Hello there! The games I wanted to buy on this sale (steam squad and hard west) are not at the discount I am looking for, so I'm looking for something else (mostly TBS under 7 euro). Any suggestions?

tomb raider one and two

Which one would you buy?

View Results
Atlantic Fleet
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel
Invisible, Inc.
Kyn
MASSIVE CHALICE
Royal Bounty HD
Satellite Reign
Shadowrun: Hong Kong - Extended Edition
Silent Storm Gold Edition
Skyshine's BEDLAM
Transistor
Xenonauts

Transistor should be a good RPG
Silent Storm is a WWII XCOM for me (in positive meaning)
Xenonauts is more like the old X-COMs
Satellite Reign should go in same direction, but I don't know yet xD
no idea about the rest

Xenonauts clearly has everything I am looking for, but I could buy 2 or even 3 other games with that money. What do you mean with Silent Storm is a WWii X-COM? Does it have anything else to offer than the tactical combat?

I meant it like turn-based, has different classes, shit ton of weapon, fixed amount of characters with perma-death (more forgiving in easier difficulties, where they only go unconscious and don't bleed out), but sometimes frustrating and unforgivable combat (running into a interception and get a MG salve to your fucking face). Never finished tho, cause from the middle you have to deal with OP bullshit (no spoilers), but I kinda enjoyed it in my time.

Satellite Reign is a good game, but it's not a TBS, it's an RTS with pausing. It's fun co-op, though, so that's a plus.

Well, I said mostly TBS. Similar, but action-oriented games with pause or slow mo (like BG or even Dungeon Siege) are fine.

If that's the case, I'd recommend Satellite Reign and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Both are great cyberpunk games.

Go for Shadowrun HK for a fun 20+ hours of TB combat and ... reading.. lots and lots of reading.

I finished the first two and I know more or less what to expect. While they have good amount of content, the gameplay is not very challenging.

I'm not surprised, George Lopez really did a number on them.
But srsly, I'm not familiar with steam turn based strategy, sorry

I haven't played the majority of these but Fallout Tactics: BoS uses an engine from Fallout 1 and 2 and turns it into real time (with the option of keeping it turn based). Overall, it is a pretty weak entry. It was optimized for the real time portion. It is tough to play through it turn based sadly.

Well, that's kind of disappointing to hear. Thanks for the feedback!

Have you played Skyshine's Bedlam? Anything you can say about the gameplay? Repetitive? Complex? etc

Satellite Reign isn't turn based

Transistor is really great, but a bit short, though there is NG+

Shadowrun: Hong Kong - Extended Edition is good, but the gameplay is getting repetitive, still pretty much the same than the 2 previous games.

I haven't played the others but Invisible, Inc. seems really great.

I know that it isn't turn based, but as I said earlier, action-oriented such games with pause or slow mo are also fine (from BG to even Dungeon Siege). Any other such games I don't know about in the price range? :D

Valkyria Chronicles™

UnderRail, this is a bit over 7€ (but so is Satellite Reign) but it's great.

If you don't mind permadeath, Dungeons of Dredmor is fun and it's really cheap, you could get in in addition of a 4-5€ game for example.

Another cheap one is Paper Sorcerer, though it's a bit different from what you want since it's a dungeon crawler, and the interface can be a bit clunky.

Finally, you might you want to give Card Hunter a try sometime if you haven't done so yet, it's free to play and it's really fun.

fallout tactics is completely different to fallout 2, but it's great on its own. it's not meant to be a rpg with dialogue options, it's just a squad tbs/ realtime combat game.
way more complete and with more content than invisible inc or shadowrun.

yeah, i'd pick fallout tactics. :3

Earlier a person said that it's frustrating to play it as a TBS. Thoughts on that?

frankly I didn't even know this fallout game existed before seeing it on Steam

Fallout Tactics can be a bit slow in turnbased mode, as there can be a lot of enemies that need to do their moves

it gets annoying when enemies spot you from the other side of the map and start taking cover or running. anyway, the game has a hybrid system where you can move in real time and enter turns when you want, that helps a lot.

