Edit: We have a companion topic for Arkham Origins players! Woo-hoo, inspiring people! \^__^/

This year this series of mine was close to being a total failure, but hey, maybe this one will generate more than 2 entries…

So, I have acquired a nice Humble gift link for a copy of Batman: Arkham Knight, Premium Edition. And I am going to send it to someone who is likely to play it, despite its… numerous and substantially-sized shortcomings.
How will I know the recipient is likely to play it? Simple. I am putting this game up as a whitelist-only giveaway. Said whitelist is now empty and once this giveaway is finished, it will be empty again.
To get on my whitelist for this short time, all you need to do is to link me your achievements page of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City (yeah, fuck Origins, plus I know many people skipped it, so it would probably needlessly filter out even more entrants) showing that you earned the following achievements before 2018-06-16:

  • Perfect Knight At least half of the achievements (24/47) for Asylum, including the story completion one (Bigger Bang)
  • Perfect Knight - Day 2 At least half of the non-DLC achievements for City (25/50), including the story completion one (Exit Stage Right)

Simple, ain't it? And if you wonder why the achievements that ask the players to grind out the most boring challenge maps en masse, then you haven't seen what the gameplay of Knight consists of.

Once you check out, I put you on my whitelist, upon which you can immediately see the giveaway running for the game.
The giveaway lasts until 2018-06-24 15:00 UTC, you can apply until two hours before this deadline.
I will not respond individually, I will just drop the names at the end of this post. If you see your name there but not the giveaway, message again, I may have misclicked.
Also, I do sleep sometimes, so expect delays. =)

Oh, and don't apply if you own the base game of Arkham Knight. I did not pay this money so you can get a bunch of skins, thank you.

Added so far:
eldar4k, kwagmire, miroe250, juhaszandor, Madosi, terminatorOST, Cole420, revilheart, KOTx666, igel2005, putaquepariuotestcas, filmgoerjuan, Tuknar, CaptainMcCalvo, NoctisSama, Svipur, rogii, Aldo73, MRLW, RayRayRay, alvr, Thexder, Csiki, SoulNibbler, MindKiller66, jbondguy007, MeeMesmo, Neona, XBladeFeR, Cygone, Calles, Illuskan, RegularAddict, kalih0ra, PeacefulAnarchy, Jakobolus, Arthur13, Zanzarina, LagiNatoRRR, TheChack, xymjak, Graved

And it has ended. Thanks everyone who participated. :) The list is now empty again, hopefully next time we can have this much activity with the next game.

As someone who has already played all 4 of the main games (yes, Origins counts, and it has a better plot than the rest) I honestly think that you're playing these games wrong if you go for completion, you're turning a pretty good experience into an unbearable chore, these titles are filled with superfluous distractions meant to pad the playtime.
Yeah, I did come to the thread to complain about something that doesn't affect me, this is one of the few franchises I have strong opinions about.

I agree, but considering the "real" ending of Knight is the one that unlocks after you grind out all the chorefest side-content, I'd rather give it to someone crazy enough to do it than to someone who zooms through the core quest line and won't touch pretty much most side stuff or DLCs.
On a related note, the Robin challenge maps in City can blow me and I really hope that whoever designed them will suffer for a very long time in the worst pits of whatever Hell they believe in. I spent over 5 hours of my life getting the GCPD Extreme ones alone.
(Yeah, the core plot of Origins was really good. Gameplay mechanics, animations, its ridiculously anachronistic and lore-contradicting stuff, and the dialogues were not. Many of them were worse than some clichéd supervillain monologues in parodies. Which is funny, because City was probably the opposite, with a plot so dumb, it hurt. But the rest of it made up for this.)

I spent 44 hours in Knight and I wasn't even close to the "real" ending, so I just stopped playing while my overall opinion of the game was still positive and looked the thing online... kinda meh and the incomplete one fits better. I kinda feel like the devs crammed the game with filler just so the idea that Batman can't do everything by himself gets through to the player, it was one of the themes in the story after all.

