My Current Laptop Sucks Compared (Acer Aspire 7745) to the rest of the universe, And I plan to get a new desktop soon, as it would obviously be better. I do not have a limit on budget, just do not want to waste any money. So, lay it on me!

  • I game a LOT, so the GPU should be good. (Nvidia maybe?)

  • Should have Windows 8 (Maybe because it is up to date?)

  • Other stuff too, just forgot them :P

  • 1 or 2 Screens, each almost certain at 1920x1080.

  • Examples of some games I have right now:

  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2

  • Just Cause 2 (Can't even play it on this :I )

  • Portal 2

  • LOTS of powerful games, planning on getting both humble bundles.

  • I WANT to play at the highest settings, but remember: gaming is not the only thing I will do, and speed is wanted around here.

Any thoughts?

Mine's going to be this.

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570k
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77-DS3H
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB 1600MHz DDR3
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 2TB
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 120M
GPU: Club3D HD 7870 XT jokerCard
Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W

Roughly ends up at around £800 odd and should last for a good few years without even upgrading.

I suppose this is as good a topic as any to ask. Which is better for gaming? Windows 7 or 8? Don't care about the desktop, I can adapt, just the performance. I'm figuring 8. I've heard it's faster than 7 and there might be a new DirectX for it that 7 doesn't get.

I hear Windows 8 is smoother, boot up is milliseconds, and gaming is a little better. Good if built in. As an upgrade, probs should have gotten it when Pro was 29.99.

It's a new PC, so fresh install. Only issue is, all I can see anywhere is what's marked as upgrade discs. Do those work for fresh installs? Because I don't remember the last time a Windows OS was only £50.

Might do that, but I suppose I should have been clearer. I was asking if full discs even exist because I haven't seen a single one.

You mean this?
This too.
(These are the Pro versions. If you want the normal version, tell me.)

I have W8 pro keys from school (In Engineering so MS gives me all the tools) but those keys are considered "MAK" Keys for "Volume" editions and do activate fresh installs but my friend who did buy upgrade version from MS to fresh install could NOT activate his windows 8. Yes its stupid but he was unable to because its an "Upgrade" key. He had to buy W8 pro systems builder edition from Newegg to activate his computer.

Just word of caution if you do buy just the upgrade key for fresh install.

The upgrade key is for older versions of Windows. That means you should not be able to use upgrade key for maybe Linux, or one with no OS.

You should tell us what kind of games you're looking to play, as that will give the community a good idea of the kind of computer needed to run your games smoothly. also, are you looking for a 3D setup? multiple monitor setup?

I just got this pc, and will tell you what I would have changed.
For $1,166.76 usd

  • 1 x Intel Core i7 3770K Unlocked Quad Core Hyperthreading Processor LGA1155 3.5GHZ Ivy Bridge 8MB Retail [lovin' this baby]
  • 1 x ASUS P8Z77-M Pro mATX LGA1155 Z77 DDR3 SLI 3PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 SATA3 HDMI DVI USB3.0 Motherboard [any pro Z77 board will be fine here]
  • 1 x Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10 8GB 1X8GB DDR3-1600 CL10-10-10-27 240PIN Single Memory Module
  • 1 x ASUS GeForce GTX 660 OC DirectCU 1020MHZ 2GB 6.0GHZ GDDR5 2xDVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Video Card [660ti would be a better choice than mine]
  • 1 x OCZ Agility 3 120GB 2.5IN SATA3 Sandforce SF-2281 SSD Solid State Disk Flash Drive [I wanted a vertex4, would order that instead if I could do it again.
    ]
  • 1 x Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro REV.2 CPU Heatsink Cooler LGA1366 LGA1155 LGA1156 AM2 AM3 w/ 92MM Fan [really doesn't matter, no need to spend more than $30 on your heatsink until you're buying L2N]
  • Whatever mid size case you think looks sweet/fits your budget.
  • Any 80+ powersupply 600w is more than enough. I grabbed 700 in case I want to SLI some more cards later.

Edit: It was $1450 after shipping/insurance and windows 8.

i5 for gaming, K if you go overclocking, wich is only recomended with a decent ammount of knowledge and experience, AT LEAT a third generation processor, but i would wait Haswell as the friend above mentioned, even if you go buy a 3rd Gen, when 4th gen hit the shelves, 3rd Gen price will drop. Basically, no wis not the time to buy a processor.

For the video card, the new Nvidia GTX 770 is a viable option, the price is in the range of the high end ATI ones, but still, i would go with a HD7890 atleast....

Ram 8gig DDR3 @ 1600 is good enough at the current game requirements
Atleast 1 SSD for SO and heavy games, i would go with atleast a 128GB one

Another HD for actual storage..

The Motherboard goes with what you choose above... one with overclocking if you choose a processor with a K in the name, that supports the ammount and speed of the memory and so on.... Check the Gigabyte brand, they have som elow cost good mobos...
