Nope. I played games for 8 years on the Pentium 4 trying to squeeze as much FPS out of Mass Effect 2 on medium as I could until I finally caved and built a new PC. It's odd because even though I can, I still don't run most games past medium/high anyway.

I have a fairly decent computer (cod, fallout, other stuff on max. newer stuff on medium-high). I felt really emasculated when when i couldnt play Far Cry 1 (2004) on maximum. I think now its on all medium or something.

Battlefield 3 is to play with all settings in low (and no, i'm not trolling). The graphics looks "barely" the same and you get way more FPS, you should try it.
Related to your thread, only in the last year i had the good feeling of playing almost every game maxed out without lag so i know how it feels to have a crappy pc for gaming.

Before I built my current machine, I had an Acer Aspire T180. I could barely play games from the mid-2000s at their lowest settings. Fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago, bought Hitman Absolution, whacked the settings up to max and ran the benchmark. Turned them down a few notches and it was still beautiful so no biggie.

Nope. IN SWBF2 it always has these sound spikes like "Inco com com com com com Incoming" yet I still enjoy playing it. Got a great graphics card though (because I couldn't run certain stuff).

My first 3D glasses supported a few DOS games, but these games (e.g., Shattered Steel, Descent) dropped the resolution from 640x480 to 320x200 when playing in 3D, which made the game experience a lot worse. That was my most disappointing "can't run on max settings" moment.

you guys are complaint that you cant run Battlefield 3 on Ultra? Well im complaint that i cant run game like Left 4 Dead 2 on Low with 640x480 and have a good framerate :/ next time when youy complaint about your pc thin about the peopls with much older PCs and the peoples that dont even have PCs! Be thankfull for what you got becouse it could be worst!

I'm only disappointed when the game's optimization sucks and I still can't get 30 frames per second on low settings. My laptop's GPU is entry level to gaming but I get a steady 30 in Skyrim at 720p ultra textures and max draw distances (without the fancy stuff) but the lowest settings on Saints Row: The Third only nets me 20-25. What gives?!

I think that as of now the only thing i cannot really max out is crysis 3, but i see no problem in that.

(2011) Decided to buy Battlefield, tried out max settings, unplayable, realize I'm too poor to buy a new computer. Anyways, doesn't matter to me, Battlefield 3 looks sexy on any setting =P (sour grapes).