You're talking about giving out a free Premium edition game, don't you think people will fake how much they want it for just to get a free game then maybe not even complete it without fully playing through it? Hard to judge on the internet what's real or not, just do a giveaway

I would like to point out the "getting them the day before I posted this" part. Unless you know a time machine or a way to hack Valve's databases for the dates, I find it interesting how you think they can fake the achievements.
And, just for the record, I do look at the times. :)

I'm glad I'm not alone. I've ruined a couple of games like this because of misguided attempts of showing respect of a gifted game. Joe Dever's Lone Wolf comes to mind. It's an excellent game the first playthrough but the slow combat animations are becoming truly painful the second and third time going through the same stuff and on top of this I have to make morally questionable choices to get some of the achievements. Just horrible game design but I guess it's a non-issue for people that play games disconnected from the story.

I'll go on record as saying that I extra-super-completed Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, and even Arkham Knight, because I genuinely enjoyed the gameplay, even the "more of the same" stuff. The only thing I'll cop to is not liking the protracted tank battles in Knight at all (or most of the other stuff associated with the Batmobile, for that matter), but that's the only concession made to sitting through gameplay that's not fun. So I guess I'm one of Axel's players who plays the game wrong, but that's fine. :-)

The minimum respect I'll show any game, including gifted ones, is 30 minutes of play to see if I'm interested in going on. And I have chucked some in the "not interested" bin after that, including wins, including even games that got great reviews -- there's too much good stuff out there to waste your time on playing things you don't enjoy, let alone to full completion.

I don't think it was intended to be read quite so categorical. It's not so subtly implied that it's "wrong" if you play to get the achievements despite not having much fun doing so. I know it's possible to complete even super grindy achievements while having fun as it happened without my intention in the game The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

Edit: I just noticed that HowLongToBeat suggests a median completionist time of 25h 28m which, to me, seem to have to involve some serious trickery considering the grindy achievement involves killing half a million mobs.

Even so, you half admitted to grinding at least one of them :P

But you are right. As long as one is enjoying oneself there's no wrong way of playing a game. I also have a feeling that your playstyle is more common than Axels and mine are

I grinded the tank battles because you have to, to see the entire main story, which was my main motivation. (Of course I can look things up on YouTube, but that's even less fun than sitting through some grinding, especially if you're already invested in the game and it doesn't look too far away). I had to do the other Batmobile stuff to catch the Riddler. Like, I can't just leave the Riddler out there, man, I'm Batman! :-)

In general I really do hate grinding if the gameplay isn't there to back it up. This is why I can't get through a good deal of JRPGs, because these are often overstuffed with boring, pointless battles for a few meagre XP, more so than I'm used to in Western RPGs. (There are exceptions, of course, on both sides of the fence.) There's only so much I'm willing to take to get my story progression rewards.

But yeah, the tank stuff was not fun and a grind to me. The challenge maps in Asylum and City were not, I really liked the challenges, even if it meant a lot of replaying some of them. Even so, I haven't done absolutely all maps in absolutely all configurations beyond Asylum, because that does feel like too much grind for too little reward.

I don't think "completionist" time in HLTB is about achievements, but about doing all the content in a single play-throughput.

While this sounds refreshingly sound to me, how would one know if one has done all the content?

Edit: Nevermind. It was easy enough to find out that completionist does indeed involve acquiring all available achievements

Its mostly what Spiff00 said, pushing yourself trough repetitive gameplay once the climax of the game has long passed seems counter productive to me, you're worsening your experience for the sake of some arbitrary "achievements" the devs sprinkled through the game to hook players for a little bit longer. It's fine if you are still enjoying it but I've seen people online admitting that they do it just to complete the game and get 100%.
I also think that the completion achievements are the most boring and uninteresting ones of the bunch, let me explain. The ones you get by just advancing the story are basically a simple recap and can be used to gauge player interest, the optional side-questy ones give you a reward for exploring other options, and the hidden / secret / fourth wall breaking achievements can expand the narrative in interesting ways. But the completion ones are just a "good, you did everything. Would you please leave already, there's no more content, go".

