Well, to be honest most things in the forum doesn't bother me expect trading.
Comment has been collapsed.
I haven't seen trading going on here in a while... the last I saw it was 3 weeks ago and never after that... so what are you going on about?
Comment has been collapsed.
Sub-forums have been suggested for months now. When suggestions are given regarding the forums, sub-forums is usually the number one requested feature that I've seen. Especially in the chat a few weeks ago.
How would people feel about a "members only" forum or gifter-only forum? Maybe people with a couple successful giveaways can view? I don't think anything should be comment based because that just drives up worthless comment spam.
Comment has been collapsed.
Most CD-Key sites should not be allowed in the forums, as most of them are not authorized resellers. We should keep it as legal as possible.
I don't get why people would get angry about you posting your DJ page. I think that's totally fine. Stuff like that, or players blogs, or anything similar should be allowed.
Offers from legit websites should be allowed, trades should be done at SGS.
Comment has been collapsed.
SGS has a offer page too. If we are limiting trades from here we should also limit the offers information as well... I think the DJ stuff is fine too. I can't understand why we should be limiting anything form the forums though... If you go to any forum you will see a wide majority of topics (under their own subsections perhaps) that are posted. As long as it is nothing illegal, shady or against the SSA, it should be allowed.
Comment has been collapsed.
I would be ok with people posting trades, offers or link to their blogs, but only if there are some categories. Right now, the forum feels a little messy, with all the post, that are not related to Steamgifts.
On the first page there are 5 out of 25 posts (including sticky), which only lead to a blog of a certain member of this site. I really have no problem with him posting those links, but that's too much, considering that because of this, some more important threads disappear way faster.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm posting links to new articles for those who are interested. Is that wrong? Would it be wrong if the links would lead to different sites? Or another (not mine or my friend's) site?
Comment has been collapsed.
What would be the title? Topics vary quite a lot.
Also cg won't let to bump it, so it will go down the list, unless I will write new comments. Also the comments on what I write would be mixed.
Comment has been collapsed.
I haven't read your threads but to my understanding it's a blog about computer hardware, correct?
If so, then simply put that as the thread title.
If people are interested in said blog and topics relating they will go into the thread, and you can post all of your new blog entries in there.
Unless you find each entry getting a 100+ comments I wouldn't imagine it would get so crowded in one thread as to be unworkable.
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not 100+ (which is rare in the first place), but there's quite some comments. If comments could be off, people could discuss at my blog though, but then it would be less activity for this site - plus there would be no way of bumping it.
As for computer hardware topic - not always. It's hardware, gaming and trailers... At least recently. Might be screenshots, other content too later, and giving it a name like computer hardware and gaming would be quite misleading, in some cases - very misleading. :)
Btw, if you could think of a way to work around that, I'd be happy to do it, since new posts seem to irritate some people and a few kids.
Comment has been collapsed.
Because I don't have enough money to buy anything that costs more than 0.11€. I did some guest passes giveaways, but apparently they weren't very popular. Even received some hatred, as some people (or I think one guy?) thought it was only to advertise my blog...
Comment has been collapsed.
If they are being kept here, that means that they are commented on, which means that people like them, which logically makes them equal to any other post which is for discussion purposes.
Of course the linking part - I agree. But the story is here, same as any other thread, the only difference is that it links to some other page. But people still do discuss about it, ask questions, etc, as if it would be a "normal" topic.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm going to attest to this. I don't go into his threads and suddenly find myself on his blog. I go to his thread, see there is the option to open the link to his blog, and that's that. I cannot fathom why this is considered unacceptable or annoying here, given it's relevance. Not when people are posting links to youtube videos for the lulz.
Comment has been collapsed.
I feel that one guy is abusing this forum to gain pagerank for his own blog.
Also referral links used for commercial gain seem unfair, except the greenmangaming one where both get 5$.
Also what should not be allowed is any foreign language, english only.
Comment has been collapsed.
If by pagerank you mean visitors - then yes, I am trying to get more visitors than I have now. And as you can see - I don't have ads. So go figure why I'm doing it.
I also agree about foreign languages.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sub-forum for off topic so he can post to his blog there.
Deals for the best game deals at the moment.
Require if a referral link is given that a non-referral link is just as visible and close by for people to choose. People are more likely to share great deals if they can receive at least something small from doing so. And who knows what they earn might just go into a giveaway,
Depending if the language being only english would affect many people a sub-forum for other languages.
Comment has been collapsed.
See my comment above. I enjoy reading his blog - when the topic interests me. He doesn't have ads, there's nothing tracking me (no ad servers or the like), and I can take his review as I like it. So aside from actual, honest-to-God conversation, I can't see him "gaining" anything besides conversation material and input (gasp! ON THE INTERNET!!!) Abuse is a strong word. Unfair doesn't seem to be any better. None of these things shanghai you to some new URL. They've been open, completely transparent about where their links lead, and what they gain or lose from them. What's the big deal? Yeah, subforums make a place look nice and tidy. And they also tend to divvy up the website's population. Is it killing anyone to click the "next" or "page: 2" clicky? This forum isn't THAT busy. Not quite enough to warrant a half-dozen subforums, each with their own narrow visitor count. You people are just being OCD. Take a pill, chill out, and write an angry blog entry about how mean I am, while listening to Good Charlotte.
Comment has been collapsed.
sub forums would be a good way to seperate things. It doesn't bother me to see people posting stuff about their interests etc... having a non-game talk section would be perfect for that.
not to mention if it was possible to make it a more robust forum.
Comment has been collapsed.
Trading/Selling invites are not allowed, I guess you can't stop some assholes.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't particularly think sub forums are needed, as the forum is not very busy, and I think it would have a negative impact on fostering community to split things up. It's not like relevant topics are being buried every day.
But there probably should be some restrictions. While I get Mysterious wants to pimp his page, 5+ topics on the front page are excessive especially when his blog acts as little more than a middleman to the story people actually want to read. It's like with the greenmangaming posts. Most people post their referral link AND non referall link because it's the non-lame thing to do.
Comment has been collapsed.
I wouldn't say any of my reviews are a "middle-man" things. They are more like completely my things.
As for other things - I post links to an opinion, which is actually a "my" thing too, so technically - it's my thing. Not technically - it's a comment on something else, which is only partially middle-man...

