Why my Steam profile has ribbons on it?

Yesterday I noticed that above my steam profile picture I have two ribbons on it. I first thought it is the work of enhanced steam but I seen the same thing from my steam client. I checked my friends profile but their profile seems normal. Can anyone explain this phenomena?

Yeah, this is correct. I just finished crafting the Christmas badge. Before crafting it my profile had no ribbons, after crafting they appeared.

The ribbons look beautiful compared to the garlands. Ugh. Do you get that for having a level 2 holiday sale badge?

Oh lol I thought the hideous white box was your own highlight in a screenshot but I see it's a Steam thing.

Are Valve just trying to see how fugly they can make Steam without driving people off? Some sick social experiment?

Thats not a bad idea by itself, but it looks very cheap (the auction-profile from last year was MUCH better done) and its stange that they dont really advertise it.

The sale seems half-assed by Valve. I wasn't even sure if purchaces would give cards as in previous sales. Had to dig up that information when it is usually stated clearly from front page link.
