Minutes ago I bought Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor - Season Pass with Country Restriction. "This is a restricted gift which can only be redeemed in these countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Republic of, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Russian Federation", yes it is a RUSSIAN VPN. Is there any chance to bypass that on steam and activate it somehow, or like a solution where I can trade it off in worth for a European version? Thanks a lot

why did you bought region locked?

Because he bought it via trading TF2 Keys probably.

The gift still says it's region locked though (unless there was some bug included where it didn't this time).

I'd rather ask, why can you even accept region-locked games that do not match your region?
Steam should automatically prevent this from happening to you.

Steam never prevented trading region locked gifts. It only prevents using it, but not trading it.

If you'd want to buy something for your russian friend maybe:P?

There is no way to activate it outside of the listed countries unless you use a proxy or a VPN. Trading it for a European version of the game will be difficult, since the European version costs much more.

if you collect enough balalaikas and dashcams in your room you may fool Steam into thinking you are Russian and thus allowing you to activate it.

And then getting bananed by volvo for breaking SSA, part about regional restrictions, rite. Jk, you won't get their attention unless you do it in large quantities and someone reports you at the same time.

There is a way to activate but it against the rules and definitely not a subject to talk about here, doing it though may result in blocking your steam accout, better give it away to someone from ru/cis or trade it away for something else, also, you shouldn`t be buing region locked games

I was asking if there is a legal way, I am not up for cheating.. Not on this steam account. :)

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, there is a legal way. Buy a ticket to Russia, travel there, log into steam there and activate all those gifts. Just don't forget to save the tickets in case if steam "support" will ask you if you used proxies.

Thats a legal way concerning law but still against steam rules. You arent allowed to travel and redeem it there. U are only allowed to activate games where you live

Can you quote any kind of steam rules regarding this? Whole point of steam is to get quick access to your games wherever you are. As long as you will be able to proof you were travelling and not using proxies (which is forbidden by SSA), you'll be fine.

This is one of the cases when Steam Support actually trade ban ppl who trade region locked copies to ppl from other countries, if the person who received it didn't know it had region lock, and reverts the trade, because this is called scam.

They can check chat history, trade history, so nothing stupid.

Steam does not save any chat logs. And in trade history it's unclear whether you willingly bought region locked version or it you weren't aware it was region locked. OP pretty much dodged a bullet when got his refund.

That's a bullshit. Steam "Support" won't do jackshit in this situation. Here's an automated reply you get on submitting any "support" ticket in "report scams" section:

If you have been scammed, Steam Support will not restore any items/gifts that have been traded. It is your responsibility to ensure you are receiving the correct items/gifts at the time of accepting the trade.

Well I knew a guy from Russia who traded a region locked game to some some Chinese girl, she wrote a ticket to Steam Support and he got a trade ban, and trade was reverted.

I think Steam won't ban you for activating region-locked games, but there is a high chance they will IF you use your account to buy games outside your country.

Steam never ban people for activating region locked via VPN. I know my friends did that with BL2 RU copies when it was hot.

Their Steam accounts are still fine up to this day.

Interesting to make this statement including the words " they never" solely based on a mere handful of cases.
The general consensus rather seems to be that they people sometimes do get banned for doing it.

i never heard of anyone that got banned for it and i registered lots (LOTS) of games using a vpn on customer clients when i sold gus/ru keys

Read SSA, it's forbidden. If steam "support" is too lazy to check this, doesn't mean they won't ban the guy who did this many times if someone reports him for this.

What? I know SSA already no need to tell me. I know it's forbidden. I am saying my friends DID NOT GET BANNED FOR ACTIVATING RU GIFTS THRU VPN.

Report them next time they'll do this and see some new bans appearing.

nothing will happen, but you should own already a vpn to activate it or at least know where to get one BEFORE you buy a region locked key/gift :D
