Yep I should avoid names starting with K, they sound rude (Disclaimer: well rude is not the word, but my English vocabulary is pretty short. Maybe it would be better saying it doesn't sound in a melodic way. Also please I hope nobody feel offended for that, it is only a marketing thing)

None taken lol. And I think he wants to keep the first name so Karlous with a K it is

Then I like LittleBibo1's idea, using Karlous as a surname.
Kukeemon's idea is great also, using Karl. It is short so it is easy to pronounce

Yeah it seems like a couple people here feel the same so I'll definitely make sure to run that by him and see what he thinks

skip the "-ous", makes it sound like a joke name.

Karl, good old Karl. Remember Karl Marx, Karl May? Both well-known writers with a legacy.

Karl Murdock has a fantastic ring to it, strong beginning, strong end. Great symbolism too.

+1 for Karl instead of Karlous (just for reasons of marketability/accessibility) -- "Karlous" in the book jacket bio would be cool though.
Voted for Shaw. Blackwell sounds too pretentious unless you're a magician.

Thanks for the feedback! It seems like a couple people like Karl, so I'll let him know, see what he thinks.

I have to echo LittleBibo1 that if you keep Karlous, it might sound better as the surname. Just something to consider.
The only name I don't like there is Gannon.

The others have two syllables in each part of the name and seem slightly off because of it. Karlous Shaw feels better on the tongue, but Karlous Blackwell has that little bit of a hollywood flash to it, that would perhaps work better as an actual protagonist name, heh.

Shorter and simpler is probably better from a marketing standpoint. It lets you make the name bigger on the cover, and is easier to say. Look at alot of the best selling books in the genre and compare covers of long names vs. short names and see which you like better.

And for a pen name I was going to suggest Bic. So Karlous Bic? ;=)

You're right, that's a really good point, and it would have slipped past my mind if you hadn't brought it up, so thanks!

I've designed some book covers (just freelance, I'm no pro), but it's generally easier to work with short names from a design perspective. Longer names can limit design options. Not terrible, but just something to consider. Sometimes it's difficult to find a font that works well for longer names. Thrillers usually use the big bold fonts which makes it sometimes difficult to fit alot of letters across the face of the book at large enough size.
