Sure, if you don't plan on ever playing any of the newer games on pc.

I recently switched to Windows 8.1 and I am not entirely happy with it.
It freezes ocasionaly, 2 days ago whole system just froze when bascicaly being idle and reset my overlock setting ( Was stable for 5 months before on W7). There were some driver issues, but I managed to fix them with a bit of fiddling around.
I'd say you should go with WIndows 7, its proven it works great on every machine basically. Windows 8 on the other hand not so much, when it works it works great, but those problems are a bit too common to make up for it with optimizations W8 brought.

how can you be forced to use a certain OS?
slap win7 on it...

Why do you think 8 is not an option? Did you even try it? Most games work better on windows 8 than on 7.

Don't want to make another thread I want to try linux so which distribution would you guys recommend?

If you want to learn a lot, install gentoo.
For the Windows issue, use anything that your games require. Preferably 32bit as it doesn't eat that much space. When you get the install/reboot cycle done, backup that windows partition from linux. Windows will bitrot quite fast, so the backup comes in hand when reinstalling every once in a while.

Of course, one does not simply install gentoo. In order to do so, you must perform this ritual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjGSMUep6_4

few games (more in the future, i would think) require 64bit OS

Try Linux Mint, get the version with Cinnamon desktop if you want a Windows feel.

You guys can't read or what? My pc can't run any other system than Vista due to hardware restrictions. There are NO 7/8 drivers, only Vista drivers

+1
when 7 came around for testing and so on i was on board and had to use vista drivers, nevar had a problem with older hardware.

Investigate a bit, I'm sure you'll be able to install Windows 7 on it.

Go with some version of 7. I've been fine with Home Premium 64 bit. That seems to be the overall best for running games.

Windows 7 is compatible with Vista drivers in most cases, and even so, most drivers would be supported under the newer operating system. Depending on the device most basic components such as CPU, motherboard, basic chipset components, optical drive, hard disk, RAM, will not care what operating system you have. In fact, many of the times when there are not forward iterations of drivers it is because the operating system has integrated driver support for the device (some printers, but not all, peripheral devices like controllers, etc.). If you have a question I can see if that particular component matters, and if the RAM or other component is the bottleneck, you should be able to run Windows 7 anyway because it's more efficient. The change in minimum specifications was because of a change in standard (Windows 7 minimum performance is better than Windows Vista minimum performance).
Windows 8 is a slightly different story. If there are devices that may not work with the transition, because 8 uses a very different kernel base than Vista/7. Windows 7 is more reliably compatible with Vista.

Last time I installed 7 my pc was a bsod fest every day until my motherboard burned, so no, I don't feel like taking any risks

Wish I could, but even if I use the pc the most, it's still a family pc, and we share it, so I can't fiddle with it too much, my parents barely know how to turn it on and off and navigate the web

your parents need a tablet computer (either android or ios)
if they don't know how to use it (and are not willing to learn), then they shouldn't use it at all.

Well, my pc has been crawling in shit for a while, and it desperately needs to get a nice format. But the problem is, being an Acer, which is factory configured with bad hardware, I'm forced to stick with Windows Vista.
Now, I know there are a handful of different versions, and considering I mostly use the PC for games and surfing the web, which one you think it would be the best?
Edit ---> MUST READ! My pc hardware IS RESTRICTED TO WIN VISTA, SINCE THERE ARE NO DRIVERS FOR OTHER VERSIONS OF WINDOWS. I'm just asking which version of Vista works better, that's all