Not frustrating, just slow as hell. Once you set it to real-time, you realise that your efficiency either doesn't drop or even increase, and also that the game is a helluva lot faster like that. For first-time players it is usually suggested to switch around halfway through, when you have at least the first power armour, but on subsequent tries you can learn that with real-time combat, it is surprisingly easy to solo the entire game—minus the only defence/escort mission. (Despite the whole thing being supposedly balanced around six-character squads.)

I only played Transistor out of those and I highly recommend it. As others have said, it is kinda short but it has replayability due to the variety of skill combinations you can use in combat.

Xenonauts. Turn-based tactics like XCOM though. (Since it is the actual XCOM remake, only an unofficial one.)

Invisible Inc. is more like a stealth game, whereas the Shadowruns and Satellite Reigns are RPGs. All are good games though. Transistor may fit into this category, but it is closer to being a turn-based action game.
FO:Tactics is a lot like the modern XCOM, only set in the Fallout world, enjoying its semi-canon status (elevated by Fallout 3, it was non-canon for almost a decade). It is literally unlike any other Fallout game before or after it in terms of game mechanics (and to a degree, story).

Alright, thank you! Would you rather buy Xenonauts or Fallout tactics + Silent Storm?

Xenonauts. FO:T isn1t really that great and it always had technical issues that just got worse with newer Windows editions. And while it is a matter of personal taste if Silent Storm or Xenonauts is the better squad-based tactical game (as one has a strategy layer, the other has an RPG-like system), I think Xenonauts has a much longer life expectancy thanks to its semi-random levels (that are promised to enter a more random status as the game's development continues with patches).

Ok, thank you! I wishlisted it.
Price is right, graphics are on point - does it have anything else to offer than the tactical combat? (ex: travel the map and take quests or manage your party or whatever)

It's basically a Telltale game with TBS elements, haha.
Joking aside it's about the journey and the story, there's a lot of decision making involved, then you have to manage your party, level them up, buy them items, manage ressources, and then there's the battles. It's a great game.

I would recommend against Massive Chalice. It's more like Massive Disappointment ;)

Silent Storm is good. Not too expensive either. Be prepared for a challenge if you get it (it's kinda sequel, Hammer & Sickle, is even harder, but not on steam).
Fallout Tactics is also quite good. It uses the same basic rule system as Fallout 1 & 2, but being squad based, it makes better use of it (in my opinion). Challenging, fun & rewarding. It also lets you pick between real time combat, or two types of turnbased (initiative based, where everyone moves in initiative order, or where everyone moves all their units, and then it's the opponent's turn).
The Shadowrun series is also very good. These are shorter games, so if money is a big concern, I would recommend against them, but they are also more tightly designed. They are closer to pure CRPGs than TBSs though.

HK is the only Shadowrun game I didn't play, so I know what to expect. Good content, but I wish for a more challenging gameplay.
Now I am thinking to buy Silent Storm and Fallout tactics.
What is the problem with Massive chalice? Reading the negative reviews of both games, I am more concerned about Transistor than Massive chalice to be honest.
Also, thanks for the reply!

Massive chalice lacks content & variety and gets repetitive really fast. Had it had more classes and more enemy types, plus more mission variety it would have been a fine game, as there's nothing really wrong with the core mechanics, but sadly without more of "everything" it just ends up being a game that's only fun for a handful of battles.

  • Xenonauts for me it's a sadly no. The clean ui, and the cold war lore is great, but everything else is meh. Better stick to original/reboot xcom defense.

  • I liked Silent Storm years back.

  • Bedlam Redux especially after the last update in which they added a new turn mode where actions need x points (more in the traditional ways) it's really good now.

  • ShadowRun, I only played the first reboot (Returns)version and it was good, the Dragonfall version is only $3 I think. Sounds interesting to me.

  • Atlantic Fleet looks really interesting and also cheap!

So, I would recommend you anything between SilentStorm, Shadowrun and Bedlam Redux. I would consider Atlantic Fleet though (Jane's Fleet Command is also with a heavy discount too -I think $1.50-) A bunch of other games you considered look more arpg's to me :|

I'm myself stuck deciding between Skulls of Shogun and Deadly Premonition xD