"Game Director from Diablo 3 team defends the auction house by using private sites at which Diablo II items were being sold, which I would say is a good argument. I know that many will disagree with me though…
Also he talks about the new game difficulty – Inferno. That is a great idea, that way Diablo III will be interesting for a longer period of time than Diablo II was. I didn’t like the Battle.NET much, I don’t think I’ve played much of it. Maybe an hour or so… However, I played a lot of Diablo II. And I think the new difficulty is a great idea."
New difficulty is a good thing! Glad I read that. My point was, most people in your threads, they are there to discuss the articles or videos from other real sites that you are basically just linking too, and not your blog. If you for instance, had your own actual news, or interviews or videos, rather than just what other video game related websites are doing, I don't think anyone would have an issue. For instance, your Battlefield 3 topic is clearly just a cut and paste job, and most of your other "opinions" amount to what could be said in a Twitter, except maybe the hardware ones.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, as you noticed (or maybe not) I'm posting less of these 'short' opinions. Keep in mind that I started my blog not long ago, and so I have to try new things.
As for Diablo III - is there a difference where to watch the video - embedded from my YouTube channel on my site or my YouTube channel?
As for Battlefield - what exactly did you expect? Re-write the original source? That wasn't written by another site, that is an original source. Would you call the content of Valve's store pages a copy-paste, and rather posting a link to the original source?
Comment has been collapsed.
Or you could y'know, link to the website that actually did the content's website or youtube page. That is an option if you're actually wanting to discuss these topics.
As far as BF3, I'd have expected a link to EA's store or w/e press release it came from, or as you claim you are doing, an opinion on the DLC.
Comment has been collapsed.
So you are saying that it's okay to link as long, as I'm advertising someone else's website, but not mine while giving the same (or more - with an opinion and possibly more links) information?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yes, when you make a post where 100 percent of any actual content is directly lifted from gamespot, I'd prefer to just get taken to gamespot, oddly enough. If you get some actual content of your own on your site, cool beans, go crazy. But to take other people's work, even going so far as to reembed a video into your own youtube channel, is lame, at least if you're not going to do what you claimed to have done, which is offer opinions (no offense, but adding a new difficulty being a good idea is probably not something anyone needs to express, I don't think there's any "I want less difficulty options!" camps out there) or useful links (for instance, googling the BF3 topic you posted provided much better and more detailed info than you did, including pictures). For instance, to me a decent blog about the BF3 thing would've been to compare and contrast what places give you what bonuses, collecting all the info and providing it in a single convinent space.
Comment has been collapsed.
None of my posts took any content from Gamespot. The video for Diablo was downloaded from there, yes, but it was re-uploaded to my YouTube channel. Do you see a difference where to watch it - at GameSpot or at my blog? If you don't like my blog for some reason - it's your problem. Go find the same topic yourself and read it. To those who want information, it doesn't matter where to watch the same video.
Also, I suggest you actually going to my blog before shouting. All the content is mine, except trailers/videos and quotations (official content), which are allowed to be re-uploaded and quoted, and the same thing as other sites (even the big ones) do.
