"When you think of the best Metroidvania games, a few obvious candidates come to mind. Hollow Knight, Ori, Tunic, Blasphemous – perhaps even newcomer Animal Well. But for the Castlevania die-hards, there’s only one real choice: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the spiritual successor helmed by Castlevania series producer Koji Igarashi himself. Now, the exceptional action platformer is about to get even better with a new story DLC coming very soon.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of the Belmonts or a complete newcomer, I’d argue that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a must-play for any fans of classic-styled Metroidvania games. Its stunning environments, rich host of weapons ranging from the everyday to the experimental and extraordinary, and smart non-linear progression that ratchets up to frankly ridiculous power levels by the climax make it a real standout in the genre, as proven by its Steam user review score of 94%.

Bloodstained Ritual of the Night DLC Classic II: Dominique’s Curse launches on Tuesday June 11, 2024 via Steam. You’ll need to own the base game to play it."

When I think of the best Metroidvania games I think of Rabi-Ribi and The Messenger actually (and then Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Shantae).

Yeah, I know its a quote but screw that idea that we're supposed to hail the most popular ones as "the best".
And it's not like anyone else is saying anything. XD

I whole heartedly agree with you, to me Iconoclasts and Gato Roboto are the best metroidvanias I've played. This idea that the most popular ones have to be the best is kinda BS.
That said Bloodstained is really good.

Ah crap. It's classic Castlevania inspired DLC. I hate stairs in those games...

Considering Koji Igarashi, both games are basically Castlevania. :)

Ehh, Igavanias only start from SotN so anything before that can't really be considered having his touch. Plus aside from SQ that was the proper start of castlevania shifting to metroidvania genre.

Almost all the castlevanias before that were extremely punishing platformers, and the stairs were the worst parts in them especially in some of the earliest ones.

Fair enough. :)
I didn't play the old Castlevanias but I do played games that didn't even have checkpoints, so I know the pain.

XD

Perfectly captures the pain, if I'm honest.

Since we're talking about Metroidvanias, I recommend this one that I played not long ago.

Looks nice, but seems a bit short though, people reviewing them with 6 hours.

It took me 11 hours to 100% There are a few achievements that take a while to complete and a boss rush after you finish it.