Yes, i understand. I beat each game 3 times, but first 2 times was from torrents. So it was relatively easy to complete them for 100%. Maybe that happened because my internet was bad and i played games largely when my connection was off? Does steam counts achieves properly without net connection?

My idling method before discovering the existence of dedicated programs for this purpose was to launch a bunch of games and let them run while away on business trips and whatnot. That's where the most of my "playtime" originates although I've played the game to some extent as well and I don't know why I don't have any achievements

Nah, it's just efficient achievement farming ;)

It's the extreme case of following an achievement guide to "beat" a game and it's quite common in my, admittedly limited, experience.

I agree it looks dubious, hence my winking smiley. Although I'm not particularly well informed when it comes to achievements and their inner workings I would think that if you connect after playing offline all the achievements you completed would show the same completed time. If they are stored by the game somehow. Maybe it works on a case by case basis though. I'm sure someone will be able to explain how things work

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Game-dependent. A handful of games can store the achievements you completed offline and dump them on Steam once you go online. Interestingly, Asylum and City are like that, but I think Origins and Knight are not.

I had an old laptop at the time i played Asylum, City and Origins. City was running smoothly and mostly without problem on default settings but Asylum had really bad FPS drops even on lowest settings. Had to give up completing it even though i was kind of a completionist back then.

I think my threshold for judging these games is low as I completed all four and enjoyed all of them. The only regret is that I kind of rushed with Arkham City and a bit with Asylum. The only thing that I found odd about Knight is that it has so much driving that at some point I felt like it was more like a driving game rather than a batman game.

I'll be curious to see all who ultimately qualify for this GA. I mean, I do, but I already own Knight, and I expect most other people who'd qualify to do too. :-)

The only achievement I'm still "missing" in my collection is "I Am The Night", which you get for completing Origins without dying once (and you can't even attempt it until you complete NG+). The problem here is not so much the difficulty (though it is no doubt difficult), but the tedium of playing the game three times, while dodging the various points where a game-breaking bug can tank your run. I'm still going to try it one day, but I don't think I have saves anywhere, so it really does mean playing it three times again... Good thing that's not a requirement for this GA.

Oh, and bump for Batman, of course.

Bundle deal hunters. Asylum, City, and Origins were all in affordably cheap packs, but Knight had the lowest price of 5 bucks thus far, which is still high enough for some to not bother with it.

Sure, but when you intersect that with the people who liked both games enough to go for full completion*... Although I suppose you might also hold off on it because you don't expect your rig to run it well, or you never looked back after the disastrous launch, or you played the hell out of the first two games even though you don't like Batman that much because you're just looking to get the most out of every game.

*: almost full, you can get Perfect Knight Day 2 without doing absolutely everything.

Nice idea for the giveaway and all, but these are some quite harsh requirements.

How many people would like Batman so much to 100% both games (1.9% got the achivement in Asylum and 1.3% in City), but not enough to buy Arkham Knight, when its Premium Edition is available for less than 5€ in the grey market?

There was a true ending to City? Who knew. Unless I had already done it anyway, as far as I know what happened - happened. Canonly.

I actually got kind of bored with Asylum & City... Took me forever to even get around to playing them, but then did pretty quickly against each other. Haven't met requirements for City (22/64), some simple ones I could do, I guess. I just felt like posting. :P

Asylum
City

Asylum I actually did spend some time on the Riddler challenges and such, didn't exactly find either game "hard" (though didn't try Hard difficulty), more... repetitive. They didn't "pull" me in and actually make me want to finish the extras. In part, I suppose, I already started to detest City after the first Flight challengers. It took me a good hour trying to do, the third I think, on top of the cranes.

Funnily, I still remember how both stories played out. Was only early last month but still.
Story wise, I'd like to see how it plays out next, maybe one day. I usually end up replaying the originals before a sequel. Did for Witcher 3 when got that on PS4, played 1&2 on PC first. Had it sat still sealed for like a month.

Knight has an alternate ending, City has only one.
Everyone hated that top-of-the-crane AR challenge, don't worry. I spent over an hour trying to do the tunnel one too. Even to this day, it takes me half a dozen tries at least to do it.
