the button once a month, (or three months) to clean out the inactive members.
OR give support members the ability to force sync groups via ticket request.
OR have permabanned SG members to have their "groups" reset/zeroed out upon being banned.

If you have any additional ideas, I would love to hear them, or something to add on.

Please consider this. Would make life so much easier.

Also, if you could please bump the topic. <3

Thanks for reading!

Do you approve of a group refresh button?

Yay!
Nay!

Is it possible to ask support for a forced group sync?
Edit: A groupy sync done by support sounds more in agreement with SG's principles than a group sync done by a regular member.

I don't know if support can do that, I haven't read anything or heard them of ever doing so. And a regular member would not be able to force sync the group, just the creator.

Support can't do it right now (at least I think so), but giving support the right to do so, would be better in terms of user permissions. There would have to be an additional role if you want to identify group owners.

I'm going to add this onto the topic, this would also be a good solution. I worry that it might burden them though, there are quite a few groups. I would wonder if they would have to do it individually as well.

Shouldn't members that leave or get kicked from a group on Steam only remain in the group on SG for about a week until they're forced to sync their accounts (this is assuming SG's current group sync is working properly again)?

They have to log on for the account to sync, I have members that haven't been active in 3+ months.

In which case they can't enter your group giveaways anyway. But I suppose the discrepancy could make group management difficult.

Yes, but if they haven't logged in in 3+ months, it won't sync their account till they log in. Again, I have 135 people who have not logged in, in more than three months, they probably wont come back for a long time, if at all.

I can see the button might be useful, but there is also an add on to see who was inactive and when. But for 800+ members that is tedious

Could you post the add on? Is it one of those scripts? I don't really use those because I'm not very tech savvy, I might mess something up somehow. It would be interesting to look at though. But even if it does show when a user has been inactive, would it show if they are still in the group or not?

At first I thought you are talking about Sighery's Find Those Bans script, since that adds Last active dates to all users on your BL but since I assume it only works on your BL that's probably not it.

Such button might be a good way to force sync for kicked members, although ArchiBoT does that better with 200+ blacklist threat 😁.

Not sure how easy or difficult it would be to implement such a button, but it would sure be very useful for managing larger groups.

I don't know how difficult it would be either, but I'm sure it would be useful in the long run.

Yes please! We have a ex-member who was permanently suspended from SG and now is permanently stuck in our group list.

Instead of a ticket to request a group resync though.. wouldn't it be nice if someone who hasn't logged in for a month was just
automatically removed from all groups without needing a support request? If they ever log back in again they can simply do
a sync themselves to enroll in all their groups.

Or, in order to keep people in groups for a bit longer.. have it staged... each month you don't log in, you get an auto re-sync..
this will remove them from any kicked groups, but keep them enrolled in the others. After three months, stop doing the auto
sync, and just remove them from all groups. This will keep the server from having to endlessly resync inactive people.

It would mean less work for support and also mean that a single person going rogue won't require 10 groups to request a resync.

I would not approve of automatically being removed from all groups for two reasons, 1.) a month is not that long, some times people just need a break, I think 3 or more months would be more realistic. 2.) some groups are not strict on how often you need to have been logged in. I really like the idea of an auto sync every month, but considering sg has over 985,000+ members, I fear that would put stress or lag on the servers.
You do have some really good ideas overall though, any force sync for inactive members would be welcome if it was implemented here on sg in my book! ^^

Yeah, one month might be a bit too aggressive. But one thing to remember is that being de-synced, so to speak, doesn't actually remove you from the groups, it just temporarily clears your membership here on SG until the next sync. If you're not logging in at all, then it really doesn't matter to you one way or the other. The first moment you return, you sync and you're good to go again; no worse for wear.

The potential problem is more for the group admins, who will again have group membership and numbers that don't reconcile between SG and Steam because inactive members will still appear over on Steam. But as problems go, that is wildly preferable to the opposite and current problem where there are extra members here on SG that you can do nothing about. If you're unhappy with inactive members, you can always kick them from Steam, (which is a bit mean maybe, lol), but you're in control, no support request needed.

Anyway, hopefully something that works well can be found that doesn't tax support or the SG servers too much.

Yes, but if the user doesn't log back in, they stay as a member on the group page, and that is the whole problem. I have so many inactive members in my group , that group management is actually becoming a problem! And while you may think kicking them from steam is enough, and

"But as problems go, that is wildly preferable to the opposite and current problem where there are extra members here on SG that you can do nothing about."

but it's not! I don't care about the extra members on sg! they don't directly affect me and my ability to manage my members! I don't care about the "extra" members of sg, I care about the inactive people, and the people who are misusing my group! This is the whole reason why I'm asking sg to put in a group button/ asking support to add another role so they can force-sync groups. I can't solve this problem by myself, I want support to help me, and other group's like mine, where inactive members are getting way to big to manage.

Anyway, I really hope this issue is solved though, thank you for your support!

No. Somehow we're not communicating here, i'm sorry that I haven't made myself more clear.

What I'm suggesting is that for inactive members.. they get auto-synced once a month for the first couple of months. You seem to agree that would be okay. But that can't go on forever, because it will burden the SG servers too much; there are too many inactive users. So what I propose, is that after 3 months, if a user is still inactive, then all their group membership information is simply purged here on SG. This means they will no longer appear in the SG group web page.

Think of it this way, you know when you first add a new member over on Steam? They do not show up on your group web page until they log in and sync here on Steamgifts. This is the identical situation that such a system will be creating. They will appear on your group page only after they do a manual sync.

The problem right now is that SG only does automatic syncs for active members. So this doesn't happen for permanently suspended or inactive people. What I'm proposing is a compromise that addresses this, solves your issue (i think) and several others, and doesn't over tax support or the SG servers.

Cheers.

First of all, this is IMPOSSIBLE. To be removed from all groups that the user is connected to here on sg, sg would have to remove the user from all their groups on STEAM. Sg cannot kick/remove you from a group on steam!

No. Think of a user that has never logged into Steamgifts before. He can be a member of any groups over on Steam that he wants. You can add him to your group on Steam and he will NOT show up on your group page here. Try it, add a user to your Steam group that doesn't use Steamgifts. It won't affect your SG group page at all. The only way he shows up on your SG group page is if he has an account here on SG and sync's after you add him to your group.

And that is all that has to happen.. SG has to "pretend" that the person has never logged in here before. That is possible.

I don't think a group owner should have the ability to resync everybodys account (think of those shady groups with giveaways that force you to enter), but I do think a daily (or upon login each day) automated resync is very much needed.

I think the biggest part of the problem is that group membership doesn't sync right. I don't know if Steam or SG is to blame, but my SG-profile lists 3 groups I left ages ago (two of which don't even exist on Steam anymore).