"I don't think there's any "I want less difficulty options!" camps out there" So you are saying that saying an opinion if it is the same as someone else's isn't worth saying? By that logic, 80-90% of the posts made by gaming sites would go down. As for BF3 - fine, Google it then. Who will want to read it - will read it. Who doesn't like my blog - will Google it or will skip it. It's no forcing for going into my blog, is there?
I really, really hate closed-minded people. They see something bad in one thing, don't do research, just go and shout. You might as well write emails to each one of gaming sites, including the same Gamespot, telling them that you don't like their posts because another site has posted something of the similar content.
Comment has been collapsed.
You sure like the word shouting, not sure where you're getting that from, and you're being pretty defensive. Yes, you did take content from Gamespot. There's nothing else in your post besides a video interview someone else did. I do see a difference, and alot of people do. Most people would rather give their views or w/e to the people that actually provided the interview.
I'm not here to express an opinion your blog as a whole (though glancing over I'd say most of my criticism still stands, as the VAST majority of interesting content is linked to other websites, or youtube videos you've decided to paste onto your channel) but the ones you are linking on the forum, I even gave you credit for the hardware ones (though I don't know much about the topic), so you need to stop being so easily offended, as I think I'm explaining why I dislike your linking far more politely than some people are. I don't comment in your topics, but this is a thread designed around opinions about what we want to see in the forums, which is why I brought it up.
Comment has been collapsed.
So now you're picking on my speech manners? Interesting. Seems like you're running out good arguments to pick at something about me. And yes, I am defensive, and you are offensive. You are attacking my blog and me, and I am defending my blog and myself from you. Seems pretty logical, doesn't it?
If you don't see anything else but video in my post, then you should learn to read... Or look... Or be more noticeable... Not sure which thing do you need more. Either way - you shouldn't give false arguments.
And again - if you see a difference, go read it somewhere else... Oh, wait. You could possibly stumble upon some other site, which provides the information taken from the original site! Oh no! Hey, let me give you an advice: block all news sites, don't read newspaper, hell, don't use the internet. Most stuff around the internet is provided by third-parties who already re-post it. Then that gets re-posted again and again. In other gaming sites (or not only gaming sites) and so is in my blog. Every site (well, most of them, including mine) add some information written by themselves, a comment or something similar.
As for my posts being linked to YouTube videos I re-uploaded - are you referring to game trailers and this Diablo 3 interview? Hm... Yea, that must make the most of my blog, maybe even a whole 3% of the posts. When I think about it - it reminds me of other gaming sites... Last time I checked, they post these things too, since the only original site would be the game's site. Oh right... Sorry I forgot that you hate sites which provide you with information. Or you only hate my blog for some other reason? Same goes for quoted content/links to original site. And don't skip what I wrote here this time - about the other sites. If you don't ran out of words for this one - say so. Saying so is better than just skipping it like you did last time, it would show that you aren't ignorant, which would be a good thing.
As to the other half of your post - I have no problem with people expressing opinions. But only if there aren't any false arguments in their opinion. However your opinion contained many of them, as you noticed I mentioned earlier.
As you can see, nofing and Rand actually were polite and nicely explained me what is their problem, even gave me some advices about how to solve it. And don't start giving advices or doing something similar, as it seems like you skipped more than half of my post because you didn't have any arguments to give anymore and you're going to 'the good side' by getting defensive yourself.

