Both my white and black list have gone a bit too crowdy and I've been thinking to reorganise them a little. However, I can't remember literally any reasons of why I put the users there, I just assume that they're there for a good reason (which is usually the truth).

What would be helpful a lot is an additional field, a short comment (let's say VARCHAR(256)), where one could input a reason, justification or just a note about the person.

I THINK it wouldn't require that much programming work (slight change to the black/white list model and view, if SG is MVC based, a tiny additional form to be shown on click on the white/blacklist icon on one's profile and a slight touch in the DB), but obviously I don't know the architecture of the site, so can't really judge too accurately.

Would you use that feature?

You can do that with the SteamGifts++ script
This is how it looks like

Well yeah, ok, but 2 issues:

  • That's a client side script, so I assume the info is saved somewhere locally, so you won't see that on other machines/browsers (unless someone behind SG++ actually runs a server and stores/reads that information there, but even then you'll have to install SG++ on every machine you use if you want to access that at will)
  • I've used the first SG+ script, long time ago and at some point it all went to you-know-where, because the updates stopped at some point (and the script wasn't too stable as well).

Permanent solution would be more desirable I think, especially for script/add-on purists like myself.

Yeah, I changed browser recently and had to rewrite all my tags.
I know it would be better to have that feature without using a 3rd party script, I just wanted to point out that it is already possible to do if you really need the feature immediately.
Personally I'm not experiencing issues with the script

Ok, thanks for the info then :P
Well it was the older version of the script, I think it's gone from the forum after we've moved to SGv2.

I always miss that feature in a lot of games. Some players piss me off and after couple of days I can't even remember why I put someone there and if they actually deserved to be put there...

Going with that flow of thoughts, we could just strip most of the features from SG, because why would anyone implement anything that can be done manually.

Thing is, you can create at notepad file and you might even carry it everywhere you go with you or download it and go through it every time you want to check something there, but it would just be annoying to use. Multiply it by all the people who would do that vs the time spent adding that feature and you have a big opportunity to improve time management - in business world of course. But still I think we could apply process improvement rules here to some extent as SG also earns money for the number of people who use the portal every day (at least I think so - advertisements). The relation is fairly simple. Happy customers -> more word spread about the portal -> more customers -> more income.

Then again, just to seal this up, this is the bugs/suggestion section of the forum, if cg didn't want to read any of those, he would simply delete this section and continue running the site without any improvements. But as we got SGv2 and we do have this section, it obviously shows that he cares about the portal enough to make it better, when he can. That said, I can't and I'm not going to force him or any of the support team to go through my suggestions and state a response, but if they feel like it, I would be just happy that I could help improving the portal.

And remember, being able to do something in an old-fashioned, imperfect way can never be a reason to stop improving it. Let's think progressively.

Of course it makes the site better, it makes using one of the recently implemented features even more convenient for the users. If that's not making the site better, then I don't know what is.
And really, you've never seen notes feature anywhere on the internet? Well, how about Steam, where you can add notes in your friends list? It's a pretty basic functionality and as I said, usually not too time exhausting to code and implement.

I don't see how blacklists/whitelists harm the site in any way. They can't be really used in a wrong way, because everyone should use them as they wish, that's the beauty of this feature.

About ignoring users feature - if someone is being toxic, the best way to solve that is just don't read/care or in extreme cases report his behaviour. Those are basic procedures for most of the communities.

yeah, it would be nice to have it on site instead of depending on a script.

I agree, i would be a nice improvement to the site.

Also, do you think the reason/note should be made visible for the blacklisted person?

To be honest, I think there would be no such need, the feature would be used purely for the convenient of the list owners. It's like now, you can't even check if you're on somebody's white/black list unless you try to enter one's giveaway. I'm just more in favor of keeping the transparency of the feature from the point of view of the person on the black/white list.
