Maybe a new Contributor level >Staff< when creating giveaways would be a nice, little bonus.
I can only see one potential problem with that but then again we already have Patreon status and I can't remember a single case where a Patreon acted as if above the law and expected preferential treatment.

Yeah... I don't see that happening.
As far as I understand the site has 3 sources of income:
- Advertising revenue: The problem with that is I assume SG mostly attacts above average tech-savvy users so I believe probably more than 80% are using Ad blockers. So that probably doesn't bring in a lot of money.
- Patreon donations: I have no idea how many patreons there actually are but I strongly doubt there are enough to sustain a regular salary for mods.
- Store credit from official SG referral: First of all that comes in the form of store credit not actual currency. So cg would have to sell games reseller style to turn it into actual money. Doing that he'd have to underbid those stores to make the offer attractive otherwise people would simply buy from those stores directly. And looking at the frequency of cg's giveaways, which I believe is where that money currently goes, again I doubt it amounts to much.
Maybe I'm completely wrong and SteamGifts is actually a gold mine π and cg is using his immense wealth to build a super villian lair in the Bahamas but I kind of doubt it.

The Patreons are around the money that is needed for paying the servers.
Of course we don't have exact server costs but this are assumed prices compared with other sources where we have the prices for the servers that are around the assumed stuff that sg has.
And i think you assume wrong with the low refferral income. HB pay 5% of the bundle prices as ref (if not different set) -and not in wallet-, i assume other stores do around the same %.
Calculate by yourself how much that adds up with all the shop ref that get automatic generated when you visit one from a discussion.
But of course we don't know it....
