Is there a reason to wait a week or two to giveaway a game? I see several games listed with end dates in the weeks. Is there a reason for this? Outside of trying to get as many people to enter and advertising something personal. I just don't see why you would wait that long. Even getting the most to enter seems pointless for 3 weeks when I assume most don't enter till the last day (unless on a wishlist thing).

I see now and then people that enter will comment, "good luck to you". I always assume that is a translation issue and they mean to say something like, "good luck everyone".

It's just a curiosity for me. Since I do toss up unwanted games now and then.

i Dont get it either only reason i would see for such a long giveaway if a group has some rule on how long giveaways should be but other wise no clue i think like 1 or 2 days max at most but thats just me i mean dont you want that value to your level sooner lol

to give more people a chance to enter. not everyone is on here 24/7, so it's nice when a giveaway is open for longer

If a giveaway lasts longer, more people [and bots] can enter. The more people [and bots] enter, the lower each person's chance becomes. Therefore people create giveaways that last as long as possible to decrease each participant's chance to win. Fun!
I mean, yeah, I also don't get why anyone would make a giveaway that lasts for more than several days, that's more than enough for anyone willing to enter.

Actually, I think, that most bots would anyway enter in one day, if not just in a few hours. Quite opposite, real people not always have the time to carefully check the GAs, and even if they are logging for a short time to spend their points, if they are in hurry, they are likely to check just recommended page. So, I think, that a few day long GA, including a weekend, will have a much higher ratio of real people to bots, than a few hour GA.

Also, take into the account, that points are based purely on time, and the same amount of points is generated (and presumably spent) no matter, how long the GAs are. So if the chances to win in longer GAs are lower, then thanks to them the chances to win in some other GAs are higher ;)

Make 30-day giveaways, delete them right at the last minute, then create a new 30-day giveaway for the same game. Repeat for a year!

but it wont carry entries, people will have to enter again. And imagine that, you enter GA, forget about it and after a year you win... what a nice surprise!

A puzzle which requires brute forcing a cryptographic private key somewhere in the range of 24 to 34 bits depending on if you want them to do 1 key per second vs 1 key per millisecond (trying all combinations in both cases would take a bit under 200 days assuming all of them need to be tried).

Because I can? I just choose my times randomly now but I'll probably start using a D31 for times now along with my D13 for level/group

Well good response. Since there seems to be no account benefit, like more entries more point you get or something like that. I will do my giveaways in 2 ways. Giveaways that have a higher value to affect my score. I will do in like an hour so I can boost my score faster. Games that have lower value (or none). I will make like a few days or so. Just to advert my trade thread.

Like right now. I just put up 8 giveaways. Some short and some long. :D

Thanks for the replies everyone. :D

You really are in a rush, eh?
Even only giving a forumthread one hour time to respond to get conclussions 0_o.

Anyway I generally never do less than 24h giveaways due to timezones. Atleast this way everyone everywhere got a chance to enter.

Yeah, time zones are pain in the... you know.
Always the best giveaways starts at ~2+AM (my time) and the very next day they are gone :(

Not sure what you mean about the forum thread? I am not rushing anyone with the thread. The thread is not over yet. I was not using it to way in on the amount of time I was going to use for my giveaways. Just a curiosity I thought I would ask of any who wanted to way in on the subject.

I like to do short giveaways. It's nice for those who happen to be on and want to actually win something. Gives some members a little more hope that they can get a free game. If I had to enter with every member for a chance at something. I probably would not enter any out of sear hopelessness.

I have not been a member as long as most but I have only one once out of hundreds and hundreds. Every time I enter I get the feeling like, ya not going to win. Still I enter cause, why not. Cost me nothing. Then again I don't enter for everything. So I do limit my chances of winning something when I choose not to enter everything. I tend to only enter for games that I want to try. Still, doing nice short giveaways helps to brighten someone day a little bit more.

Well, first of all, you easily qualify to join Unlucky7 group, which has quite a few good GAs with very low odds (usually less than 100 participants, I think). I see, that you are already in Playing Appreciated, but possibly you should also join Playing Matters a bit later. Unlucky7 puts no restrains on you, and PM is similar to PA, so read the rules and decide. Good luck at SG :)

This thread.
As you can see the very first hour garnered 6 responses (+some comments on them), then afterwards it generated 12 responses. So you can see how for example 1h vs. more hours works on human entries also in a giveaway, which would mirror human interaction on a forum...

