I was just scammed out of a HB TellTale key.
But some kind individual mentioned that they can be retrieved.
Quote: "no problem,it will be removed from account that was used"
"just tell them that key is dupe and they will send you new :)"

Is this true? I assume I could get myself a new key, but will they take it away from the original person who used it as well? I do not want to scam HB or Steam into giving out an extra copy of their game.

Note the trade was TellTale Pack for a Poker at the Inv.

The TellTale pack that I HAD, included Poker at the Inv. I was trying to do a good deed.

The people at humble bundle are really nice so they probably will give you a key, but I don't think you should lie to them.

I was not planning to. I thought I made it clear that I was not going to do anything if it was going to be even slightly underhanded. I am not even sure if it is not allowed to trade give away keys (it is done all the time here).
But specifically I was going to say: "This key says that is is a duplicate when I use it, could you possibly send me another"

Just tell them the and what happened. They'll be under the impression that you tried activating it yourself.
And you're right trading keys is not accepted in their ToS.

Humble Bundle did nothing wrong on their part, you did. Either tell them the truth, or buy new keys. It's not even that pricey by any means.

that sucks, maybe they're just busy and it'll take 4 or 5?(weekends don't usually count) (also theres been some kind of trouble with the steam versions from weekly crashing for some people/ they're probably complaining at humble instead of steam so they have to waste time redirecting everybody.)

edit-you should try steam, maybe they'll at least take it from the scammer, and you can prove you own the key..actually I think they do that sort of thing alot. ...steam was probably the way to go in hindsight anyway. don't know why I didn't think of saying so at the time.

I don't understand, and I'm not trying to judge you, but why were you trying to trade your telltale key for a single Poker Night? Actually, if you already have the game, it gives you another giftable copy of Poker Night.

Nope, no one should get an extra copy from this bundle.

I pre ordered Poker Night 2, got a Poker Night as a gift back then. Now I bought this bundle (only 4 hours ago though) and I didnt get an extra copy.

"All keys are for your personal use only."

That said, you should not trade them, we shouldn't even be giving them on steamgifts, but... If that key was used, that's too bad, they won't give you another. Yes, they can claim HB keys, for the webpage, not steam keys.

But like a few other people have pointed out, the Law invalidates that rule.
It is a Steam key, and the law of most countries on Earth would allow me to sell or trade it to whoever I want.

Comment has been collapsed.

That doesn't really matter. It's their ToS, and if you ask them for a new key and they say no because you weren't supposed to trade it anyway, they're not going to change their mind if you quote that lie. You could take them to court over it, but that's just idiotic, especially since there's a good chance the Humble Bundle people will win.

"You could take them to court over it, but that's just idiotic, especially since there's a good chance the Humble Bundle people will win."

THIS

That's exactly why you can't follow the so called "International laws" (i hate that everybody can be a fucking lawyer in the internet this days..)

You have to follow the ToS, EULA, whatever it is, or you're fucked. Get real.

while law>tos is true it just means that they can't sue you. A company can always stop offering their service to you, they don't have to sell their stuff to you.

Obviously they do not have to give me a replacement key, but at the same time they cannot prosecute me for trading a Steam key. I think it would be completely legal to refuse business to anyone they wanted on any or no grounds. They could even disable my account, but at that point I probably could sue them and have a decent chance of winning.

So I might take a hit from going to them, but that will be on them. I will have the law and morals on my side, and they will have is an illegal TOS.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's not the point. Nothing is going to happen to you, they don't care if you traded or lost the steam key or not. It has been used, that's what matters. How it became used, its up to you, and that's the point. You'll never lose your HB account for this, but you'll also never get another steam key if it has been used.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well if you want to talk about it like that then the whole steam thing in general is illegal, "rule of first sale"

(even if its true that doesn't mean if you contact steam say "remove skyrim from my library and give me a fresh key I want to sell it used eventhough its against your tos because I'm quoting some international law I read on the internet" they'd actually give you one.)

lol, I did already know that.
Thats exactly why I mentioned it. how would i get it so on the nose by random chance :/

the point was that even if its true it doesn't really matter, you'd have to sue them to make it happen and that hasn't been working out so well so far. (in the past when this came up I've posted links about how germany(possibly other europe too don't remember) was involved in suing valve and we still can't resell steam games. but I don't have the link on me)

going to them, asking to get a key you lost replaced and getting a reply of "tough titties, we told you not to do that anyway its against our tos." is not likely to be the one of these cases that goes well.

Permalink

I think if someone showed the ability to sue and brought up the case linked HIB would try to come to an agreement before anyone actually tries to sue them.

err...i suppose, but you may have skimmed too much of this thread....

don't you think thats a stupid ridiculously aggressive way to deal with something like this?

Humble was in no way at fault for this...at all. They did nothing to harm him, aren't obligated to replace the key ect.

I can't see threatening them helping.

You'd be walking up to them and saying "settle out of court or I'll make myself look like an idiot blow alot of money on lawyers and get the case thrown out of court before I even get to use one of them"

What would op threaten to sue for? "I did exactly what you asked(suggested, whatever) me not to and as a result got robbed by a random 3rd party and you didn't replace what I lost, I sue for damages caused by you not trying harder"?

Sorry, that wasn't meant as a solution to his problem. I meant if they pulled the TOS card on steamgifts, trading, etc.

Also, I believe this is what you were referring to. Steam market beta is definitely valve's way of solving this problem. They technically let you resell games but they still get their share. Who doesn't love loopholes?

For people arguing about the extra giftable copies, I can confirm its true. Under very specific conditions, you can get extra copies with keys. Already happened with the games on the Potato bundle in combination with one of the Humble Bundles. In this case, if you got your Poker Night at Inventory copy through the preorder of Poker Night 2, you will receive a extra copy when you use the key of this bundle.

That's very odd, why would it only be for that?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My guesses are that its kinda of a bug in the way the game is "given" to you. This happens in cases where you got the game in a steam bundle or prepurchase where the game is said to give you gift copies of the ones you already got(well, in this case, works for the games you didnt got) Humble bundle keys, in this case, because they have everything in one key, will "force" itself to register on your Steam as a retail copy, triggering the needed conditions to get the gift copy.

I hope I explained it well, it is a odd bug and only happens quite rarely because of the conditions needed.