Personally... I think we should allow linking to Steam key selling and trading sites, as well as a way to get free Steam keys for games like Eets or DiRT 3... We shouldn't allow those exploited keys to be posted as giveaways, but we should at least allow users who WANT to take advantage of exploits to do so, other people are going to do it anyhow... why not us?
Linking to personal/promotion sites should be fine, as long as there is a reason to do so, and not just "hey check out my cool new blog, it has nothing to do with gaming!" - cause that gets obnoxious.

A "Proof" Area to show that you DO have the gift.
If it's a key... capture an image of receipt and black-out the key area?
Comment has been collapsed.
those are less annoying. I think it's the people who are making bank off of posting the referral code that gets me. It would be less annoying with no referral code included, but I still don't really need to be notified every time any random site has a sale. I have google. And friends.

No more crappy blogs. No more trades but offers are ok imo
I dont want sub forums
Comment has been collapsed.
Hopefully categories would force cg to give mods more power, ergo hopefully no more idiots too.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'd say keep it strictly to steamgifts.com related things as most of us already visit a number of big forums and blogs, and this forum just isn't made for large discussions etc. If there was a better way of keeping track of your posts then maybe, but as it is right now, I don't think it should be used for anything else.
Comment has been collapsed.
Improvements would be nice. Like 'show all posts by this user', 'subscribed' or 'view your posts' options, and a PM system would be nice.
The forums are a bit messy with how people can comment on things on the first page in reply, instead of posting at the end of the thread with a quote option. That way is more easy to follow.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm a go for this idea and a No.
Here are my fail reasons why...
If we do move onto sub-forums we might experience some instability in maintaining the amount of content(gaming/news/etc/) all in this one site. With over 14,000 members already registered it will be pretty darn hard for the Mods/admins to actually maintain the situation of balance and order within this realm. Furthermore by linking other blogs/cd-keys/etc. we'll stray too far into what SteamGifts is all about(kind of like a theme if you will).
Also(counter argument) I think it could actually be beneficial to this site to actually include other sub-forums; through this way we can establish a variety of topics members here could choose from whether it be in gaming/world news/ PC hard-ware/ or DOTA 2 XD having a multitude of topics to choose from will help stop the boring/dull/ same o'l stuff that SteamGifts is for. However there is already another site that creates this kind of sub-forums it's called http://www.steamgamesales.com/discussions.php?cat=8 , unfortunately however people have over-taken the discussions thread into /SteamGifts BEGGARS/ People want to trade for games.../ and the other small community that tries to stop it >_>...
and that's my opinion T_T...

I see no reason that outside links should be disallowed from the forums, if they're not advertising something or referral links. Sites that sell steam keys should definitely be disallowed, they're nothing but scams.
Although, it would be nice to at least create some subforums: "Steamgifts" and "General Discussion," for instance.
That way, off-topic discussion or off-site links could be in general discussion, anything steamgifts related could remain here. Not entirely sure if the forum software you're using is able to do that, however.
@GamerFail: The problem in #1 is easily countered with one or two more mods. The forum doesn't seem active to the point that two or three mods would be overwhelmed. Most forums don't usually require a great deal of moderation, in my experience. Usually just one or two problem users with an occasional ad bot.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I was the one to argue about your link to your DJ page (eviscerate, lol, didn't even know this word), for a very simple reason. If a mod does that, then many more will follow. If the forum went full of topics linking to others people's pages the SG related/important topics would get burried... As many others said, there are no categories and the forum gets messy easily. I hope you didn't hate me for that ;)
Untill categories are made and more mods are entitled, I prefer to see only SG related topics. That is topics that have to do with Steam (games, news etc) and Gifts. Simple as that :)

Too many conflicting views to keep everyone happy;
I'm about to add one more to the list... I don't mind people speaking other languages. I would much rather not be able to read it because it is in another language than struggle to read it because it is a piss poor attempt at English. Maybe give them a subforum though. Yeah, a lot of people saying subforums. Do it.
Comment has been collapsed.
I have no problem with people making threads about random crap, as long as it doesn't over take the forum, I think two forum categories are probably a good idea to help sort all the stuff.

I've had many people complain of people linking to other sites that sell Steam keys, or linking to blogs. I myself linked to my DJ page once, and was publicly eviscerated for it, so I'm just trying to see what everyone wants on the forum. Trades? Offers? Keep it to strictly gaming topics?