From my own experience, the length of a giveaway does have some impact on who all enters said giveaway.

  • Giveaways tend to garner more bot entrants than human entrants when the entry period is twenty-four hours or less. (Likewise if the game being given away is considered undesirable.)
  • Giveaways tend to garner more human entrants when the entry period is five or more days.
  • Giveaways garner fewer and fewer entrants over time with a noticeable drop after ten days.
  • Giveaways for expensive games (which require many points for entry) have a unique pattern of entries that seems to be almost a "bell curve."
  • Giveaways for groups tend to last longer so as to maximize the opportunity to enter.

Actually I think it is great.
Great way to save unused points as later we can remove entry so we can join quickies when we are broke :P

I make all my giveaways at least 24 hours long, to give different time zones a chance to enter. I make most of them last 2-3 days, to give everyone a chance to enter because we're busy people and sometimes people can't check SG every day.

As far as why someone would make a giveaway last weeks - maybe they're making it convenient for themselves? Maybe they're busy during the week and want to save it for the weekend when they're free, or they're going away and want to be able to handle giveaways when they come back? Those are my guesses.

I really appreciate making them go out as far out as possible to allow more people to solve the puzzles that go with them. So really only if you want puzzles created for an event I would think.

Wishing everybody luck is the same as wishing nobody luck, they wish it to those who took the time to write comments. And people maximize giveaway duration to maximize participants.

What is a week? Actually nothing... Some people are on vacation, in hospital, working overtime, are way to busy to enter or even sick in bed...
This way people get a chance to actually win the game.

The only annoying thing is: you have to resent the key. This should really be automated -.-

I originally did my giveaways for a week for two reasons
1) It gives a chance for the actual people to enter, rather than just bots
2) I work and have children so a week is excellent in that I can send the key at a time when i am not being badger/assisted by evil midgets

I think 2-7 days is the sweet spot. Many people will miss wanted giveaways unless they're at least 2 days long. Think about it like this: you want good games but they're only on one hour long giveaways which you aren't looking at the site 24/7, frustrating right? "Who made those good game giveaways only last one hour long?!!?!" The creator did.

Another situation is that SG gives 6 points per 15 minutes for users to join giveaways. If there is a desirable game with high point cost during a sale, more giveaways will be made and one may not have the points to enter all of them if they all last only 24 hours. If the wanted giveaways all lasted 24 hours, one would have double the points to join all those wanted giveaways. This point is debatable, most creators don't care but I do believe it would be better to give everyone the most chances they can get to enter a game they really want and if all it takes is making a giveaway last two days instead of one, it's worth the wait to make more people happy for even the chance to enter.

When I was in a hurry, my junk giveaways lasted 1 day and good games lasted 3. Nowadays I'm more lax and use 2-7 days, 2-3 for junk/currently bundled, 3-7 for good or unbundled games, there's no hurry.

Of course, the "hurry" to level up goes away after the first few levels since even if your giveaways end quickly, it contributes little towards % for next level and you won't have any more games lined up anyways.

The unofficial estimate is first win at around 1k entries which you've won once already, congrats.

Usually I see that giveaways lasting over one week are promoting groups or games or curators or for events whether personal or actual holiday-related.

I once had some leftover keys and went on a vacation the day after. So I guess it does make sense somehow.

However, I do like almost all of my GAs for 1-2 days max.

For me, it all depends on what I have going on currently, and possibly in the future. Sometimes I've put things up for an hour or two because I know I won't be around much after the fact and/or sometimes I like when there are better odds and less tickets.

Other times it may run for a few days to maximize exposure. If I'm doing a puzzle, generally I'll give it a week because some puzzles are rather obtuse and obscure that may also reference specific North American things.

There's really no right or wrong answer for this. You can give a GOOD reason to have a longer giveaway and somebody will tell you why you shouldn't and also vice versa. I don't think it's going to come to some sort of shortage of games where people are going to scramble at a chance to enter a short giveaway in a certain time frame. As long as there are bundle sites and deals and websites like isthereanydeal, there will be a lot of other opportunities to potentially win if the giveaway you're looking at is only for an hour (or three).

Anticipation maybe, though I don't think very many feel that with giveaways after the first week or so. I certainly don't. I stopped anticipating any game I enter for do to the fact that I will probably not win them. So far, that has held true. After 917 bids (as of this post) with only 1 win. You start to forget about what you bid on.
