Anyone know if older C&C games like Red Alert/Red Alert 2/Tiberian Sun have been released digitally? I wasn't able to find em on Steam/GOG/Origin.

Yes, they have been. There was even a very nice bundle with all of them for one price. (Command and Conquer The Ultimate Collection). It's $20 at Amazon, with Origin redemption, but it goes on sale a lot. I got it for $10 2 years ago, and I think I've seen it for even less since then. It contains 17 games in the franchise, from the original through to C&C4: Tiberian Twilight.

You should be able to pick it up at Origin or get a code for it from Amazon or other sellers.

It actually comes down to 5$ during sales on Amazon, what is quite a bargain for C&C fans.

It's for sale on amazon for 4.99$ very often. I bought it 2 times with 6 months inbetween(bought a copy for a friend). So if you are ok to wait up to 1-2 months you surely can get it for that price. Last time it was that price was last week i think.

Waiting isn't a huge deal, this is more a nostalgia trip. I probably put in hundreds and hundreds of hours on RA2 back when I was younger

The amazon pack is great, but it's not optimalized too well. Look for custom launchers online, with those my Red Alert 2 games are working just fine, otherwise they were running too fast and were unplayable.

CnC + Red Alert and Tiberum Sun have all been released by EA for free.

However I'd honestly recommend OpenRA http://www.openra.net/

Currently it supports Tiberium Dawn, Dune, and Red Alert. Upcoming support for Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Sun. It adds in a few good features as well such as making infantry frankly useful and less of cannon fodder.

Personally I didn't get the point of that, as the campaign isn't finished.

This is awesome news! Now, if they would only bring back Westwood...

I afraid that if they brought back Westwood, it would a shambling corpse of it's former self. Much like Rare nowadays, actually. Rare has none of its original staff and only make glorified shovelware for the Kinect. Do you really want Westwood to end up like that? I'd rather Westwood stay dead.

Ha! Fair point. I suppose all the rumors about a C&C Generals sequel will stay rumors. I have to say though, in some cases, bringing back old teams can be done successfully (inxile and wasteland 2). Maybe if it was unaffiliated with EA, they might have a shot....but that would never happen :/

Star Wars Empire at War which was pretty damned good then a shit load of crap and now Grey Goo which has a terrible title but apparently is meant to be good.

Universe at War was good... If you could put up it being stuck with the terrible, thankfully dead Games For Windows Live... And the crashes.

I'll just add, that:

  1. I recommend OpenRA as well, if you're interested in skirmish games and MP. Note however, that the aim of the authors of OpenRA isn't to replicate the original game, just make an "improved" version of it. For single player, googling the games should return results, that will allow playing all the games on modern operating systems.
  2. Red Alert 2 has been released as freeware as well, (and strangely, it wasn't mentioned in this thread.)

Command and Conquer 1, Red Alert 1 and Tiberium Sun are all freeware. You can download them for free.

Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert 1 and Tiberian Sun are freeware and there is an "Ultimate Collection" which contains every game and expansion.

Note that most websites I've seen remove the cutscenes to cut down on download times. If you care about the cutscenes,
you should check the directories of the games for "MOVIES.MIX" files and look for replacements if you can't find them.

The Ultimate Collection versions don't suffer from this problem, thankfully. But they have, in their usual EA brand of incompetence, removed the ability to play mods in Tiberium Wars and Red Alert 3.

I've been unable to get tiberian sun to play on any of my newer computers, even with the set.It was my favorite game too.

If you have Windows 8, then google "moddb Tiberian Sun Windows 8 fix (at high resolution)".
The first result is what worked for me.

http://redalert1.com/ should get you one of them, working with win7 and a slew of customization-options. There's also linux and mac versions available but haven't tested. Best of all: it's free. :)
