Payday was free, but i cant remember if it was winter or else.

That was two years ago. Thats the only time I know of that steam has given away a game for Christmas.

Actually it somehow never got to be big news so I suppose steam hasn't really gained much bad publicity for it. Therefore apart from a few consumers valve don't really have many people to aplogize to.
Pretty crap really cause i was hoping for a free game too.

back on christmas 2011 when there was the coal event, you had a chance to get a free game each time you crafted gifts.

the final prices were also huge.
btw, i'm not talking about $0.99 games. you could get very expensive stuff like valve complete and dota 2 (it was very valuable when the beta started), and more games from other devs but i can't remember now.

There were at least two massive free Steam giveaways, but for some reason I want to say there were more. Only because I seem to recall two times where Twitch chats were spammed with "guys, you can get GAME X for free on Steam now!", and neither for L4D2.

Depends on your definition of massive. They were giving away Oddworld, Vertiginous Golf and Amnesia in recent memory.

To my knowledge, It's not Valve who gave those away. Amnesia was given away by developers for example.

You're not wrong, but since they were Steam copies and Steam promoted and facilitated the giveaways, I'm sure Valve had a hand in it.

Huh? Is there something free right now? I got payday 2 for free from them before. But don't remember if it was winter.

I have a feeling the mystery cards are more important than expected. Just my hunch. That's why I made this thread: to know if Steam gave free games in the past during the winter event. I know gams were freely given out, bit I don't know when.

I really doubt that they're going to have some secret even that will only be revealed at the end of the sale, that'd be just poor business practice.
And the thing about the mystery cards is that they're revealed to reflect events and characters from the "Northpole Noir" comic, that otherwise would be spoilers.
You know, the comic nobody is reading and most people, including myself, forgot that is there? Yeah, that one.

I remember L4D2 and Payday the Heist, but I don't remember anything else. I'm sure they were giving a free game every winter though. They probably decided to stop it.

there's several games that given away this year; Race The Sun, Abe's Oddysse, Amnesia : The Dark Descent. perhaps i forgot the other free stuff or i missed it, but there's no free games this winter i guess

They usually had events that gave away free games and then they'd usually give away a token Valve game or Valve skin/hat nonsense or substantial discounts like 90-99% off. The last major one was three years ago with their holiday coal event and you could get some pretty good games from it and quite a few publishers participated. After that they were in full-blown incompetent mode and tried doing gems but implemented it extremely stupidly.
There were summer events as well that were more than just discounts. Basically, once Valve got over the hump with Steam and proved that Origin, uPlay, GoG and such were not a threat, didn't convert a lot of users and basically didn't sell nearly as well on their own platform as they did on Steam, they stopped caring and only count their money in between ill-conceived ventures like everything they've done, basically.
The joke is on them because more and more are switching to GoG for obvious reasons. If they're not going to cater to the community (this does not mean free games, just worthwhile community events they used to do VERY well) then we might as well get games that for all intents and purposes we OWN and don't have to worry about a flaky company unlocking should they ever shut down or get hacked/compromised. Which seems increasingly possible every time they try to update their backend.

To my knowledge GOG doesnt hold any events though
Maybe sales and thats about it
